1 Religion from the Land of Dragons: Course Cluster for Fall 18 The Religious Studies Department is offering a cluster of courses focusing on East Asian Spiritual traditions. These courses can be taken individually, or they can be combined to increase focus and deepen understanding. These classes include: RS 391 Wisdom of the Tao RS 345 Taijiquan (CR/NC) RS 394 City of 10,000 Buddhas (CR/NC) RS 394 Zen Weekend (CR/NC) Each of these classes will function as a stand-alone class that offers an introduction to its own specific topic. But students are encouraged to sign up for two or three or even all four of these classes to deepen their understanding and broaden their exposure. For those students who sign up for RS 391 Wisdom of the Tao and 345 Ta iji, we will work together 5 days per week, which will enable us to build relationships among ourselves, and to intensify our exposure to Zen, Taoism, and the spiritual arts of China, Korea, and Japan. For more information, contact: Prof. Herbrechtsmeier, Or Prof. Biondo, vfb2@humboldt.edu

2 Wisdom of thetao RS 391 Fall 18 This course is an introduction to East Asian spirituality and consciousness deriving from Taoist, Confucian, and Zen Buddhist traditions. Intense Discussion Experience Meditation Linked with Taoist and Zen Groups Emphasis on Transformation of Consciousness Build Relationship with other students in learning community Other options decided by class (e.g., films, martial arts) Wisdom of the Tao links with other classes to deepen experience and provide broader exposure for students who want a semester of intensive study in East Asian Spirituality. We will also learn various exercises deriving from Qigong and Xing Yi Quan, and consider classic Chinese texts such as the Tao Te Ching, Confucius Analects, and the I Ching. The course is CR/NC, in order to emphasize the sheer joy of learning, and to limit the effects of judgment, evaluation, and ranking. Class meets Fall 2018: MWF 8:00am Gist 102
