1 RELS 2012 / CHIN 2060 Chinese and Japanese Religions Fall 2014 Dalhousie University Department of Classics Religious Studies LSC-Common Area C338 Tues. / Thurs Dr. Christopher Austin Marion McCain Arts & SS Bldg. Room 2185 Office Hours: Mon or by appointment christopher.austin@dal.ca Aim of the course This course engages the student with the native religious cultures of China and Japan: Confucianism, Daoism, Shinto, and the popular religious traditions of East Asia. In addition, we will encounter the important forms of Chinese and Japanese Buddhism which have woven themselves across these belief systems over the centuries. While we will initially approach each of these forms of religious life in isolation, emphasis will be placed on their mutual influence and interdependence, and upon the broad themes that characterize religion in China and Japan: worldly felicity and fortune, communication with the unseen world through divination and ritual, the ethics and imperatives governing the family, social and political spheres, and methods of ultimate personal transformation and liberation. The goal in this course is thus to generate for the student an appreciation of the integrated nature of Chinese and Japanese religious experience through a sequential study of its component religious traditions. Evaluation (see below for details) 4 Short Tests: 40% Mid-term: 30% Final Exam: 30% Course Materials (see below for details) Poceski, Mario Introducing Chinese Religions. Routledge.
