1 1 MODEL PAPER SUB: SPECIAL ENGLISH CLASS: X Time 3 hrs. Maximum Mark : 100 Instructions: 1. Read all the question carefully and then answer than according to the instruction 2. Marks of each question are indicated against it. 3. Section A consistists of reading section and carries 30 marks. 4. Section B consistists of writing and consistists of 30 marks. 5. Section C consistists of grammar and translation and consistists of 15 marks. 6. Section D is from the text book and carries 25 marks. Section (A) (Reading). Q.1 Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below: Village Swaraj is that it is complete republic independent of its neighbors for its vital wants and yet dependent for many others in which dependence is necessary. Thus the first concern of every village will be to grow its own food crop and cotton for its clothes. It should have a reserve for its cattle, recreation and play grounds for adults and children. Then if there is more land available, it will grow usually money crops, thus excluding 'ganja' tobacco, opium and the like. The village will maintain a village theatre, school and public hall. It will have its own water works ensuring clean supply. This can be done through controlled wells and tanks. Education will be conducted on a cooperative basis. There will be no castes, such as we have today and their graded untouchability. Nonviolence with its technique of Satyagrah and Non cooperation

2 2 will have the sanction of the village community. There will be a compulsory service of village guards who will be selected by rotation from the register maintained by the village. The government of the village will be conducted by the Panchayat of five persons annually elected by the adult village, male and female, possessing minimum prescribed qualifications. Questions. (1) Q.2 Read the following passage carefully and answers the question given below: A fairy tale is a fictional story that usually features characters (such as, fairies, goblins. elves, trolls, witches, giants, talking animals and birds) and enchantments after involving nearly impossible events. In modern times, a fairy tale ending refers to a happy ending, though there are examples of fairy tales that do not end happily. In cultures where demons and witches are seen as real, fairy tales are told as legends having historical actuality as in epics like the Iliad or the odyssey. However, they usually do not contain references to religion, actual places persons and events; they take place "once upon a time" rather than in actual times. The history of fairy tales is particularly difficult to trace, because only their literary forms have survived. Still, the evidence

3 3 of literary works at least shows that fairy tales have existed for thousands of years. The name 'fairy tale' was first given to them by Madame d' Aulnoy. Questions. If you are a medical man, think of some discovery which will bring healing to human race. If you are an engineer, aim at some new in invention. The mere act of aiming at some thing big makes you big. If my colleagues and others who function on the public stage today appear big lenders to you, look back on how we become so. We may have had some virtue and some ability, but essentially we become what we were because we had some ambition and pride, because we hitched our wagon to a star, because we tried to do big things and in so trying our stature increased a little. It is not why and what you say matters, but what you do. Think therefore of the vast opportunities that the world offers to those who are keen of mind, strong of character and fleet of foot. Think of the opportunities that India offers. I know better than you of the difficult problems of India, the suffering and misery of numberless people. We are trying to meet those problems and solve them, not by magic but by strong will and hard work. There is no magic in this world except the accessional magic of human personality and the human mind. It takes time and perseverance to do big things. It will not do to be faint hearted. One meets with failure occasionally, but one has yet to go on. Success does not come suddenly or without setbacks so you have these great

5 5 opportunities in India. Prepare yourself for them, grow strong in mind and body. Having the inner urge to do big things and have no doubts that you will do big things. Question.
