3 August Continued possible to attend as a day visitor. To secure your booking we are asking for a non-refundable deposit of 90. Lama Klaus met Lama Chime Rinpoche in New Zealand in 1985 and took refuge with him in He also met HE Tai Situ Rinpoche in New Zealand and attended his Mahamudra course at Samye Ling, Scotland, between 1990 and In 2008 Lama Klaus, with Chime Rinpoche s blessing, completed a three years and three months retreat at Karme Ling in the USA. Karme Ling is the Retreat Centre of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD), the North American monastic seat of His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa. More recently Lama Klaus did two dark retreats at Samye Ling of forty nine days each. His main practice is Mahamudra. David Crawford AN INTRODUCTION TO BUDDHISM Saturday 31 August Free of charge The programme is aimed at those who are starting out, those who have just started out, and newish practitioners who feel they would benefit from a fresh view of Buddhism. What is Buddhism really? On Saturday David will describe Buddhism and emphasise an uncomplicated, everyday technique of Buddhist meditation. By learning how this practice helps us develop an ease of mind, we will start to see how the Buddhist way can easily fit with our multifarious modern ways of living. We will discuss what the next steps are, and spend a little time in meditation. David took refuge with Lama Chime Rinpoche at Marpa House in He also took refuge with HE Tai Situ Rinpoche in 1987 at Samye Ling. On advice from Lama Chime Rinpoche his practice since then has been Shiné meditation in a close connection with Marpa House. Now retired from working life as a scientist, businessman and teacher, David is glad to introduce Buddhism and Buddhist practice when and where needed. He is a committed student of Vajrayana Buddhism. September Sunday 1 September am and 2.30pm A day of Calm Abiding meditation, led by David Crawford. This day follows on from the previous day's Introduction to Buddhism. We will put our Buddhist practice into perspective, and meditate some more. For those starting out it will be better to come on Saturday, and then join in on Sunday if possible. Karrim Rabi-laleh THE NATURE OF MIND Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September am and 2.30pm Have you ever wondered what the nature of mind is? Have you ever looked for the root of your mind? If so, this weekend is for you. Karrim will offer a relaxed and practical approach to meditation, drawing on the wisdom of the Mahamudra and Dzogchen lineages. Each session will be split into half meditation and half instruction along with questions and answers. Karrim Rabi-laleh has been a student of Lama Chime Rinpoche's since taking refuge in February He lived at Marpa House for two and a half years and was the Secretary for one year. He hopes that his light-hearted approach to spirituality and his personal experiences will help create an atmosphere which is beneficial for all those who attend. Sunday 15 September am and 2pm Anyone with some knowledge of Tibetan (who can read Tibetan and use a dictionary) is welcome to join in a day of reading and translating. VOLUNTEERS GARDENING WEEKEND Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September Please come and help to get the garden ready for the winter. Staff will be at hand to advise on what needs doing, but there will also be plenty of time to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the House. Accommodation and meals will be provided free to volunteers.
4 October Sunday 6 October am and 2.30pm CELEBRATION OF RINPOCHE'S BIRTHDAY Saturday 12 October pm You are all invited to join us in celebrating Rinpoche's birthday. This day is always a joyous well-attended occasion which gives the sangha the opportunity to show our appreciation of all that Rinpoche does for us. We will begin with the offering of kataks, followed by a tea party. Please bring food to share. If you would like to come to lunch, please contact the Secretary well in advance as numbers for lunch are limited. YOUNG SANGHA WEEKEND Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October The Young Sangha Weekend is open to anyone between 18 and 40 who is interested in Buddhism and meditation. Newcomers are particularly welcome. The weekend will follow an informal structure including meditation, chanting and discussion. All the cooking will be done communally. Please contact Ben Henriques who organises the weekends via Marpa House if you are interested in attending. Sunday 27 October am and 2pm Another day of reading and translating Tibetan, for those with some experience. We will be working on a text of the group's choosing, which will probably be a sadhana for practice. November Sunday 3 November am and 2.30pm BLACK-TIE DINNER AND DANCE IN ASHDON VILLAGE HALL TO CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF MARPA HOUSE Saturday 9 November - 7pm Tickets cost 20 each and are available via PayPal on our website or from the Secretary. The event will feature live music, food, dancing and much more. 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF MARPA HOUSE Sunday 10 November pm On this day, forty years ago, HRH Crown Prince Tenzing Namgyal of Sikkim officially opened Marpa House. Further details on how we will mark this special event will be circulated by nearer the time. Sunday 17 November am and 2pm Anyone with some knowledge of Tibetan (who can read Tibetan and use a dictionary) is welcome to join in a day of reading and translating. The Venerable Tenzin CARRYING THE DHARMA INTO DAILY LIFE Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November am and 2.30pm Too often, we separate our practice and our daily life, when we really need to unify the two. In Vajrayana, our everyday activities can be part of our practice. We need to pay attention and ensure that our thoughts and actions are anchored in the Dharma. In this weekend we will examine how to do this, even by using our suffering as a path to freedom. Sessions will include a short discourse, general discussion and questions. Four areas will be dealt with - family life, working life, hobbies and samsaric addictions. The Venerable Tenzin has been a student of the Lama Chime Rinpoche since Tenzin took ordination with HE Tai Situpa in 1989 and has been Secretary at Marpa House. He is a follower of the path of devotion and he also likes gardening.
5 December Sunday 1 December am and 2.30pm THE VENERABLE LAMA ALASDAIR Topic to be confirmed nearer the time Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December am and 2.30pm Sunday 15 December am and 2pm Last chance this year to join us in a day of reading and translating Tibetan. John Howard SILENT RETREAT Friday 27 December to Thursday 2 January Course fee: 192, including food and accommodation John Howard will give an introductory talk at 7pm on Friday evening and the retreat will start formally after the Chenrezi Puja. Marpa House will then be silent until Thursday 2nd January. There will be scheduled meditation sessions in the shrine room every day. The retreat will conclude with a Micheu Dorje Guru Yoga puja on Thursday morning. Please book early. John's silent retreats are very popular and places are limited, so that everyone can have their own single room. Part-time attendance is not possible and you will have to commit for the full course to include 1st January. It will also not be possible to attend as a day visitor. To secure your booking we are asking for a non-refundable deposit of 90. Marpa House Chös Khor Ling Rectory Lane, Ashdon, Saffron Walden, Essex, CB10 2HN mail@marpahouse.org.uk
