1 lotus Journal of the Birmingham Buddhist Vihara Issue No. 30, Autumn 2009 Mr Sansari Lal Who passed away peacefully on Saturday, 1st August I was greatly saddened when I heard the news that Mr. Sansari Lal had passed away. I first met Mr. Lal about twelve years ago when I first became involved in the building of the Peace Pagoda he was a very kind and knowledgeable man and a great friend and supporter of Dr. Rewatta Dhamma. Mr. Lal was the mainstay in the building of the Peace Pagoda and one of the original trustees of the Birmingham Buddhist Vihara Trust and even when he was taken ill just before the finishing of the building he was still driving Dr. Rewatta Dhamma to meetings etc, nothing was too much trouble for Mr. Lal. Even in his later years with poor health he would still take part in the Peace Pagoda s festivals and whenever possible he would assist in events at the Peace Pagoda. I am sorry to say that there are not enough like Sansari Lal in this world. He was a man who not only cared about the community but worked diligently and with compassion to make a difference in the community for the betterment of all. Mr. Lal will be missed not only by his family and friends but by all of the people who came into contact with him. The Dalai Lama once said that if you are a Buddhist death is just a change of the physical body rather like one swaps old clothes for new when they are worn out. When our physical support is no longer capable of keeping us alive due to internal or external causes the time has come to take up a new one. In these conditions dying does not mean that we cease to exist Let us all hope that we are lucky enough to meet Sansari Lal s rebirth. John Beard Chair BBVT

2 Abhidhamma Class and 10-day Meditation Retreat Experiences At the start of the retreat Dr. Ottaranyana told us, someone had ed him and asked him what he was going to teach on the meditation retreat. Bhante replied, I haven t got any teachings of my own. I ll be giving you Lord Buddha s original teachings, which is exactly what he did. Bhante gave us teachings from Mahāsatipattāna Sutta (from Dīgha Nikāya) on the four foundations of mindfulness, Kāyānupassanā (contemplation on the Body), Vedanānupassanā (Contemplation on the Feelings), Cittānupassanā (Contemplation on the Mind), and Dhammānupassanā (Contemplation on the [Dhammas, which Bhante translates as the true nature]. In my meditation interview Bhante asked me about my sitting meditation. I had to tell him that my mind was wandering a lot. I could only concentrate on my breathing for about 20% of the time, because I couldn t feel the breath much at the tip of my nose. Bhante told me instead to follow the whole stretch of the in-coming breath at its beginning, its middle and its end, and to do the same with the out-going breath and when I meditated that way it really worked for me. This is just what Lord Buddha says in the Section on Kāyānupassanā Aware of the whole breath body I shall breathe in thus he trains himself; Aware of the whole breath body, I shall breathe out thus he trains himself. It was wonderful to be meditating according to Lord Buddha s original teaching and I was able to report back to Bhante at my next meditation interview that I was getting concentration for about 80% of the time, which is amazing by my usual standards! We also practiced Lord Buddha s teachings on the postures; And again Bhikkhus, a Bhikkhu while walking knows, I am walking ; while standing he knows, I am standing; while sitting he knows, I am sitting ; while lying down he knows, I am lying down. Those of us who are Abhidhamma students were able to use in this practice some of what we had learned in Abhidhamma class. For example: contemplating the elements in walking meditation. In Abhidhamma class we learned about the 4 primary elements (the Mahābhūtas) in more detail; (1) Pathavī, the element of extension, with qualities of hardness and softness is the earth element. (2). Āpo the element of cohesion, with the quality of holding things together, giving rise to the idea of a body, is the water element. (3). Tejo the temperature element, both hot and cold, which is the fire element, and (4) Vāyo, the element of motion and support, which is the air element. When I went for my meditation interview, Bhante asked if I had any problem with my walking meditation. When I explained that my mind was wandering, he told me to think not just about lifting, holding and placing the foot, but to incorporate into the practice what I had learned about the elements. For example, when lifting the foot, this is vāyo the element of motion and support; it s also vāyo in the sense that my foot is moving through the air. Then when I am holding my foot up, this involves āpo the element of cohesion, which is holding it all together, then when I place it on the ground there s pathavī, the earth, and there s also tejo, the temperature of the ground which could be cold in the early morning and quite warm in the afternoon. Then of course there s pathavī, in the sense of the hardness or softness of the surface you are placing your foot on, whether it s concrete or grass. Then Bhante encouraged me to leave off my shoes so I could feel these various qualities of the elements for myself. This was very helpful, as it made the walking meditation practice more meaningful to me, and my mind didn t wander so much. Abhidhamma, Lord Buddha s higher teaching, is a deep subject. Many Buddhist s may think, Oh, it s too difficult for me. So how is it that two very new Buddhists are coming faithfully every week to Abhidhamma class and absolutely loving it? One of the reasons is that Bhante uses many amusing illustrations to get the doctrinal points across. For example: we were learning about the hindrances (nīvaranas): (1) sense-desires, (2) ill-will, (3) sloth and torpor, (4) restlessness and brooding, (5) doubts, and (6) ignorance. How do we find this interesting and more importantly understand and remember it? Bhante explained to us that the hindrances are obstacles to our spiritual progress. They get in the way of our doing good deeds. They are like border guards, cutting us off from achieving the jhānas, and barring our way to the Noble States. We laughed and enjoyed the idea of the border guards picking us off as we tried to cross over into Nibbāna. The idea of the hindrances as border guards is unforgettable! Now that Bhante has got a lot more English, he uses many jokes and stories to illustrate the Abhidhamma teachings. So we all enjoy the class and learn the easy way. Every day we had two one-hour dhamma talks on subjects from Mahāsatipattāna Sutta from Bhante, one at 3.00p.m.and one at 8.00.p.m. In his dhamma talk on the four primary elements we heard Lord Buddha s teaching, Just as if Bhikkhus, a skilful butcher or his apprentice, having slaughtered a cow and divided it into portions were sitting at the junction of four highroads, just so, a Bhikkhu examines and reflects closely on this body however it be placed or disposed as composed of (only) the primary

3 elements thus: There exists in this body the earth element, the water element, the fire element and the air element. Bhante explained to us that in this simile, the four highroads indicate the four postures of walking, standing, sitting and lying down. The butcher or his apprentice represents the meditator who sees the body not as a self or containing a self, but just as the four elements and nothing more, just as the slaughtered cow, after having been cut up into pieces by a butcher is no longer perceived as a cow, but merely as lumps of meat. To illustrate this further, Bhante told us about where families keep an animal, for instance a goat, feed it and look after it well, but they are actually preparing it for slaughter. When the animal is sacrificed there is blood all around, and it must be difficult to see their animal that they have cared for, suffering like that. But a few hours later they cook it, and everyone says, Lovely curry! They forget it was their own animal or a bloody sacrifice. Like that we forget that our body is just composed of the four elements, just matter, no self or soul. We also had a dhamma talk from Bhante on the foulness of the body. We read Lord Buddha s teaching about the parts of the body: head hairs, body hairs and so on: (here 31, in other texts 32 including the brain). He told us this practice is very effective for cutting our lust. He said, We go to the beauty parlour; we think our body is very nice, but in reality it s just made up of these 32 parts. Bhante told us that in Burma many people meditate on the 32 parts of the body on Uposatha day. He said we should get a rosary, and, after offering water and light to Lord Buddha, we should recite the parts of the body, in Pāli if possible, or in English if we prefer in front of our shrine. We also had a dhamma talk on the Nine stages of Corpses, where Lord Buddha exhorts the monks to consider a corpse in 9 different stages of corruption, from a dead body just starting to go blue, a skeleton, scattered bones, through the various stages until it is just dust. Bhante told us the story of a Monk whose subject of meditation was bones. One day he was walking alone in a deserted forest, when suddenly a woman came towards him. She made a noise and he looked to see what had caused it. Soon after her husband came along looking for her. He asked the Monk, Did you see a woman just now? The monk replied, I saw a heap of bones, but whether it was a man or a woman, I don t know. Bhante explained that this is how this practice helps us control sensual desire. Bhante told us that there centres in Burma, where monks can practice these charnel ground meditations on corpses, just like in Lord Buddha s time. They follow the Dhutānga (ascetic practices) using just three robes, and eating only once a day. They have to be vegetarians, as the spirits frequenting the charnel grounds, would be upset by flesh eaters. Bhante said that in the West it isn t possible to see something like that, but we can buy plastic bones, or a plastic skeleton like the medical students use, and meditate on it, thinking, My body will also become like this. Life is uncertain, but death is certain. Bhante also gave us Dhamma talks on the other topics from Mahāsatipattāna Sutta; the five aggregates, the six sense bases, the seven enlightenment factors, and the four noble truths, always illustrating them with amusing examples and interesting stories, making it interesting enjoyable and memorable. At the end of the retreat, Bhante told us, Now for the last 10 days you have kept nine precepts, the Uposatha sīla plus loving-kindness. And because you have been practicing Vipassanā meditation your morality is very pure. You didn t even think a harmful thought, never mind harming beings, and the same with the other precepts. Then he continued, You have put Lord Buddha s teachings into practice. You are real Buddhists now; Upāsakas, Upāsikās, close to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha. It meant so much to us to hear that from Bhante, especially for the new Buddhists, who were very happy and visibly moved. We had a wonderful and hopefully life changing experience. Sorry for all of you that missed it! 4 Happy Days Since the Thursday meditation class was started many years ago, I have seen so many people with all kinds of problems in their lives, benefiting from the practice of meditation and following the teachings of the Buddha, that I feel privileged to have been a part of it. I have learned a lot from the people I was supposed to teach. One thing I have learned is that one must be very careful in choosing one s words and the way one phrases things as it is very easy to upset or mislead and perhaps to turn people from meditation and Buddhism for life. Many are the times I have sat in front of a room full of people and thought that I had no real right or qualification to be doing this, its a case of the blind leading the blind, but people have been very kind and have overlooked my mistakes and inconsistencies. I must confess that I look forward to Thursdays; there is such a nice atmosphere there. We have true friendship and a real desire to help others and we don t draw the line at having a good laugh occasionally. Newcomers are welcomed in and put at their ease by Gordon, whose instructions in meditation are of great value. We take the meditation seriously and I am often surprised at the number of newcomers who pick it up quickly and soon start to practice on a regular basis. Thursday evenings are a great pleasure for me and for others as is evidenced by them continuing to come back for more. We must also not forget the part that is played by the monks in this Thursday class. Dr Ottaranyana has supported us continually and Bhikkhu Nagasena has volunteered to step into the breach when Gordon and I have been unable to attend, and the other monks will always have a cheery word for our people. Now that I am getting older, with aches, pains and various ailments to remind me of it, I must start to think of someone taking over my job. It would be nice to thinks that Thursday evenings will be maintained as a lay evening and a place where everyone, without exception, is made welcome. Introducing people to meditation and the Buddha s Dhamma is tremendously rewarding and I would recommend it to anyone who would like to do it but don t all rush I m not dead yet! Bill Strongman Knowledge & Wisdom In the north of China there once lived a celebrated Confucian scholar. He was very old and had no equal in his knowledge and understanding of the teachings of his great master, Kung Fu Tzu. Then stories started to be heard in the town that in the barbarian south a new doctrine had taken hold that was even deeper than his. The old scholar was annoyed to think that anyone would believe that there could be teachings greater than those of Master Kung but he felt the matter needed to be settled properly. As there was nobody with as great an understanding as he had he decided to make the journey to the south

5 himself. After several months on the road he arrived at a small house where a humble Zen monk lived. He introduced himself and explained that he had come to determine whose teachings were the most profound. He suggested that they should each explain in turn their teachings and understanding of them so that they could decide between themselves who s were the more profound. The monk agreed and suggested that his guest should go first. The Confucian scholar first spent several hours outlining the teachings of Master Kung and then proceeded to explain the various points that he had covered. The monk sat and listened carefully without interrupting once. At last the old scholar finished and asked the monk would he like to make a start on expounding the teachings of his master. The monk smiled and said To avoid doing evil, to do as much good as possible is the teaching of all Buddhas. The scholar sat still for a moment but then jumped up and shouted at the monk I have travelled for many months and put up with much hardship despite my great years. As promised I have fully explained the teachings of Master Kung and then elucidated all the major points. In return for all my efforts you tell me a simple verse that every little child knows, do you think I am some kind of a fool! I am not trying to make fun of you, said the monk, but consider this, every child may know the verse but even an elderly scholar fails to live up to it. It is not what we know but what we do with it that is a true sign of wisdom.
