Michelle rarely overslept. She liked school and made good grades so I know she wasn't dragging her feet. I knocked again. "Michelle? Are you awake?" I glanced at my watch. I didn't want to barge into her room. I respected her privacy, but if she didn't get up soon she was going to miss the bus. I had no choice. I opened the door and immediately wished I hadn't. She was lying on her back. The sheets had been pushed down to her knees. She was naked. I am a modest man who raised a modest daughter. Seeing her bare bottom would have filled me with embarrassment if I hadn't been so overtaken with rage. She wasn't alone. A naked boy was sprawled next to her. He was on top of the sheets so I saw his entire muscular body. "Michelle!" I shouted. "What's going on here?" Michelle jerked away. She rubbed her eyes and she looked around. When she saw me, she shrieked, grabbed the bed sheet, and covered herself. The boy opened one eye and smirked. "Oh my God, Daddy!" Michelle said. "I'm so sorry. I overslept." "That's not the issue, young lady," I said. "Why are you naked? Who is this boy? What is he doing in your bedroom?" "Please close the door. I'll explain everything. Just let me get dressed." I backed out of the room and shut the door. My heart raced and face burned with equal parts shame and anger. I went to the living room and paced the floor. How could Michelle do this to 1

2 me? She was only sixteen. I taught her to know better than to engage in premarital sex. And why had she kept this boy a secret? Michelle burst out of her bedroom. She was dressed for school. She found me in the living room and stood before me with her head down. I looked past her at her bedroom. There was no sight of the boy. "Where is he?" I demanded. "He left the same way he came in," Michelle said. "Through my bedroom window." I had a million questions but the school bus arrived and honked its horn. I could tell Michelle wanted to bolt out of the house, but she didn't move. She peered up at me. "Go to school," I said. "After school, come right back home. We have a lot to talk about." Michelle gnawed on her thumb. "I have soccer practice after school," she said. "Not today, you don't. Now go or you'll miss the bus." Michelle didn't need to be told twice. She flew out the door and disappeared into the bus. The house had an eerie silence after the recent chaos. I went into Michelle's room. It was easy to see how the boy entered without my knowledge. My house was a single level home. All Michelle had to do was open the window and the boy climbed right in, into her room and then into her bed. The disgusting scent of sex still clung to the air. I left her room and closed the door behind me. I don't drink alcohol, but this was one occasion in which I wished I did. I could have used a good stiff drink right then. I went into the kitchen and made myself a cup of hot tea instead. I sat at the dining room table and took a sip of my tea. It was too hot and scalded my tongue. I was so upset I almost took the Lord's name in vain. I wanted to hurl the cup across the room. Instead I took deep breaths and tried to untangle my thoughts. For some absurd reason, I kept asking myself why had she chosen to commit this sin with a white boy instead of a Korean boy? Or better yet, a Korean boy from our church? The answer was obvious. A Korean boy from our church would never have seduced Michelle into giving up her sacred virginity before marriage. Though I was only in her room for a minute, the image of Michelle lying on the bed with the white boy was etched into my mind. Especially the white boy. He looked like a giant next to her. He was a handsome All-American boy with blonde hair and blue eyes. He was tanned a golden 2

3 brown except around his pale midsection. His penis was thick and long and laid limp on his thigh. I wondered what his penis would look like erect. What was wrong with me? Why would I think something like that? Korean Americans are on average shorter than Anglo-Americans. Some white people use their height to literally look down on us. This white boy made it clear with the smirk on his face that he felt he had had the power to take whatever he wanted including my daughter's purity. Though it would solve nothing, I wanted to punch that smirking face. I was too upset to go to work, so I called the church and told them I would be working from home today. The rest of the afternoon was a blur as I waited for Michelle to come home. When Michelle finally came home, I was waiting for her in the living room. She inched into the room and sat carefully in a chair across from me. "I guess I'm grounded," she said. "You think?" I said. "Yes, you're grounded until I say otherwise." "I'm sorry, Daddy." "Sorry isn't good enough." She stared at the floor as tears rolled down her cheeks. "I know it hasn't been easy," I said. "For either of us. I've tried to be a good father and raise an honorable daughter. If it hadn't been for my faith in Jesus, I don't how I would have survived after your mother died." "You've been a very good father," Michelle said. "But I can't replace your mother." "You've done better than you think." "Then where did I go wrong?" Michelle shrugged. "You didn't do anything wrong. It's me. I'm getting older. I don't play with dolls anymore. I'm interested in boys. It's natural for girls my age." "That's no excuse!" My harsh tone caused Michelle to flinch as if I had slapped her face. "You don't understand, Daddy. Taylor is one of the hottest boys in school. And he's a senior. I couldn't believe that he was interested in me. I wanted him to like me." 3

4 "Is that how you get a boy to like you? By disrespecting your father? By committing a sin in my house right under my nose?" Michelle's tears became sobs. "You're right, Daddy. I'm so sorry. Can you ever forgive me?" "I forgive you. But it will be some time before I trust you again." "I promise, it won't happen again. I broke up with Taylor at school today. You don't have to worry about him climbing through my window." "I'm definitely not worried about that. I nailed your window shut." Michelle paled as she realized how serious I was about her behavior. "Can I go to my room now, Daddy?" she asked. "Yes. You can do your homework while I cook dinner. We're having spaghetti." 4

5 CHAPTER TWO SUMMER PLANS "Hey, Joseph," I said. "Are you free for lunch?" Joseph Hwang looked up from his messy desk. "That depends, Victor," he said. "Are you buying?" "My treat." "Suddenly, I am very hungry." It was a pleasant day with a nearly cloudless sky and only a slight breeze, so we walked from the church to the strip mall three blocks away. We tucked into a booth in our favorite restaurant. Joseph wasn't kidding when he said he was hungry. He ordered fried dumplings, seaweed soup, and steamed short ribs. I ordered tofu stew and nothing else. When our food arrived, Joseph was surrounded by dishes. He attacked one after another. I wasn't very hungry so I just stirred my spoon and occasionally slurped a little soup. Without looking up from his meal, Joseph said, "What's the problem, Victor?" "Is it that obvious?" I said. "You agreed to buy me lunch. It doesn't get more obvious than that." I bowed my head. "I don't mean to be stingy. I should offer more often." Joseph laughed. He was in his early 70s, but you would never know it. He was in excellent health and led an active lifestyle. That was why he was in charge of our Youth Ministry. "I'm teasing you, Victor," Joseph said. "You are one of the most generous people of know. You are generous with your heart and with your time and patience. Now, please tell me what's troubling you. I hate seeing you in such pain." I put my spoon down. "It's Michelle," I said. "She needs more spiritual guidance than I can offer." Joseph stopped eating and stared at me. "Michelle? I can't believe it." "It's true. She has strayed and needs someone to lead her back on track." "You can count on me." "I was thinking that she should attend vacation Bible camp this summer." 5

6 Joseph narrowed his eyes at me. "I can get you the paperwork when we get back to the church," he said. "Are you sure about this, Victor? She would be gone for the entire summer. You would be alone." I shook my head. "This is more important. I will miss her, but I will sleep better knowing she's getting the guidance she needs." "It's just Michelle is getting older. Soon she'll be going off to college." "Which is even more reason to strengthen her faith now before she's surrounded by temptation." "I agree, but Michelle isn't the only person I'm concerned about. Once she goes to college, then you'll be living alone. It's been ten years since Kim died. You're still a young man. You should think about dating again. Maybe even finding a new wife." I jerked back and my hand slapped the side of my bowl, causing soup to spill onto the table. "No one can ever replace Kim." Joseph studied the spilled soup and then looked at me with his kind eyes. "Don't worry, Victor. We'll take care of Michelle. You just take care of yourself." Joseph went back to shoveling food into his mouth. I felt my appetite return and ordered egg rolls. 6

7 CHAPTER THREE AN UNEXPECTED VISITOR Michelle had only been gone for three days and already I missed her. Still, I was happy that she was at camp. Joseph assured me that the fellow youth ministers would get back on the path to Jesus. When Michelle was home, I cooked dinner, but since it was just me I didn't feel like going through all the trouble. I bought some frozen dinners. I was taking a meatloaf dinner out of the oven when the doorbell rang. I couldn't imagine who it could be. I wasn't expecting anyone. I put the steaming aluminum tray on the kitchen counter with the foil still covering it and went to answer the door. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was the boy I had caught in bed with Michelle. "You have some nerve coming here," I said. "Go away before I call the police." "Whoa, calm down, Mr. Han," he said. "I have something to show you. Once you've seen it, if you still want me to leave, then I'll go and you'll never hear from me again." "I don't care what it is. You can never see my daughter again." "Things are over between me and Michelle. I came to see you. That's why I waited until she had left for summer camp before I came over." I had a bad feeling. He was too confident. "What is it you want to show me?" I said. "I think it would be better if we did this inside the house," he said. "It's not safe out here." "You're not allowed to enter my house ever again. Hurry up. My dinner is getting cold." The boy shrugged. "Suit yourself," he said. For the first time, I noticed that there was a large shopping bag by his feet. He rummaged through its contents and pulled out a computer tablet. Small video screens covered the main screen. He moved the cursor to open a video and my throat went dry. Did he have a sex video of him and Michelle? The last thing I wanted to see was my beautiful daughter doing unspeakable things with this disgusting boy. "Wait!" I shouted as I grabbed his wrist. "Haven't you done enough to Michelle?" He looked at my hand on his wrist. I let go. He laughed. 7

8 "You think this is me and Michelle doing it, don't you?" he said. "Naw. This is way better. But I could show you a video of me and Michelle doing it if that's what you're into." "I certainly do not want to see it. I demand that you destroy it." I thought about what he had just said. "What are you up to, young man?" "Take a look." He clicked open the video and hit play. There was a man seated at a dressing table in a bedroom. I recognized the man and the room immediately because it was me in my bedroom. The bad feeling I had earlier returned with greater force. My head spun and my chest hurt. "Turn it off!" I said. "Turn it off now." He paused the video. "See what I mean about it not being safe to do this here," he said. "Yes. Come inside quickly." I held the door open and he walked past me. He went to the living room and sat in my favorite chair. It wasn't until much later that it dawned on me that he knew where the living room was without me having to tell him. I carefully lowered myself onto the sofa and looked at the boy more carefully. "I understand now," I said. "You are the devil and you've come to torment me for my sins." "I'm not the devil," he said. "I'm Taylor Sterling. I go to the same school as Michelle or rather I did go to school with her. I just graduated. I had my eighteenth birthday last week." "Why are you telling me all this?" "I think we should get to know each other since we're going to be spending a lot of time together." "So, this is blackmail. What do you want?" "Lots of things. First, I want to know some details." "How did you get that video?" "Oh no. I'm not answering any of your questions until you answer mine." "Very well. What is you want to know?" "How long have you been a tranny?" "A what?" 9 In that instant, I knew nothing would ever be the same. Somehow this arrogant young man had discovered my darkest secret. If this ever got out, my life would be ruined. I would lose my job at the church. They would take Michelle away from me. My friends would shun me. My weakness and my sin would be revealed and the world would see me as a sexual freak of nature. I felt like my body was on fire and I was sick to my stomach. I couldn't breathe. I tried to stand, but my knees buckled and I pitched forward. I could see the coffee table coming toward me and before I hit it, the world went black. 9
