4 A NOTE FROM YOUR PASTOR As I mentioned in a sermon a few weeks ago, we will shortly be entering the second year of Bishop Ricken s, Disciples on the Way. These first two years are focused on helping us pray more effectively and communicate better with God, so that our friendship with him can be as strong and enriching as possible. This is the core of our religion and every other human need is addressed through it. I m a lover of books. It s hard to express how enriched my life has been by reading just a few good books on prayer. I have a long way to go, but without the insights of these special saints and other author s, my friendship would be far short of where it is. Fortunately, Bishop Ricken has provided us with a suggested reading list. Here are a few of books on the list: Living Prayer by Bishop Robert Morneau, Celebrating Mass: A Guide for Understanding and Appreciating the Mass More Deeply & How to Pray like Jesus and the Saints: A Study Guide for Catholics both by Fr. Alfred McBride, Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence, Wrap yourself in Scripture: Praying and Reflecting on Scripture with Journaling by Karen and Laurence Dwyer, Conversing with God in Scripture: A Contemporary Approach to Lectio Divina by Stephen Binz, Meeting Jesus Christ- Meditations on the Word by J. Brian Bransfeld, The Holy Way: Practices for a Holy Life by Paula Huston, and Prayers for Beginners by Peter Kreeft to name a few. I am currently reading Living Prayer by Bishop Morneau. I m not finished but I highly recommend it. You can receive your copy at Cathedral Book and Gift. They are selling well and I can see why. It is a great choice, however take a look at Bishop s entire list at the Diocesan website, I m confident you will find something helpful for yourself or a friend. Having good relationships, especially with God, is the key to happiness and prayer, conversations with Christ, is the path to tapping the potential of this friendship. God bless you! Fr. Joe FIDEI DEFENSOR Fidei Defensor is a parish, lay apostolate, dedicated to evangelization, apologetics and teaching people how to explain the Catholic Faith with clarity, kindness and gentleness. Anyone may join; no previous experience needed. The only things you need are a love for Jesus Christ and His Church as well as a desire to increase your knowledge. Sessions will be held every fourth Saturday morning from 8-9:30 am in the Gehl Center located behind St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. The next session will be held on Saturday, September 26th. For information call Nate Stevens at ANNUAL RED MASS!! The annual Red Mass for the Green Bay Diocese will be celebrated Thursday, October 15th, at 5 pm at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay. The celebrant will be Bishop David Ricken. During this Mass, all members of the legal community and those who hold public office, including judges, government officials, attorneys, legal staff, paralegals and law school faculty, are reminded of the importance of their vocations and ask for God s guidance in administering their office or position with wisdom, justice, fortitude, compassion and counsel. All members of the public, Catholic and non-catholic, are invited to this Mass to join in this prayer. 131 S. Stop in to welcome Cecilia, our newest employee! She will be at the store Tuesday and Friday, from 11am - 3pm to assist our Hispanic customers. We truly appreciate your patronage and your friendship! BISHOP RICKEN S MONTHLY PRAYER INTENTION That students in our schools and faith formation programs prepare to respond to their call to bring the love of Christ to others, guided by educators who joyfully proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel. POPE FRANCIS MONTHLY PRAYER INTENTIONS Universal: That opportunities for education and employment may increase for all young people. Evangelization: That catechists may give witness by living in a way consistent with the faith they proclaim.
5 MUSIC MINISTRY As Summer wanes, our thoughts start to turn to the Fall season and the beginning of a new Cathedral Choir season. We are always looking for new singers. Currently we have three different choirs: Cathedral Choir, Schola Cantorum and Children s Schola. Cantors are also needed. If God is calling you to serve Him in this beautiful ministry of leading others in prayer, contact Jody Strnad at or msmusic65@gmail.com. CATHEDRAL PRAYER NETWORK If you have any special prayer requests that you would like the members of the Prayer Network Ministry to pray for, please call Kathy at Requests can also be submitted on the parish website: If you are interested in becoming a member of this ministry, call Kathy. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE 40 Days for Life starts September 23rd. Cathedral's time slot is on Fridays 4 pm - 6 p.m. We always need people to help walk, pray and fast for these 40 Days. YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE When you go to church it may be hard to see beyond what the priests, deacons, lectors, cantors, and others are doing at the moment (unless of course you re one of those people!). Behind that hour of Mass, however, are many hours of meetings, practice, and personal preparation that go into leading worship. But the work everyone else in a faith community does including yours is just as important. Supporting yourself, and maybe a family, as well as all the other tasks of life, if you do them in a spirit of faith and generosity, go just as far in building the kingdom of God. And perhaps the most important thing you do is worship itself. The very origin of the word liturgy is the "public work and service" of the church. Take Five for Faith THAT MAN IS YOU Men mark your calendars. That Man is You, begins September 16 th at 6 am at the Cathedral in the BWC Center. This program is modeled after some of the country s leading men s programs. That Man is You combines Church teaching, scripture, the wisdom of the saints and a little fun to address the pressures and temptations facing men in our modern culture. It seeks to form authentic leaders who will be capable of transforming homes and society. If interested please contact Shawn Zehms (920) or shawn7144@att.net. LITURGICAL ITEMS NEEDED Recently much needed liturgical items were purchased one being a ciborium to be used for holy week and larger Masses. Other items purchased were Aspergils (water sprinklers used for blessings during Mass) totaling $600. If you feel called to help defray the costs contact Sonia in the office at Thank you for your generosity. THANK YOU! To the Members of the Parish, Our family shall long remember the many acts of kindness shown to our mother during the 95 years that she was a member of this parish community. We cannot begin to thank all of the people that touched her life. Thank you for all those that prayed and supported us during this most difficult time. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your concern. The Ellen Karwedsky Family ST. JOHN PAUL II CLASSICAL SCHOOL Are you tired of the same NEW thing? Try something OLD! Opening the fall of 2016, the GRACE system wants you to discover the St. John Paul II Classical School. Faithful, orthodox and based upon the oldest and most proven model of education. For more information visit us online at or call Headmaster, Brad Norton at (920) ext Do not be afraid to become the saints of the new millenium. -St. John Paul II RED CROSS RELIEF RESPONDERS The Red Cross is in need of Disaster Responders. These people typically respond to natural disasters and home fires. The need is greater as the weather grows colder and the incidence of home fires increases. Last year the Red Cross responded to over 50 emergencies in Brown County alone. To learn more, join us for an open house on Tuesday, September 29, from 6pm until 8pm at 121 Bader Street (across the street from the Deckner Ave Red Cross Building). If questions, call MISSIONARY COLLECTION Please welcome our visiting priest, Rev. Albert Adeleke of Ijebu-Ode Diocese, Nigeria. His diocese has 28 parishes with over 150 churches, 7 houses of formation, 12 religious houses for male and female religious groups. The Catholic population does not have enough material and financial resources to help sustain priest and religious, training of seminarians or for primary health care for the villagers. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please be generous!

St. John the Evangelist Parish 413 Saint John Street, Green Bay, WI Liturgical Schedule Tuesday: 8:30 am - Mass Thursday: 8:30 am - Mass Saturday: 5:30 pm - Mass Sunday: 10:45 am - Mass FATIH ALIVE ADULT FAITH FORMATION Are you interested in learning more about your Catholic Faith or want to grow closer to God? The Cathedral and St. John s is now offering an adult faith formation session every third Thursday evening from 6 pm 7:30 pm. The next session will be on Thursday, September 17th in the Social Hall at St. John s. The topic will be Living through Life s Struggles. See you there!! FEATURED LIGHTHOUSE CD The Lamb's Supper Based on his best-selling book, Dr. Scott Hahn reveals the early Christians' key to understanding the Mass: the Book of Revelation. With its bizarre imagery, mystic visions of Heaven, and end-times prophecies, it mirrors the sacrifice and celebration of the Holy Eucharist. See the Mass with new eyes, pray the Liturgy with a renewed heart, and enter into the Mass more fully and enthusiastically! PRAYER CORNER The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; They are new every morning, Great is His faithfulness. This is a perfect verse to cut out and put someplace where you will see it first thing in the morning. What an excellent way to start your day as this message of God s infinite love, mercy, and faithfulness fills us with hope. Each day brings us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in His care as we go about our duties; this should bring us great joy! New every morning! Wonderful are you ways, oh Lord!
