A Lohith 4 A b s t r a c t Vamana Karma is the first and foremost pradhāna karma among the Panchakarma which is successfully used in treating Kaphaja disorders along with healthy individuals. It also comes under the ritus śodhanaas per the basic purpose of śodhana on behalf of seasons. So here is an observational study of vamana karma over 150 patients in the management of the Kaphaja disorder along with healthy volunteers. Different parameters are taken to decide the samyakśuddhi which helps in the proper evacuation of vitiated Kapha doṣa. It also proves that Vamana karma is the first modality to treat the Kaphaja disorders. 2 INTRODUCTION Vamana karma is well known Panchakarma procedure to eliminate the prakupita doṣa out from the body. It removes apakva pitta and kapha forcefully through upper channels [i] and it is also called as ūrdhva bhagahara chikitsa. Acharya gave a simile of kedarasetu, in the same way kaphaja roga cannot get provoked when kapha is removed through the vamana karma [ii]. According to the doṣas, vamana should be conducted when kapha is vitiated; pitta occupies the place of kapha and vāta predominant kapha state [iii]. As per Acharyas if person undergone Vamana karma never suffers from kāsa (cough), malavriddhi in srotas (accumulation of waste in body channels), svara bheda (hoarseness of voice), nidra(sleepiness), tandra (drowsiness), mukha durgandhata(bad smell in mouth), vishaja anupadrava (complications of poisoning), kapha srāva (excessive salivation or toxaemia), grahani (malabsorption syndrome) [iv]. Also samyak śodhana results into clarity of buddhi (thought), strength of indriyas (sense organs), stability of dhātus(body tissues), improvement of agni (appetite and digestive capacity), delay of ageing. The Vamana procedure if adopted properly, lightness of the body, clarity of heart (hridya), throat (kanṭha) and head (śiras), happiness and weakness are the usual symptoms following samyaka śuddhi (proper purification) lakṣaṇa [v]. disorder in the morning for three to seven days till complete Snehana lakṣaṇa were achieved. After achieving the samyaka snigdha lakṣaṇa, sarvāñga abhyañga was done for 20- minutes, along with bāṣpa sweda for minutes on the day of viśrāma kāla. And for Vamana karma viśrāma kāla is for one day. On the day of Vamana karma again sarvāñga abhyañga was done for 20- minutes, along with bāṣpa sweda for minutes just prior to the main procedure of vamana karma, at kapha kaala. On the Vamana day in the morning, the patient was given; Yavāgu 0 gm Milk 2 litres Auṣadha quantity sufficient (as per roga and rogi bala) Yaṣṭimadhu phāṅṭa 5 litres Saiñdhava jala quantity sufficient OBSERVATION Observation is based over the criteria which include gender, diagnosis of Kaphaja vikāra, total no. of vegas, level of śuddhi and āntikī lakṣaṇa of Vamana karma. 1. Gender: Analysis of gender of 150 patients shows 116 were female patients and 34 were male patient. Table no.1: showing distribution of patients MATERIALS & METHODS The present study was carried out at S.D.M. college of Ayurveda and Hospital, Hassan. Over 150 patients with Kapha predominant disease along with swastha (ritu śodhana) volunteers between the age group of 18 to 60 years were taken. Gender No. of Patients % Male Female Chart no. 1: showing distribution of patients Exclusion criteria Patients of hypertension, diabetes, renal diseases, pepticulcer, jaundice, acute infections, dehydration and any other chronic disease which is not suitable for Vamana Karma as detected by clinical history/investigations. Age group: Lesser than 18 and above 60 years. Patients with lactose intolerance. Pregnant/lactating women. 3 Skin disorders, Ārtava duṣṭi, Ovarian cyst, Madātyaya, Kāsa, Thyroid disorders (Hyperthyrodism/ Hypothrodism), and Swastha. When doṣa are vitiated the best way to attained arogya is the śodhana (removal of doṣa by its root) and it will never reoccur and help in the maintaining the proyajana of Ayurveda. Vamana karma is the unique solution in kaphaja vikāras DISCUSSION Ayurvedic treatment comprises of two major aspects of chikitsa i.e. samśodhana and samśamana. Panchakarma comes under Samśodhana and it is basically a bio cleansing regimen intended to eliminate the toxic elements from the body and thereby enhance immunity of the body. When doṣa are exceedingly vitiated, than expelling śodhana is the only way because śamana, Langhana, Pāchana etc having capacity to subside the doṣa but it they may recur but doṣas are pacified by śodhana never recur. Vamana Karma is the consider as the best in śodhana Karma [vi] and disease originated due to excessive kapha are pacified after the elimination of Kapha by Vamana [ii]. In this observational study the data obtained from different disease were mainly kaphaja vikāra and when vamana conducted in such patients shows effective result. Maximum number of patients attained madhyama śuddhi with Ānatiki śuddhi of Kaphanatta, which help in samprāpti vighatana of the roga and srotas śodhnana also, because of vitiated doṣa come in koṣṭha(āmāśaya).
