5 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA TURTLE ROCK One of the most fascinating and unusual geological sculptures of nature. It is located on the northern outskirt of Turka village - a few meters away from the shoreline. According to an ancient legend, the Turtle comes alive once in spring during a full moon by the spiritual gift of Baikal and as soon as the first morning star lights up in the sky it turns back into rock.

6 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA CHIVIRKUY GULF The second largest gulf of Lake Baikal - it has numerous bays, the shores of which are covered with taiga. There are also openair hot mineral springs on the west side of the gulf in Zmeinaya Bay. The gulf is known for its unique landscapes and considered to be a fishing paradise.

7 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA BAIKAL IN WINTER Baikal in winter is a place you must visit at least once in your lifetime. It offers unbelievably stunning sceneries of pristine nature and the unique blue ice of Lake Baikal. You will have an opportunity to drive over the frozen surface of the lake on SUVs, hovercrafts, snowmobiles, ski and skate as well as experience ice fishing, picnicking on the ice and trying traditional Buryat dishes.

9 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA THE BARGUZIN VALLEY The Barguzin Valley is stretched over 200 kilometers between Barguzin and Ikat Mountain ranges. It is a supposed burial place of Chinggis Khaan. There are a number of natural and cultural attractions, Buddhist and shamanic shrines such as Ininsky Stone Garden, Bukha-Shuluun, palace of goddess Yanzhima and many more.

10 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA MUNKU-SARDYK The highest point of the Eastern Sayan Mountains, m above sea level. The name of the peak from Buryat language means «eternal bare peak». Each peak of the mountain group is named after the sons of the hero of the Buryat epic «Geser», Abai- Geser-khan, Son of Heaven.

11 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA IVOLGINSKY DATSAN Ivolginsky Datsan (monastery complex) is a centre of Buddhism in Russia and protected by the state as a monument of religious architecture. Each temple is dedicated to different Buddhist deities or section of Buddha s teachings. Guests of the Ivolginsky Datsan have a unique opportunity to see the imperishable body of Pandido Khambo Lama XII Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, as well as visit a Buddhist cleric, astrologer or specialist in Tibetan medicine.

12 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA YANZHIMA GODDESS In May of 2005 on one of the rocky ledges of Barguzin district appeared a miraculous image of a dancing goddess about one meter in height. According to a legend, Yanzhima goddess has the power to grant people the greatest gift of motherhood.

13 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA ODIGITRIEVSKY CATHEDRAL The Orthodox Church, the cathedral of Ulan-Ude and Buryat eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church is the first stone building in the city of Ulan-Ude. The construction of this cathedral started in 1741 and went on for 44 years.

14 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA SCULPTURE OF «HOSPITABLE BURYATIA» The sculpture welcomes visitors of Ulan-Ude from the bank of the river Selenga. The statue depicts a woman in traditional costume holding Buryat Khadak (a ritual long scarf, one of Buddhist symbols), which is symbolizes hospitality, purity, unselfishness, friendship and compassion. The height of the sculpture along with the pedestal is 16 m.

15 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA THE GIANT LENIN HEAD OF ULAN-UDE The biggest Lenin s head sculpture in the world is an iconic sight of Ulan-Ude. It is located in the middle of Soviet Square - the centre of the city. The sculpture is 7.7 meter in height and weighs 42 tons.

16 SIGHTS OF BURYATIA ETHNOCOMPLEX «STEPPE NOMAD» It is located in the Atsagat valley 50 km from Ulan-Ude. Here you can visit local Buddhist temple, meet and talk to one of the temple s lama and visit a museum - former house of Agvan Dorzhiev, where a copy of the Atlas of Tibetan Medicine is kept. Guests will be offered to familiarize themselves with the traditions of the Buryat people, the peculiarities of living in felt yurts, take part in national culinary master classes as well as on how to take care of horses and camels.

21 ETHNOGRAPHIC TOURISM CULTURAL HERITAGE OF SEMEISKIE Semeiskie are a community of Old Believers that were exiled to the east of Lake Baikal by the government of Russian Empire in XVIII century. Picturesque villages of the Old Believers are among the most beautiful villages of Russia and always look festive, which is expressed with bright colors. The tour to the Old Believers village includes visiting a local museum, lunch with traditional dishes and a folk entertainment, which entitles the participation of guests in games and comic rites.

22 ETHNOGRAPHIC TOURISM SHAMANISM Shamanism (communication with spirits) underlies the traditional worldview of the peoples of Siberia and for a long time was the main religion of the Buryat people. Today the shaman is a significant person, carrying out all the rituals connected with birth, death and important events in the life of a person. The shaman invokes patron spirits and he can be called a mediator in the relationship of man and the higher forces. Throughout the region you can commonly see a lot of «sergė» - a ritual tethering for horses of celestials and spirits of the underworld.

Nomadic way of life requires huge energy costs, so the traditional cuisine of Buryatia includes a lot of meat and dairy dishes rich in calories and high in energy.

28 EVENT TOURISM SAGAALGAN Sagaalgan, the «White Month» selebration, starts at the first day of the New Year according to the Mongolian (lunisolar) calendar and lasts for several days. During the selebration, the international youth music contest «White Month» is held as well as numerous concerts, festivals, entertainment events, fashion shows and much more. The selebration ends with a nationwide circle-dance «Yohor- Naadan».

29 EVENT TOURISM INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL «THE VOICE OF NOMADS» It is a grand summer festival of ethnic music in the open air. Since 2009, it combines professional groups that create modern musical art based of folk music. The guests are provided with an entertainment program that includes tasting of national cuisine, master classes and sports games.

30 EVENT TOURISM «THE BAIKAL FISHING» INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL It is the largest international competition in ice fishing, gathering more than 220 teams. It has been held since 2005 annually in the last decade of March. The prize fund amounts to several million rubles. The traditional main prize is a car.

31 EVENT TOURISM FESTIVAL «ON THE SEVEN WINDS OF THE SEASIDE» It is the annual two-day festival in July held in a very authentic fishing village Kurbulik. Guests of the festival will be invited to participate in the tasting of many different fish delicacies at the thematic culinary contest «Fisheries Fantasy».

32 EVENT TOURISM «WINTER FUN IN CHIVIRKUY» This event is annually held in the Chivyrkuy Gulf in early March. It includes ice-fishing competition, triathlon, dog sledge race, contests, games as well as concerts and entertainment events.

33 ECOTOURISM ANIMAL OBSERVATION The Republic of Buryatia is home to many wild animals. Wildlife enthusiasts will have an opportunity to observe local animals in their natural habitat and take pictures of barguzin sable, roe deer, seal, fox, rare species of birds and other representatives of the Baikal fauna. One of the most fascinating spectacles is bears - beautiful, strong and capricious beasts.
