1 A Course In Miracle Workbook For Dummies LESSON 184. The Name of God is my inheritance. W You live by symbols. 2 You have made up names for everything you see. 3 Each thing you see becomes a separate entity, identified by its own name or symbol. 4 By this naming you carve everything you see out of a unity of one. 5 By this carving out of parts of the whole into separate autonomous things, you designate its special attributes, and set the parts of the whole off from other things by emphasizing space surrounding each part of the whole. 6 This space you lay between all things to which you give a different name; all happenings in terms of place and time; all bodies which are greeted by a name. W This space you see as setting off all things from one another is the means by which the world's perception is achieved. 2 You see something where nothing is, and see as well nothing where there is unity; a space between all things, between all things and you. 3 Thus do you think that you have given life in separation of the whole One Self. 4 By this splitting out of parts of the whole into separate autonomous lives, you think you are established as a unity which functions with an independent will. W What are these names by which the world becomes a series of discrete events, of things ununified, of bodies kept apart and holding bits of mind as separate awarenesses? 2 You gave these names to these indivisible parts or attributes of the whole, establishing perception as you wished to have perception be. 3 The nameless things were given names, and thus reality was given the indivisible attributes as well. 4 For what is named is given meaning and will then be seen as meaningful. What is named will be perceived to be a cause of true effect, with consequence inherent in itself. W This is the way provisional reality is made by partial vision, purposefully set against the given truth. 2 Provisional reality s enemy is wholeness. 3 The egoic mind conceives of little things and looks upon them as your provisional reality that you seem to experience. 4 And a lack of space, a sense of unity or vision that sees differently, become the threats which the egoic mind s provisional reality must overcome, conflict with and deny. W Yet does this other partial vision of separate things still remain a natural direction for the mind to channel its perception. 2 It is hard to teach the mind a thousand alien names, and thousands more. 3 Yet you believe this teaching of fictitious alien names is what learning means. You believe learning names is the one essential goal by which communication is achieved, and concepts can be meaningfully shared. W This naming of indivisible attributes of the whole as separate beings is the sum of the inheritance the egoic world of separation bestows. 2 And everyone who learns to think that separation is so accepts the signs and symbols that assert the world of separation and perception is real. 3 It is for this belief in separation for which these symbols stand. 4 These symbols leave no doubt that what is named is there as a separate autonomous thing. 5 These symbols can be seen, as is anticipated. 6 What denies that these symbols of partial vision are

2 true is but illusion, for what you perceive to be your provisional reality is the ultimate reality according to your egoic split mind. 7 To question perception s partial vision as your reality is madness. To accept the presence of perception s partial vision to be your reality is the proof of sanity according to the ego s fear-based thought system. W Such is the teaching of the world. 2 This naming of indivisible attributes of the whole as separate beings is a phase of learning everyone who comes into time must go through. 3 But the sooner he perceives on what the teachings of separation rest, how questionable are the beliefs in separation s premises, how doubtful the results of separation, the sooner does he question the belief in the effects of separation. 4 Learning that stops with what the world of separation would teach stops short of meaning. 5 In its proper place, the naming of indivisible attributes of the whole as separate beings serves but as a starting point from which another kind of learning can begin, a new perception can be gained, and all the arbitrary names the world bestows can be withdrawn as the belief in separate, autonomous beings are raised to doubt. W Think not you made the world. 2 Think you made illusions, yes! 3 But what is true in earth and Heaven is beyond your naming. 4 When you call upon a brother, it is to his body that you make appeal. 5 Your brother s true Identity is hidden from you by the body that you believe he really is. 6 His body makes response to what you call him, for your brother s mind consents to take the name you give your brother as his own name. 7 And thus your brother s unity is twice denied, for you perceive him separate from you, and your brother accepts this separate name as his. W It would indeed be strange if you were asked to go beyond all symbols of the world, forgetting the symbols forever; yet were asked to take a teaching function. 2 You have need to use the symbols of the world a while if you are to teach that separation is not real. 3 But be you not deceived by these symbols for separation as well. 4 These names and symbols of separation do not stand for anything at all, and in your practicing it is this thought of their unreality that will release you from them. 5 These names and symbols of separation become but means by which you can communicate in ways the world can understand, but which you recognize is not the unity where true communication can be found. W Thus what you need are intervals each day in which the learning of the world becomes a transitory phase; a prison house from which you go into the sunlight and forget the darkness of the ego s world of separation. 2 Here in the Holy Spirit s sunlight you understand the Word, the Name which God has given you; the one Identity which all things share; the one acknowledgment of what is true. 3 And then step back to darkness, not because you think the ego s world of separation is real, but only to proclaim the unreality of the ego s world of separation in terms which still have meaning in the world that darkness rules. W Use all the little names and symbols which delineate the world of darkness. 2 Yet accept the names and symbols of separation not as your reality. 3 The Holy Spirit uses all of the symbols, but the Holy Spirit does not forget creation has one Name, one meaning, and a single Source which unifies all things within God Itself. 4 Use all the names the world bestows

3 on what the world perceives to be separate from the One Self but for convenience, yet do not forget all share the Name of God along with you. W God has no name. 2 And yet God s Name becomes the final lesson that all things are one, and at this lesson does all learning end. 3 All names are unified; all space is filled with truth's reflection. 4 Every gap is closed, and separation healed. 5 The Name of God is the inheritance God gave to those who chose the teaching of the ego s world of separation to take the place of Heaven. 6 In our practicing, our purpose is to let our split minds accept what God has given as the answer to the pitiful inheritance your ego s belief in lack, limitation and separation made as fitting tribute to the Son God loves. W No one can fail who seeks the meaning of the Name of God. 2 Experience must come to supplement the Word of God. 3 But first you must accept the Name of God for all reality, and realize the many names you gave its aspects have distorted what you see, but have not interfered with truth at all. 4 One Name we bring into our practicing. 5 One Name, which is the Name of God, we use to unify our sight. W And though we use a different name for each awareness of an aspect of God's Son, we understand that all aspects of God s Son have but one Name, which God has given them. 2 It is this one Name of God we use in practicing. 3 And through the use of this one Name, all foolish egoic thoughts of separations disappear which kept us blind. 4 And we are given strength to see beyond egoic perception. 5 Now our sight is blessed with blessings we can give as we receive. W Father, our Name is Your Name. 2 In Your Name we are united with all living things, and You Who are their one Creator. 3 What we made and call by many different names is but a shadow we have tried to cast across Your Own reality of our Christ nature. 4 And we are glad and thankful we were wrong and are not our ego s little s self. 5 All our mistakes we give to You, that we may be absolved from all effects our errors seemed to have. 6 And we accept the truth You give, in place of every one of our ego s misperceptions. 7 Your Name is our salvation and escape from the world of perception and time that we made. 8 Your Name unites us in the oneness which is our inheritance and peace. 9 Amen. Notes to Lesson #184 The Name of God is my inheritance. How you define yourself will determine what you believe is your birthright. Unless you perceive yourself to be part of the Oneness of All That Is, you will not believe that the Name of God is your divine inheritance. In the world of time and space, we live by symbols. The names we assign to everything are the symbols that we live by. When you name something, you assign to that item certain characteristics and behavioral traits. Naming assigns a past history that limits what you believe that item is capable of doing in the future.

4 To name is to limit. Once named, your beliefs will limit how you perceive that item will behave in the future. Your past beliefs are symbolized and frozen in time by the name you assigned to a particular object. Those same historic beliefs will be imposed upon that item by your mind in any future interactions. This results in any future experiences becoming a replay of your past beliefs since your mind limits what interaction are acceptable encounters with that item in the future. When you name something, you do not just define it but you also make it real. These names and definition become the constraints of your provisional reality because when you accept the name, you also automatically accept the limitations that are associated with that name. The goal of naming is to break up the unity of the whole by separating the whole into various specific attributes of the whole. Next, naming takes these special attributes and emphasizes the space that we perceive to exist between the parts of the whole. It then assigns special names to the indivisible parts. These names are then falsely assumed to possess separate, independent and autonomous existences. These artificial parts are then perceived to have powers that can impact and change other aspects of the whole. When we name, we emphasize the space between what has no separate reality since there is only one whole. Naming obscures the reality of the continued indivisible existence of the whole from our vision. This partial vision creates the illusion of space and makes the separation appear real. By naming, we separate the indivisible whole into special parts. We ignore the true interrelationship and interdependence of the parts that comprise the indivisible whole. Naming is the means that is utilized by our egos to create the world of perception and separation. What we perceive to be our provisional reality is made with partial vision which ignores the oneness of the whole. Partial vision s goal is to separate the unity and fragment the whole and thus make littleness appear real. We accept this partial vision to be our provisional reality. Today we find ourselves in a world of time and space. It is an illusionary world that was created through our split mind s belief that lack, limitation and separation are real. If you are to teach others the truth of what they are, you must meet them where they perceive themselves to be. Most perceive separation and limitation to be their reality. In order to communicate with them, you must use the words, symbols and dualistic language of their world of time and space. Yet, use their symbols to teach the fact that these symbols are not real. Use the language and symbols of separation to bring into their awareness the various aspects of God s Son. But also know and teach that true reality is that all aspects remain part of the indivisible shared oneness of the Mind of God. Let them know that all those attributes of God s Son also belong to them for that is their true inheritance. God is a Oneness. God is not the sum of the parts. Although the names assigned to the whole distort what we see, these distortions cannot change the truth. The truth is that there is no name but God s Name. We say God s name and we cease to speak. Use the Name of God to unify your sight and correct the illusions of separation that were created through partial vision. Restore the vision of Christ.

5 Do not allow the use of separate names to obscure the awareness that each of the various aspects of God is an indivisible attribute that belongs to the whole. Names and symbols have no ability to change the totality of the One Self. There is no separation. The only name that you should acknowledge as your own is the Christ. The Christ is your big S Self. The name of God and Christ are interchangeable symbols for the truth. God is and all things are God. There is nothing apart from God that is real. You are not an individual separate autonomous being. You are a Oneness of All That Is. This reality of your oneness with what we call God is the final lesson and your inheritance. When will you cease arguing for your limitations and instead choose to reclaim your rightful place within the Mind you share with God? Question: How you define yourself determines what you believe is your inheritance. You cannot believe you are both separate and also claim you are one with God. These ideas are mutually exclusive.
