2 Definition An allusion is a brief reference to a person, place, event, or passage in a work of literature, or the Bible, assumed to be sufficiently well known to be recognized by the reader (Survival Guide ). 3 Evidence In his Constitutional Convention speech, Benjamin Franklin states that...the People shall become so corrupted as to need Despotic Government, being incapable of any other..., which alludes to the British Parliament and their way of governing. Group 1

4 Group 2 Paradox: A paradox is a statement that may contain a truth but seems to contradict itself.

9 What is a Rhetorical Question? Rhetorical Question - a question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than to get an answer In other words it is a question that is not intended to be answered in order to persuade or to be used for a literary effect Group 4

11 Group 5 TONE: Tone: The way an author wants the reader to feel about their writing, and the way the author wants the reader to connect with the characters Tone can change throughout text, from paragraph to paragraph, or even from sentence to sentence!

Parallelism= a balance within one or more sentences of similar phrases or clauses that have the same grammatical structure Thought to make sentences easier to read Using parallelism in writing allows for neatness and correct grammatical structure An example: I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi -Martin Luther King Jr

15 Group 6 Effective Parallelism vs Faulty Parallelism Effective Parallelism - Two or more parts of a sentence that are similar, and ARE grammatically correct Ex. EP= Mary prefers to sing than to dance. - Creates rhythm/symmetry in a sentence, to emphasize the tendency between two or more ideas

16 Group 6 Effective Parallelism vs Faulty Parallelism Faulty Parallelism - Two or more parts of a sentence that are similar, but ARE NOT grammatically equal Ex. FP= My mom ran, ate lunch, and began sleeping. Correct parallelism= My mom ran, ate lunch, and slept. - Creates a not grammatically correct set of sentences and/or phrases. - Causes an awkward rhythm which does not allow the ideas of the sentence to flow

17 Group 6 An Example of Parallelism For when you assemble a Number of Men to have the Advantage of their joint Wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those Men all their Prejudices, their Passions, their Errors of Opinion, their local Interests, and their selfish Views.

19 Group 7 A Rhetorical Device: Commoratio a rhetorical term for dwelling on a point by repeating it several times in different words

20 Group 7 What is Commoratio? Origin: The Latin Word for Dwell English: Repetition of the same idea using different words. Difference: anaphora, epistrophe, epanalepsis and antimetabole describe repetition of same words. Commoratio describes repetition of an idea with different words. The use of this rhetorical device really instills an idea in the reader s mind.

Norton, 2012) The idea that the parrot is dead the obvious repeated idea "Brave Sir Robin ran away, Bravely ran away, away, When danger reared its ugly head, He bravely turned his tail and fled, Yes, Brave Sir Robin turned about, Undoubtedly he chickened out, Bravely taking to his feet, He beat a very brave retreat...." The brace act of retreating is repeated

22 Group 7 Examples of Commoratio from the speech In the speech, Franklin uses Commoratio to express his opinion on that he does not approve the constitution Examples I confess that I do not entirely approve of this constitution at present.. Thus I consent, Sir, to this constitution because I expect no better, and because I am not sure that it is the best The opinions I have had of its errors, I sacrifice to the public good

24 Group 8- Definition Argumentation: exploration of a problem by investigating all sides of it; persuasion through reason IN OTHER WORDS exploring a problem by looking at all sides and persuading the audience of their point. The point will allow the author to develop his work and make their point more clear gradually.

25 Group 8- Evidence I confess that I do not entirely approve of this Constitution at present, but Sir, I am not sure I shall never approve it. In these Sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution, with all its Faults, if they are such; because I think a General Government necessary for us that every Member of the Convention, who may still have Objections to it, would with me on this Occasion doubt a little of his own Infallibility, and to make manifest our Unanimity, put his Name to this instrument.
