2 Oasis 9 Habits KS1&2 Assembly Forgiveness Choosing to forgive: how we say sorry Length: minutes Aims To understand more fully what forgiveness means To discover how we can show forgiveness and to recognise the impact being forgiving has on others To think about how to apologise when we make a mistake or say or do something wrong To consider the link between being forgiven and forgiving others To have opportunity to consider how faith and belief in God impacts people s sense of forgiveness This assembly has been written for KS1&2 to help children think about how we say sorry as part of the development of the habit of forgiveness. 3 KS1&2 Assembly Forgiveness Choosing to forgive: how we say sorry Sorry Statements Large cards with Sorry statements on such as the following; You accidentally spill some blackcurrant juice on a light coloured carpet Someone lends you a toy and you accidentally break it A friend shows you a piece of artwork they have made and you accidentally tear it. You join in with a joke about your friend and they hear about it You promised that you would tidy up your things at home and you forget. I didn t listen to Mum and I forgot my coat and now it s raining (You can also add your own Sorry statements that might be more pertinent to the lives of the children you are working with.) How sorry are you really? Scenarios Envelopes A set of large envelopes with some different scenarios in such as the following; Scenario One My sister really upset me as she was getting all my hair things out, so I pulled her hair. Mum made me say sorry. I did because Mum made me, but if she touches any of my things again, I will pull her hair again. Scenario Two I got sent to the Principal for talking in class and being rude to the teacher. I decided to stay in at lunchtime to catch up on the work I missed. I apologised to the teacher and I asked to be moved so I didn t get tempted to talk at the wrong time again. Explain Content 1. I didn t mean to! Today we are going to talk about a subject that can be difficult for both children and adults and the subject is forgiveness. Ask What do you think forgiveness is? What other words or phrases do you think of that might be connected to forgiveness? Read out a defi nition of forgiveness from the PowerPoint slide; 2. Have you ever made a mistake? Explain that we all have made mistakes and that this is a normal part of life and learning. The most important thing though, is to learn from the mistakes we make and also learn how to say sorry. Watch the short video of the Elmo from Sesame Street singing about being sorry. KS1&2 Assembly Forgiveness Choosing to forgive: how we say sorry Ask for fi ve volunteers and give each person one of the scenario cards to hold up high so that everyone can see them. Read, or if appropriate, ask the children to read these out, one by one, and then ask the rest of the children to decide which one of these is the most serious mistake and which is the least serious. You could line the children up in descending order so that it has a visual impact at the front of the assembly space. Scenario Three I borrowed my friend s FIFA game and now I can t fi nd it and my friend wants it back. I ve said sorry so I don t know why they are still upset. It was a birthday present, so it s not like it cost them any money! 4 5

Discuss How easy or diffi cult is it to make a decision about which is the most serious mistake? 3. Saying sorry If we make a mistake we like to be forgiven for what we have done or said. A part of this is learning to apologise or say sorry when we make a mistake or do something wrong. We all make mistakes whatever age we are. Some people (not all) think that a part of being forgiven is knowing that your apology has been heard and that it isn t something that we just admit to ourselves. This is why it is really important for us to really mean it when we say we are sorry rather than just pretending. 4. How sorry are you? Show the children the three large envelopes which contain three examples of How sorry are you really scenarios. Invite three volunteers to come and open the envelopes and read out the scenarios. Talk through the scenarios together; How many of these scenarios sound as if the person is sorry? Are there any that don t sound like the person is sorry? Which one do you think sounds like they want to apologise? Which one do you think sounds like they want to forgive? Time to vote; You are going to vote for the one that sounds most like the best apology. BUT you only have one vote each so the decision you make needs to be done thoughtfully and carefully. 5 KS1&2 Assembly Forgiveness Choosing to forgive: how we say sorry Explain 5. Challenge and Reflection Discuss the results of the vote. We like it if people apologise to us and sound like they mean it. Let s make sure that we are quick to apologise when we have made a mistake. As well as saying sorry when we have done something, let us also learn to forgive others when they have said or done something to hurt us. And whether we learn to forgive or whether we learn to say sorry, both of these things will help us feel a lot happier inside and out. Circle Time If appropriate to your setting, light a candle in a place that provides a focus for the children. Then invite the children to consider these two questions as a way of refl ecting on the content of the assembly: 1. When you do something wrong or make a mistake that affects someone else this week, what will you do? 2. When someone apologises to you what might you say to them that will help them know that you forgive them? Prayer God Help us to be good friends to those around us. Help us to say sorry when we have made a mistake or done something wrong even when it can be really hard to admit we have messed up in some way. And help us be the kind of people that can forgive others too so that we can all move forward and learn and grow together and not hold on to our anger or upset. Amen 8 9 9
