1 From: Upaya Subject: Impermanence. Oct. 6, Upaya Zen Center Newsletter Date: October 6, :47:52 PM MDT To: 1 Attachment, 2.4 KB Save Slideshow October 6, 2008 UPAYA INSTITUTE and ZEN CENTER Santa Fe, New Mexico It may be asked how it is possible for economics to be free of values when, in fact, it is rooted in the human mind. The economic process begins with want, continues with choice, and ends with satisfaction, all of which are functions of the mind. Abstract values are thus the beginning, the middle and the end of economics, and so it is impossible for economics to be value-free. Yet as it stands, many economists avoid any consideration of values, ethics or mental qualities, despite the fact that these will always have a bearing on economic concerns. -Phra Payutto. Buddhist Economics Barn's burnt down- Now I can see the moon. -Masahide Impermanence abounds around the world. During this unsettling time, we watch, wait and take refuge in buddha, dharma, sanga. No writing experience is needed, just a willingness to be fully present. Please call Jean at or for more information: jean@upaya.org For more details: PRISON OUTREACH PROJECT Excerpt of a letter from an inmate: "I must admit that I am ignorant to the details of Buddhism, but I am also very interested in learning as much as possible and very sincere in possibly applying the practice to my life. From the little that I do know, I understand that much is the basis of peace and harmony, which I am in very desperate need of. Upaya s Prison Project offers contemplative practices for inmates in the county jail, juvenile detention center and via letter writing. Our mission is to teach meditation and other mindfulness

4 practices as a means of ending the cycle of addiction, violence and incarceration for men, women and youths. Currently our volunteers are teaching adults and teens through explicit meditation and yoga as well as through creative writing, GED/ESL and the Way of Council. The Project also includes the Pen Pal Program, where inmates across the country can share their spiritual practice and life experience through letter writing. Volunteers are happily welcomed into any of the programs. Please contact Ray Olson at nanrayols@aol.com for information about the adult program; Shakti at shaktima0@gmail.com for the juvenile program; and Jim Dunn at jamesmdunn@earthlink.net for the pen pal program. Donations are greatly needed and always appreciated for simple expenses such as mileage, postage and books for inmates and volunteers. Even your small donation would be warmly welcomed.
