Dear Year 9 Here is your RE Home Learning Booklet. Included are questions that mean you have to use your own opinion, and also to imagine what other people may think, or believe. Please attempt all questions, come and see me if you get stuck or you don t understand something. 9 set 4 you don t need to do the exam questions but try and attempt them if you can. Miss Flower Task 1) Believing in God Answer the following questions as comprehensively as you can. i) Name 3 reasons why some people believe in God. ii) Explain why some people do not believe in God. iii) Explain how evil and suffering in the world mean some people don t believe in God. iv) What reasons might a Christian give to explain the existence of evil and suffering in the world?

Task 2) Religious Arguments for the existence of God 2A) Draw, or write if necessary, your own understanding of the Creation Story from the Bible on this page. Use your imagination and make it as creative and colourful (if drawing) as possible.

2B) Exam Question Practice Do you think Christians have to believe the Bible s explanation for the Creation of the world? Give 2 reasons for your opinion. (4 marks)

Remember, you must give 2 reasons, so, to help you, make sure you separate your answer into 2 paragraphs to ensure you give 2 separate and different, reasons.

Task 3) What happens when we die? 3A) Answer questions i and ii. i) Explain what YOU think happens when we die giving reasons for your belief. ii) Now explain what a Christian might believe.

3B) You must put the correct keyword in the box next to its meaning. All the words are at the bottom of the page to help you. The belief that, after death, the body stays in the grave until the end of the world when it is raised. When someone about to die has an out of body experience. Ending life painlessly when someone in great pain asks for death. Unexplained things which are thought to have spiritual causes, e.g. ghosts, mediums. The painless killing of someone dying from a painful disease. The belief that life is holy and belongs to God. Providing a seriously ill person with the means to commit suicide. The idea that life must have some benefits for it to be worth living. Ending someone s life painlessly when they are unable to ask, but you have good reason for thinking they would want you to do so. The removal of a foetus from the womb before it can survive. The idea that the soul lives on after the death of the body. The belief that, after death, souls are reborn in a new body. Abortion Quality of Life Euthanasia Resurrection Non-Voluntary Euthanasia Sanctity of Life Reincarnation Paranormal Voluntary Euthanasia Assisted Suicide Near-Death Experience Immortality of the Soul

Task 4 - Abortion 4A) Read each of the following points that could be used to answer a question about abortion. Decide which of these points are FACT and which are OPINION. Write FACT or OPINION next to each one. I think every woman should be able to make a decision about abortion for herself. Roman Catholics do not allow abortion. Muslims believe Allah breathes a soul into a foetus at 120 days. I am against abortion because I think it is murder. One of the Ten Commandments says you must not commit murder. I am completely against abortion because a foetus is a human being from conception. Pro-life means that a foetus is a life from the moment of conception and it has a right to life. Only Allah chooses when to end a life. I think the father has as much right to decide about an abortion as the mother. Doctors are trained to save lives and not to kill people. 4B) Use the space below to write your own opinion about abortion (giving reasons). I think abortion is

4C) Use the FACTS you have identified to help you answer the following question(c) about abortion. (c) Explain why abortion is such a controversial issue. (8 marks)

4D) Use the OPINIONS you have identified to help you answer the following question (d). Remember that marks will not be awarded for the opinion, but for the reasons that you give for it. (d) Every woman should be free to decide about abortion for herself. In your answer you should refer to at least one religion. (i) (ii) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion. (3 marks) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you. (3 marks) i) ii)
