Lying in the fertile delta of the wide Yangon River, the city is filled with tree-shaded boulevards and shimmering stupas float above the treetops. It became capital in 1885, when the British completed the conquest of Upper Myanmar, ending the rule of the last Burmese kingdom during which, Mandalay was the capital. F Day 03 Yangon We begin with an introductory tour of the old colonial-style city center. The first stop is the gilded Sule Pagoda, dating back over 2,000 years. The gleaming octagonal pagoda was once used towards Shwedagon. Next we head to the the National Museum to inspect its treasures including King Thibaw Min Lion Throne. He was the last Burmese king who returned to Burma in 1908 by Lord Montbatten. We will also stroll through the bustling Bogyoke Aung San (Scott) Market. There are over 2,000 stalls in this pleasant covered market. One can find crafts, gems and fabrics from all corners of the country. In the afternoon we will visit the Botathaung Pagoda, named after the 1,000 military leaders who escorted relics of the Buddha from India over 2,000 years ago. We will inspect its marrvelous collection of antique Buddha images. Next we head to the Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda to see the huge reclining Buddha image. Late evening we proceed to the highlight of the trip a special sunset visit to the Shwedagon Pagoda. Said to be 2,500 years old, it is the most holy of all Buddhist shrines, epitomizing the serene grace of the country. It features a massive bell-shaped superstructure, covered by more 60 tons of pure gold (which is still being augmented daily). It is a perfect place to observe locals in the busy temple scene. They are making devotional offerings, talking, socializing, sweeping and cleaning (to earn merit), or just sitting and soaking up the golden 3 P a g e

sunset, which is the most beautiful time to visit as the stupa reflects the changing colors of twilight. The Raj Laureate once wrote about the Shwedagon a golden mystery a beautiful winking wonder that blazed in the sun. B/L/D Day 04 Yangon Bagan This morning we head to the airport and depart via morning flight on Air KBZ. Flight K7-242 leaves at 7:00 a.m., arriving in Bagan at 8:20 a.m.. Bagan is a vast plain on the side of the mighty Irrawaddy River, dotted with thousands of spectacular 800 year old temple ruins. William Somerset Maughham wrote about Bagan in The Gentleman In The Palour, the temples loom huge, remote and mysterious out of the mist of the early morning like the vague recollections of a fantastic dream. We will marvel at the pagodas in various sizes, rising up from the green fertile delta, most of which were built between 1057 and 1287 AD, before Kublai Khan s army moved in from the east. At time of King Anawrahta there are nearly 13,000 Buddhist temples here. We will explore the Manuha Temple, a thousand year old structure enshrines the unusual combination of three seated and one reclining Buddha. It is said that King Anawrahta, consumed by his new Buddhist faith, sent a message to King Manuha of Lower Myanmar to request a copy of the Buddhist scriptures, only to meet Manuha s refusal. So Anawrahta responded with force, invaded Lower Myanmar and captured everything from monks, elephants, architects, the coveted scriptures, and Manuha himself. During the life time imprisonment that follows, Manuha built a pagoda with two huge Buddha, one seated and the other reclining, both in cramped space, to symbolize his sadness and incarceration, and to describe his belief that the death would be his only release from the prison. We will also tour the golden stupa of Shwezigon Pagoda, one of the most important reliquary shrines where we can have a look of the exquisite images of the 37 nats housed in a small hall. Built between 1086 and 1090AD, this pagoda s graceful bellshape later became the proto type for many stupas in the country. Also on the agenda is the fine 12 th century frescoes of the Jataka Tales, adorning the corridors of Gubyaukgyi Cave Temple at Wetkyi-Inn. Passing through Tharaba Gateway we head to Old Bagan to check-in at the 4.5 star, deluxe, Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort. Afterwards we continue to explore the wonderful ruins of Bagan, and visit the striking Ananda Temple. This is an impressive whitewashed masterpiece of Mon architecture with four 4 P a g e

standing Buddhas, considered to be one of the largest, best preserved and most revered of all Bagan temples. It was built around 1105 AD with a perfectly proportioned structure, showcasing the style of the Early Bagan period. Enjoy Orient Odyssey s unique People to People Contact, we will visit the Myinkaba village known for producing the finest lacquer ware in the country. Stop by one of the workshops and learn about the painstaking process of laureate making and decoration. Enjoy interaction with shop owners and villagers and some interesting insight of the authentic village life of Burma. We will also take in the fine stuccowork at Gubyaukgyi Temple. At dusk, we will climb one of the ancient monuments to take in the breathtaking sunset. Walk on ancient stairways that led us up from the square bottom terraces to the round base of the stupa. From here we enjoy splendid panoramic views of the surrounding plains strewn with ancient temple and ruins and the mighty Irrawaddy River. B/L/D that visited yesterday, or explore new stops. Baloon Ride Over Bagan Enjoy an unique opportunity to see the ancient city from a different perspective. From a high flying balloon one would get a magnificent birds-eye view of thousand-years-old pagodas, temples ruins and the mighty Irrawaddy River. The champagne flights at sunrise last just under one hour the balloon is guided by gentle winds not exceeding 15 miles per hour. The service was provided by a renowned European firm and is considered one of the most beautiful experiences in the world. Mount Popa and Salay Village This is a full day excursion. Enjoy a scenic drive to the famed Mount Popa, the traditional home of the animist nat worship which predated Buddhism in Myanmar. Small shrines to nat (spirits), Day 05 Bagan Today is designed as a free day to rest, shop or explore at our own pace. Our guide can assist you to secure any of the following optional excursions (extra cost) upon request. B Horsecart Ride To the Ruins Hire a horse cart for couple of hours, to ride through the ruins, pagodas and monuments. Stop along the way at our discretion. We can re-discover the sites many of whom have wonderfully whimsical names such as Mr. Handsome and Bandy Legs, are found lining the steps up the mountain. Enjoy the stunning view from the summit. Then we head to the village of Salay to observe the unspoiled, authentic village life. Day 06 Bagan Mandalay / Mingun After breakfast, we will board Air KBZ s flight K7-262, departing at 7:35 a.m., reaching 5 P a g e

Mandalay at 8:10 a.m.. Mandalay served as the last Burmese Royal capital before the British annexation. The unfortunate fir in 1945 burned down the Great Palace to nothing but teak walls left. Mandalay is also the cultural center of the country, famed for the traditional crafts, gold and silver works, silk tapestry, as well as the exquisite marble and teak carvings. It is also home to the country s most important Buddhist Monasteries, where almost sixty percent of all the Burmese monks reside. We begin our sightseeing with an excursion to Mingun and board a wooden boat cruising up the Irrawaddy River. On route we enjoy an interesting glimpse of the local river life fishing villages, bullock carts, corn fields, market boats, women attending to their washing, and children playing in the water. Upon arrival, one would first see the ruins of the unmistable Mingun Paya, a failed attempt on the world s largest pagoda. Despite years of labor by thousands of slaves and prisoners, the project was halted in 1819 when the king died, leaving a brick base about a third of its intended height. In 1938, the earthquake further inflicted a major damage with a deep crack. We will also explore the other nearby highlights: The Mingun Bell cast in 1808 and weighing 90 tons, it is the worlds largest uncracked bronze bell; the Hsinbyume Paya beautifully designed and constructed by the king in memory of his wife, a Hsinbyume Princess. Cruise back to the city, we check-in at the 5 star, luxurious, Sedona Hotel Mandalay for a short rest, before seting out again to the Mahamuni Pagoda, home to the city s holiest Buddha statue, which is almost distorted from the gold leaf that the devout daily lavish it with. The red and gold colonnades around the temple displays six striking bronze Khmer sculptures, said to be taken in a raid from Angkor Wat in Over the years they were taken and retaken by various Burmese kings. Some were melted down to make cannons. Out of the 30, only 6 remained and came to rest in Mandalay. We also visit the intricately carved Shwenandaw Kyaung, the Golden Teak Monastery, which showcases the pinnacle of the exquisite traditional wood building techniques. It is indeed a fragile reminder of the old Mandalay Fort that was burned down in At one time this building was part of the palace complex and the private apartment of King Mindon and his chief Queen. After his death, in 1880 the building was dismantled and reassembled again on its present site as a monastery. When the palace complex was destroyed by fire, this monastery came to be the only reminder of the original splendor of royal life. We will our time to study the intricate carvings, and visualize the lavish life of the royal court. Also on today s agenda is a visit to the Kyaukdawgyi Paya, famous for a huge Buddha statue carved out of a single block of local marble. The colossal marble block was mined from nearby Sagyin, and required 10,000 men laboring for 13 days to transport it via a canal to the current location. At Sandamani Paya, we will see a cluster of slender white washed stupas built on the site of King Mindon s temporary palace, used while the new Mandalay Palace was 6 P a g e

under construction. The last stop of the day is Kuthodaw Pagoda, also regarded as the world s largest book. Where 729 marble slabs, all were inscribed with the Buddhist scriptures of tripitaka. At dusk, we will climb the Mandalay Hill to enjoy the golden sunset over the city. B/L/D Day 07 Excursion to Amarapura / Sagaing / Ava (Inwa) Our visit begins at the ancient capital of Amarapura, the City of Immortality. One can still see the four pagodas that marked the four corners of the city walls, the watch tower and the treasury building. Through Orient Odyssey s People to People Contact we enjoy a special visit to the Mahagandayon Monastery. This Rivers. The quiet rural oasis was once the capital of Burma from 1364 to Switch from boat to horsecart, we ride through the ancient city walls and stop at the impressive Bagaya Kyaung, a monastery built of teakwood, supported by 267 teak posts. We venture through the main hall on a raised platform, to the monk;s quarter and the library, home to an interesting collection of palm-leaf manuscripts. Also on today s agenda is the brick and stucco monastery called Maha Aungmye Bonzan (also known as Ok Kyaung). It was built in 1818 by King Bagyidaw s chief Queen for the royal abbot Nyaunggan Sayadaw. Continue with our exploration, we will reach the Nanmyin Tower, the famous Leaning Tower of Ava. The 89 ft high masonry watch tower was prestigious monastery houses over 1,000 monks of all age groups. Our specially planned logistics enable us to observe the daily midmorning alms giving. Feel free to chat with the monks to obtain interesting insight into the monastery life. Next we head to the picturesque Sagaing Hill, which is the country s spiritual center and Buddhist devotees favorite retreat. It is crowded with hundreds of pagodas and monasteries. Thousands of monks and nuns retreat here for meditation and contemplation. Today we will stroll through most famous Sun U Ponya Shin Paya, U Min Thonsei Paya and Kaung Hmu Daw Paya, enjoy the unique architectural styles and the serene beauty. Enjoy a short ferry ride to Ava (Inwa), located on an island between the Irrawaddy and the Myintnge once part of the royal palace. The earthquake in 1838 shattered its upper portion, causing the remaining structure a precarious tilt. It is still possible to go up to take a lovely view though. At day s end, we return to Amarapura again to stroll on the 150 year old U Beins Bridge. The picturesque rickety teak bridge extends over a kilometer across the Taungthaman Lake, curved to withstand wind and waves. From the bridge we can enjoy the views of lush rice field and 7 P a g e

small villages. At dusk, the bridge teems with monks and local people as they stroll home or linger to enjoy the colors of the sunset. We eill enjoy this perfect opportunity to mingle with the locals, many of whom are eager to communicate with travelers, displaying the friendly and kind nature of the Burmese masses. B/L/D Day 08 Mandalay Heho Pindaya Today we will venture into the Shan States in the eastern corner of Myanmar. It is the largest state in the country, extending east to Laos and the Golden Triangle, north all the way to the Chinese border. It is home to many hill tribes including Pa- O, Taunggyo, Palaung, and Danu. Most of them are vegetable farmers while some, in the far reach of the state, grows opium poppy. Many hill tribes people wear black robes with colorful turquoise turbans. The air here is clean and fresh and the scenery beautiful: rolling yellow fields, green trees, and small villages dotted in the fertile valley. Our flight Air KBZ K7-244 will leave Mandalay at 9:55 a.m., reaching Heho at 10:30 a.m.. We embark on a scenic drive passing villages, rice fields and markets to the colorful highlands near Pindaya. After check-in at the local best, superior Pindaya Hotel, we set out to explore Pindaya Caves, ensconced in a limestone ridge from which one can have a sweeping birds eye view of the valley and the lake. Inside the cavern cambers there are more than 8,000 Buddha images of different age, made from alabaster, teak, marble, brick, lacquer and cement. Today we will also see the Shwe U Min Paya, a cluster of low stupas just below the ridge near the cave. On the full moon of Tabaung, this town - Pindaya hosts a colorful and interesting pagoda festival. B/L/D Day 09 Pindaya Inle Lake After breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive past tribal villages and colorful markets to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway village to the famous Inle Lake. Switch our bus to a wooden boat, we will ply the smooth water of the Inle Lake, passing villages built on stilts and floating gardens tethered by bamboo poles. Inle Lake is famous for these floating gardens cleverly cultivated by the Intha lake dwellers. A snarl of lake silt and weed produces, after about 50 yards, a thick layer of humus that can then be turned into a floating vegetable or flower garden buoyant enough to support a human s weight for a brief time. The Inthas tend their lake gardens from long, banana-shaped boats, and row standing up, with one leg wrapped around the oar, leaving both hands free to fish or maneuver the nets hence they are called the leg-rowers. The lake, with its shore and islands containing 17 Intha Villages, is considered to be the most beautiful area of Burma. During our boat ride to hotel, we take in the serene view of calm waters dotted with patches of floating vegetation and fishing canoes; high hills rim the lake on all sides. After check-in at the 5 star, deluxe, Inle Resort, we head to the southern part of the lake. Through Orient Odyssey s People to People Contact we will stop at Inn Paw Khon - a 8 P a g e

Lotus and silk weaving village to enjoy interactions with villagers and children for an interesting insights of their daily life. We also tour the Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, one of the oldest on the lake and famous for its jumping cats, which have been trained by the monks to jump through hoops. Nowadays monks do not ask cats to jump for tourists anymore, but the site still remains an interesting and popular one to browse. We end our day at Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, one of the holiest religious sites in southern Shan State. The beautiful temple is a favorite among local villagers for daily prayer and important ceremonies. Take in the serene beauty of sunset as we return to our hotel by boat. B/L/D Day 10 Inle Lake (An Excursion to In Dein, Sae Ma & Ywar Ma Village) This morning we take a scenic boat excursion crosses the lake to the western shore. Our sampan will navigate upstream in a long canal, passing through water locks and narrow waterways surrounded by lush bamboo and rice fields. Before long we will reach the hidden treasure of In Dein Temple Complex. After going ashore, we follow the path to a covered stairway leading to the beautiful Alaung Sitthou area, where one can find hundreds of ancient pagodas, undiscovered carvings and unscratched ruins hidden in the overgrown moss and greenery. We will spend some time exploring the site at our own pace, enjoying the fantastic views. Next we hike through the rice fields to the village of Sae Ma. As part of Orient Odyssey s People to People Contact, we will take a walk through the village, stopping at a village school, enjoying interaction with villagers and children. We will also travel to one of the village monasteries to observe the monastic activities and daily life on the lake. On route back to our hotel, we make another stops at Ywar Ma Village, the largest on the Inle Lake, and home to the Padaung Long Neck Women. We will stroll through its interesting cottage industry and workshops, and observe tribal man and women at working in goldsmith, silk weaving, umbrella making, Shan bags, gold and silver wares Returning to our beautiful hotel, the remaining of the day is free for us to explore, rest, and take in the golden sunset over the lake. B/L/D Day 11 Inle Lake Market* Yangon After breakfast, a scenic drive takes us back to the Airport in Heho. On route we will see if there is any markets that worth to stop.
