SERVICE, Sydney February 23, 2014 Elder: Ingrid Turner Musician: Annaliese Hoffman I have a riddle for you I want to see if you can guess what my riddle is about:- It is constantly there, Without it I would not survive People look at it to see inside me It is never fully covered up Everyone knows me because of it And yet I will never really see it. What is it? My face Today s sermon will have much to do with the consequences of never seeing ourselves in the flesh and how this affects the way we view the world and judge others. We will discuss reasonable or unreasonable outcomes. The invisible person in our lives. The fact that we will never see our face without a mirror or some type of video footage is fascinating. Indeed, without removing our eyes from out of their sockets and pointing them towards us, we have never seen ourselves in the flesh and in this dismembered state. I don t think we d want to see ourselves anyway. We can only see our person if we have a mirror, puddle, painting, sketch, photo or video. And even these only give us flat versions which are not that true to our appearance. Who here loves seeing photos of themselves? What about video footage that you are in? I dislike it, especially now. I avoid photos, as I feel embarrassed and often dislike how I look, and this is not how I want to be remembered. Even when at a healthy weight, I found footage of myself challenging, why? 1. Firstly, because I am the stranger in the photos sitting there amongst my friends and family and that s a bit weird. 2. Secondly, it is like a lottery, because I generally have no idea how good or bad I look on the day. And usually it is pretty bad. I don t understand the present craze of selfies except for their humour value.

3. And, finally, with moving pictures of myself I look weird, as there are angles of me I never get to see and they are pretty horrid and I also have far more jerky movements, and I look much more nervous and less confident than the image that I feel I am presenting. But here is the thing. Despite all of this, I still catch myself judging others to the societal norms of slimness and sleekness that I don t fit to an even greater extent. Surely I, of all people, should be totally accepting of everyone and their appearance, especially as in this Saal or hall I forever sprout the joy of loving the inner over the outer. I do so in my reflections and in my work with people. But, no, I see the ditherer, the person struggling with shyness or, as I myself do, overcompensating with nervous gestures. And I think, Oh my goodness, come on, shoulders back you dill, spit it out. It s so embarrassing and I shake my metaphoric head before another part steps in admonishing these thoughts. One main issue with the fact we can t ever see ourselves is that it is easy for us to have an incorrect or slightly unrealistic understanding of our selves. And we can forget our own faults, freeing us up to judge and criticise others in the most unreasonable ways. We so easily become hypocrites when we choose to judge and criticise others, and this opens us up far worse to judgement that being a judge of our own character. And this is exactly what the passage Luke is all about. Sometimes we need to take time to reflect and be peaceful and rely on that quietly spoken inner part of our person to see and connect with God, to seek grace; that means we have a quiet, deep love for others, in order to guide our actions. Let s sing Amazing Grace. Luke Why do you look at the speck in your brother s eye, but don t notice the log in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye, when you yourself don t see the log in your eye? Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck in your brother s eye. I love this passage in Luke; it is a key message in the Bible, repeated many times. This lesson was taught by Buddha some 500 years earlier: The faults of others are easier to see than one s own; the faults of others are easily seen, for they are sifted like chaff, but one s own faults are hard to see for they are hidden by pride. It means: do not point out the minor imperfections of others when you have glaring imperfections of your own. It means: deal with your own failings before you presume to tell others how to deal with theirs.

But it is human nature to find the splinter in the other person s eye, when there is a log in yours. We love to feel superior, especially when with a group, as we like to sit and comment on the issues of other people we know often in the guise of trying to be helpful, when really what we are doing is putting them down and publically throwing metaphoric stones at them behind their back. OMG, did you see the state of her hair today, she really is losing it at the moment, she just doesn t care about her appearance anymore. Yep, well maybe you have been too rushed to do important things in your life too, like spend quality time with your kids or you had an untidy appearance for a few days last week, due to a suddenly stressful time. Why not talk to the person, and check that all is well. There he goes again, speeding up the street at 100 miles an hour, it is just so reckless and disturbing. Music blaring kids these days just have no respect. Maybe things are tough in his life or he is exploring his new adult world, just like you did as a teenager. How often when in a rush have you exclaimed in dismay when a slightly distracted driver ahead is slow off the mark and, as a result, you don t get through that traffic light or you miss a large break in the traffic to turn into. But then a few days later as you dawdle up to the shops you find some car riding on your bumper bar for just the same reason yet they are considered impatient at your slow response driving. When did you last fall into the trap of unfairly judging someone? I d like you to contemplate this as I play a PowerPoint Don t judge me to the music of Chris Brown. Now, in other places, we would be told humans are incompetent to cope with this human frailty or sin and that we can only remove this sin from our lives by pleading with Jeeesuuus to give us the strength to avoid the devil and to change. Unlike these places, I think as Templers we would say that we are here to build God s kingdom on earth. Jesus was a great teacher. He had an implicit trust in mankind, rather than listing off rules and telling people they are hopeless and need to pray to gods for strength. Jesus engages our brain with questions and parables. He wants us to use our brains and develop our sense of goodness and of what is right or godly. He is saying be mindful, watch out for hypocritical judgements. In doing so, he shows that he believes we can understand and deal with this matter, in order to make the world a better place. We Templers generally think of the inner nature of God. I think Jesus asks us to use our head and listen to our heart or conscience before criticising others. It means taking time to think whether we have the fault using our logical brain and to check our moral compass our conscience to determine if it feels right to go ahead with the criticism, whether this is the most constructive and right path to take. He then trusts that we seek the kingdom of God, that is to make the world an increasingly better place, and therefore we do not wish to be unfair or hypocritical when criticising others.

So I challenge all of us to take care with our words: to criticise where it adds to a situation, but not when it is to make us feel superior at someone else s expense; to take time to avoid looking at someone without reflecting on ourselves first. In my Templer Care Worker role I often marvelled how little self-aggrandizement happened with our older folk. They talked with compassion about their friends, they asked me quietly to check on a person, they were so helpful and supportive of each other only every now and then taking a little dig at someone, publicly, generally knowing that the person wouldn t take it personally. They did not hold people up to be pitied or laughed at in order to put them down. When I did have a meeting with people who were making numerous unfairly critical comments of others, while I struggled to know how to handle the occasion, at the same time I marvelled at how rarely this occurred. I admired that most of the oldies really did live the Templer ideal most of the time and I had the privilege to work with them. The more often we open our eyes and admire those around us, and support them in time of need, and celebrate with those who have more materials than us, the more that a new dawning will happen in our lives, our community and in the world. Let s sing Morning Has Broken after which we will relax and finish with a meditative prayer and Anneliese s beautiful music. Let us relax and breathe the warm air around us in and out and relax Let us feel the breath pass gently through our noses, into our relaxing bodies Let us feel the warmth of sitting side by side, row by row within our community, for this short time Let us enjoy the time out from the hectic racing world outside Let us feel an inner warmth grow as we breathe in and out Let us feel love and warmth and tolerance for each other today, tomorrow and into the future. Let us use the times when we wish to criticise to reflect back on our own faults, and see where they lie Let us learn to listen to our heart and our conscience and, for those who believe, God Let us build the kingdom of heaven here on earth through love, care and support for those whose paths we cross Let us do this together as bricks in a temple, like our wonderful oldies

Let us support each other in difficult times, turning critical judgements into opportunities to learn and support Let us help ensure that our communities and governments support all people in the nation and those who seek refuge as we Templers did Let our community continue to value love and goodness above all else. I will say the Lord s Prayer after which Anneliese will play. The Lord s Prayer You can take your time now to open your eyes and be with us again as Anneliese plays the final reflective piece for this service.
