Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture in this class the 18 students registered were given a student satisfaction survey. One of the questions asked was: What grade would you give the last lecture? The percentages for each grade throughout the semester are summarized in this mosaic plot: (1.3% C of below, 4.9% C+, 12.8% B, 36.9% B+, 42.6% A) In a follow-up question students were asked to justify their answers by asking them this question: Why did you give this grade? In the next page is a Wordle summarizing the word frequency in their answers. 1

What Was the Reason for Giving Your Grade? 2

August 23 Attempts 15 (Total of 16 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? The importance of statistics in the world today. What the expectations for this class are as far as being online. the syllabus That I have a teacher who clearly understands statistics, and may be relied on to help me also understand statistics and succeed in this course. The clearest thing was that this going to be a fairly flexible, laid back class, as far as classes are concerned. That the course is on-line and you are Cuban The explanation of what is expected of us during the class. The setup of your syllabus and understanding how the online class worked. It was very clear how I could also take the quizzes and the best way to use the homework to my advantage. It will be understandable if attentive to class. The information regarding the syllabus. The instructions on how the class is supposed to go and run. Everything was clear. I liked the clarity of the syllabus. Outlining exactly what we will be covering, when the exams are and the bonus point system as well as the links to programs we will need and who to contact if we need help in each area. You very clearly told us about yourself, your family, and your background. I knew much more about Cuban culture and the Peter Pan Operation after your lecture. Do the surveys. Statistics is a growing field with numerous possiblities in the business world. Ramon is originally from Cuba and at the age of 13 was sent to the U.S. during "Operation Pedro Pan." An exodus of around 14,000 Cuban children. What needs more explanation? Some of the syllabus wasn't completely clear, but we can read it on our own. All of the online stuff. I'm still a little confused as to what all I need to do online, the schedule, homework, etc. I am not sure whether I need to be online during the lecture time at 5:05 or whether I am able to view the lecture afterward. Can I watch it later that day, the next day?? A bit more on the Syllabus would be nice. The logistics of the online class. Although I believe that it will become much clearer in the next class session. Do we have to be at a computer at the designated class times or can we begin the lecture later online via the recording? How to access the online lectures and how to navigate the program. the online homework and how too I feel like for the first class meeting, nothing really needed to be explained any more clearly. I understood it all really well. I'm hoping I'll be able to figure out how to start the lecture but I'm sure it will be easy once I actually get on next Tuesday and try. I was not clear about operation "Peter Pan". 3

Where to find everything needed for this class. Such as, where the homework will be located and the quizzes. Also, if we are to attend a certain amount of actual classes instead of online classes to take quizzes and other assignments such as the introduction of classmates like the chapter 1 slides intended. Are the lectures this semester only live or can I watch them later again? How exactly the online technology will be used. I say maybe the whole part about skype needs explanation. I didnt completely understand just because skype was mentioned and then it was said we got to the online part of the class through blackboard. I can't think of anything that was left unexplained. What grade would you give the last lecture? A % B+ 40% B % C+ 0% C % D 6.667% F 0% Unanswered 0% Why did you give this grade? There were some technical difficulties (understandable) but the lecture ran over so I had to leave early and possibly missed something important and was late to my next class I liked the background history of life!! Cool! Because I enjoyed getting to know the professor. Your video and mini-biography were great. The organization was a bit out of whack on the expectations of the class. The technology and punctually situations led to the "B" grade. Overall entertaining. Only issue was tech. problems. You were late, you kept us late, and we did not talk about when grades will be posted, troubleshooting, etc. It was a first lecture and I have no standard by which to grade it, but I had no major qualms. Because I was still left a little confused about the course but am still excited for the year and to learn statistics. Because you were late and seemed unprepared. Because my expectations were exceeded. because of being late and not prepared, but overall the intro was great I felt the explanations of your syllabus and goals toward the class a success. I gave you a B just because sometimes i couldnt hear you and the skype issue. Overall, the lecture was kind of confusing. I didn't really get any useful information about the class out of it. Because I felt like you described the objectives of the class pretty clearly. Prof. Leon was very interesting to learn about. 4

How could I have improved the last class? more prepared I believe the only thing you could do better would to make sure everyone is on the same page. I have just been a little confused is all. No big problem though. Maybe being more prepared and spending more time explaining what the online stuff entails and how to use it. Maybe conclude on time. Overall though, I enjoyed the lecture. The pictures and videos were interesting and I appreciate your sense of humor We went just a little over time. Maybe only to have the technology ready You could have familiarized yourself with the technology of the classroom prior to the first meeting. It was perfect. No improvement necessary. Just the tech. issues. You spent a lot of time struggling with how to work the technology in the classroom even though you claimed to be the professor who is best at using technology. You could've had more familiarity and been more prepared for the new technological situation before the class. Get there a little earlier. Guessing that won't be an issue with the online classes. Slow down a bit and get organized. Have a more deliberate order. A detailed syllabus handout with completion dates would be a good start. Improvement can done in the sound, in my opinion. Cannot think of anything that needs much improvement. Could be more prepared with computer setup to the projector/smart board. How was the sound quality in this last class? fine! It was good. I had no problem understanding. Great! Pretty good. I had a small amount of trouble hearing you. I sat about halfway back and if this weren't an online course I would move closer to the front in the future. Good A bit hard to hear in the large room. Speaking a bit louder would be nice. Great. The sound was good once it got to working. No. Sound quality was good. once the sound worked it was great It was good. The classroom wasn't too large so I had no troubles hearing you. It was good quality except for a few occasions. I heard you just fine. We will see how well everything works online. 5

August 28 Attempts 19 (Total of 19 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? The different types of data, who what when where why, and catagorical and quantitative. All are clear. What data was and how it is used in the world, and also how surverys can be misleading. That statistics aren't just simple numbers. Statistics is very, very complex requiring high levels of infrastructure and organization. syllabus The clearest thing to me was the difference in Categorical and Qualitative data. Explained that very well. The two categories were clear to me I think. Along with the w's. The explanation of the important steps of collecting data was very clear to me. How data is separated into two categories - categorical and quantitative, and just because it has a number, does not mean it is quantitative. Also, using the "W's" to determine what the data represents. The difference between categorical and quantitative data. The chat function is not as easy as it looks. Statistics are used every day. The media uses statistics to explain political associations. the different applications of statistics. the difference between categorical and quantitative data I liked your information on the graphs with category vs number and the identifiers. I thought the class was overall satisfactory, it's a new program so I'm alittle confused. The technical content, especially related to poling such as categorical and quantitative information. The M.E. of statistics. It is there to show that different polls of data will produce different results and percentages. Everything was clear, but the online set up was distracting. Different categories of types of data. The distinction between the quantity, identifier and categorical variables. Types of stats (categorical, etc.) What needs more explanation? N/A The types of Variables will take some practicing. You used some terminology like p-hat, which I wasn't familiar with and had to look up. I now know that it represents proportion. Our schedule. I think I got the first lecture coherently. Curious about ordinal variables. Interesting that they can be used as both qualitative or categorical nothing I think you had issues with seeing our responses on Blackboard Collaborate. Some of the information came a bit fast, and required re-reading the lesson material. Once it was re-read, there was no need for any additional explanation. 6

The use of all applicable software and areas we need to visit for specific assignments. Nothing so far. I would like to see more statistical applications in our everyday life, so that I may get a better grasp on the use of Statistics. The examples that were discussed in this last lecture really clarified a lot for me. But I want more! I think that the margin of error, proportions, and samples lingo of statistics could be explained better just because it is confusing to me. I'm confused what out "homework" is. Do we have online homework? I'll look at the syllabus again and see. chat I got a little confused on how to determine what kind of variable a quantity is. You could have gone over the variables a little more, but not too bad. How to use the different functions on the classroom interface. Nothing so far What grade would you give the last lecture? A % B % B % C % C % D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0% Why did you give this grade? The technical content was fine, but the online tech. usage was a bit sketchy. If we can work out the chat system, it would be a fairly decent class system. The only reason I didn't give an A was the technical difficulties. We all need our "chat permissions" turned ON in order to chat. Otherwise it sends a private message to you, but apparently you weren't getting any of mine that way either. Also, explaining some of the shorthand annotations could have made it a little easier to understand. Do to the inability of the majority of the students to be able to chat with the professor during the class. because it's a new program and hard to hear your lecture. Enjoyed the lecture. Found it interesting and explanations were clear. great first day, glad u went really slow, but the technology is still a lil difficult Clear understanding of the beginning material. Because the online format was distracting. No questions I had were left unanswered. I learned more in this first class, than I have learned in all of my physical classes so far this year. Because there were a lot of technical details that need to be ironed out to provide a smoother class period. Everything was understood. 7

There were some technical difficulties, but I do understand that it was the first class. I think the lecture went very well and I really enjoy how you teach. Was great except for chat difficulties You made sure to go slow and make everything clear even though we were having problems with the chat. The lecture and notes were good, but there were some technical difficulties the need worked out before any graded responses. Due to technical difficulties. The technical difficulties did become a bit of a distraction, plus we weren't able to participate fully. The material seemed just a little choppy from this. I was a little bit confused with everything in general just because the online will take a class or two to adjust to. i thought everything was very clear about the lecture. How could I have improved the last class? Iron out the bugs in the Blackboard Collaborate. Give some examples or request that the students take a moment to give you some examples. Give all the students chat permissions so that way we can respond and ask questions. testing it out more before class began The technology could be better understood by everybody in the aspect of how to use it. The lecture overall went well i believe. Sometimes you went fast and I would have to play back the recording but it is ok. For some reason our chat privileges got cut off in the middle of the class, so there was no way to continue to answer questions. but I think that is the program's fault, not something Prof. Leon did. Figure out how to view our responses. Talking more about our schedule, what our homework consists of, etc... Resolve any technical problems. i can't write in the chat which is a major problem. answer your phone or on the chat It was nothing you did but the chatting problems caused for some wasted time. Like the last question, pretty much the only thing was explaining the annotations or at least writing out some of the shorthand since maybe not everyone knew what they meant. Figure chat out Still some challenges with all the technology. Fix the messaging issues. The chat. I could not see anyone response towards the end. Although I know that's not your fault and you're working on it! i say just explaining the identifiers and the other variables a little more. IT support would have needed to be on hand to fix improve the last class. The course content needed no improvement. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Please improve the tech issues. How was the sound quality in this last class? The sound quality was good. the sound was very good, i understood everything 8

Sound quality was ok. I had to turn the volume all the way up on my computer, so I think you could use to be a little louder maybe. I was still able to clearly hear you and understand you though so that is ok also. The sound quality has been fairly decent. Thumbs-up. it was poor but im getting speakers The sound quality was adequate. There were a few times where is was muffled and only a couple of times did the sound become offset with your video (giving you a little bit of a chipmunk voice for a few seconds). The sound quality was good. good. Good. Could be a bit louder. Sound was fine. I could hear and see you just fine, but I do not think that the Talk feature worked on my end. It was superior. I have no complaints! Great. great Great very good, no problems Good. I could hear everything clearly. 9

August 30 Attempts 17 (Total of 18 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? Nothing, really. It was all very confusing, I didn't learn anything because the online format is so buggy. Statistics are very visual. There is a variety in they way stats can be displyed. The visual orientation of the stats can be both productive and counter-productive (cp). They can be CP if the audience is not aware of exactly what they are looking at. It was great to be able to go back on your lectures and see recordings that allowed for everything to be clear. I've really enjoyed how you make sure we know what's going on and go at a good pace. The waters were a bit muddled in the last class. It became a little confusing, because of several different elements. The stop and go, the data information used for examples is really hard to keep up with when we are interrupted. How to take information from different charts and use it in different ways. The placement of different categories of information in different charts depending upon what you are trying to convey. bar charts The frequency table. The perentages and relative frequencies and how to recognize them in charts. how to create a chart. The examples. The different kinds of charts and tables It seems that there are different charts or graphs to use which better suit the data. Determining which visual aid to use that best displays the many different types of data, essentially illustrating the data, is an important part of statistics. All of it. I had a hard time following the last lecture, but I learned about about quantize and categorical variables. The different types of charts all made sense to me. The purpose of using a bar graph rather than a pie chart What needs more explanation? I would like to really go over the last class again, but from I was able to comprehend it made sense. stats lol I feel as if you tend to cover more numbers and examples and less of the definitions and terminology. I need more info about independancy. Hoping the homework assignment will help with that. A summary of Chapter 3 would be nice. I got a nice overview of everything since it was nicely explained in the notes but, unfortunately, I didn't feel like I got enough small details because it was difficult to hear. All the symbols for variables and p hat and stuff like that. what are all those symbols? Some of the concepts 10

I am not very sure why there is such a variety in the charts and tables. Is there an objective mechanism in place to determine why you would choose one method over another, or is it just based on the subjective effort of the author? Maybe spend more time explaining what some of the terms mean. I've never heard a lot of them before. Everything. I don't know what we're talking about in class. Right now I can only learn from the book. Idk because I had technical difficulties after the frequency table and there was no sound. The segmented bar graphs i thought needed more explanation. They seemed hard to understand and read to me. Nothing... this section was easy Everything in this lecture was well explained. the relevancy of the data. Top hat needs more explanation in my opinion. Your class has been going great but still not sure about top hat. What grade would you give the last lecture? A % B % B % C % C % D 0% F 5.882% Unanswered 0% Why did you give this grade? A lot of things were barely touched on and unclear, but this could be due to the audio problems. The technical difficulties are still distracting. Because the chat function still did not work and the sound quality was very poor. The entire lecture sounded like it was given under water. Good, but not perfect For the part of the lecture that I was able to hear, the sound quality was not very good. There was a lot of background noise echoes and I could hardly hear what you were saying. The sound was a bit muffled. I felt confused about some explanations because I couldn't understand your words as much this time. While the audio and chat were still issues, the slides seemed to jump and skip a bit and the aforementioned comment about content coverage. This "C" is only for effort. The audio was terrible and difficult to understand and keep up. The rhythm of the lecture was not able to keep my focus. it was alot more thorough and well prepared Because I couldn't understand anything. It was an ok lecture but the technical problems made it difficult to follow and it makes me worry that i haven't learned all the things, but i'm not sure. It was hard to hear and I was slightly confused due to this. 11

Everything was well explained Your lectures have been awesome. You have gotten across the important factors we need to learn while keeping it entertaining and not boring. My video and audio feed kept stalling very badly so sometimes i think i missed part of what you were saying. As I was sitting in the room it was easy to understand and comprehend the information given. I would give the lecture an A. But the technology interfered with the lecture to the point of making some of it incomprehensible. But the blame for that falls on poor network infrastructure, not you the instructor. If I had to rate the technology I would give it a C. How could I have improved the last class? go over more of how to read harder graphs and charts maybe. By fixing the technological problems. Fix the chat funtion speak clearer or maybe have subtitles Once the sound is figured out it should be fine! Any downsides of the last class were out of your control. Nothing. Give a summary of the objectives to accomplish at the beginning of each class for that class session. Perhaps some key elements to be sure to focus on and to think of examples to ask about. Perhaps give out before the session begins on Bb. Spent more time on phrases and terms specific to Statistics. Really you haven't done anything wrong. Your lectures have been smooth and are going great. If we could get the technical issues fixed, it would be great. Remove the technical barrier. Speak a little more clearly. Just the chat and the sound A bit deeper explanation into why naming of the data is important. Spend a little more time explaining some of the terms and their definitions. Better microphone? The chat function will definately help because we can ask questions. How was the sound quality in this last class? The sound has been great so far this year. No problems so far. I had trouble hearing what you were saying for the most part of the class. Even though I had my volume maxed out. It was good, just the delay from the audio made it hard. A bit muffled. And with not being able to watch your mouth because of the video delay, I felt like I missed some of your words The sound quality was worse than the first class. It was very muffled and difficult to understand. It hendered learning the subject. In and out. not so great Good make the sound clearer and much louder. I had my volume settings all the way to the the highest setting and with my headphones on could still barely hear. Very difficult to understand 12

the lecture. The voice is fine and the accent is clear, but the microphone sound is bad. And the microphone is too far away from Dr Leon. It needs to be 80% louder than it is. Not good for the part of the lecture I could hear. A bit quite at first, but improved near the end. It was great! Poor, but improved after you got our comments through Chad. Muffled. Pretty bad. Made it hard to understand what was going on. Poor very poor 13

September 4 Attempts 17 (Total of 17 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you? The setup of the histogram and when to use it versus using the stem and leaf graph. The types of graphs are easy to understand. The uses of the different types of graphs. I understood the advantages of using different types of graphs. the difference between a histograph and a bar chart, how to find the median the historgrams and the stem and leaf graphs were very clear to me THe dynamics of a histogram (shape, humps, mode, symmetry, etc.) I really understood the data with the leaf plots. Stem and leaf plots. The uses for the graphs and the stem-leaf plot. the topics covered. Everything was fairly clear. sound quality All of it was clear. Stats are great! The concept of the bin size and the concept of median. Everything, but the examples mostly. the graphs Honestly sir, I had a hard time with this one due to the fact that I have been put on the night shift for work and had to use the recording of your lecture and it did not fully cooperate. What needs more explanation? bar graphs when is the first test, and where is there homework each week??? I understood really everything during the lecture, so no need for more explanation. N/A stem and leaf and how it is usefull how to find the IQR The stories are confusing me that I think we may be required to read and report on? When are they due? And what exactly are we supposed to do for them? For some reason my chat wasn't working at the end of the class today. Otherwise I would have asked! Which charts to use when. The JMP stuff could be explained a little more, but I am sure you will be going over that at a later time. How to read certain graphs or data. Everything was explained clearly How to use JMP and the other programs for this class. Nothing really. I will go back on a friends computer and try and pull it up because I only got bits a pieces of your lecture. Nothing The usefulness of either or. Perhaps some of the data escapes a bit. By the time I get a grasped of the data displayed, then we are moving on. It is not too bad though. A part of it is the technical difficulties, but we seem to be improving strongly in that. example of the quartiles. 14

September 6 Name Stat 201 Generic Survey Attempts 17 (Total of 17 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? that you can explain the spread with 3 things, the range, the IQR, or standard deviation The difference between mean, median, and mode. How to calculate a standard deviation was pretty clear. I understood the majority of the last lecture. I was not able to attend this lecture. How to summarize distributions of quantitative variables numerically. A considerable amount. I really have a good grasp of quartiles, median and mean now. How to use the averages of the first and third quartiles to find the standard mean. solid class, i could understand and interact with you All of it Everything was pretty clear...the sound and everything. Was great. The difference between types of plots. standard deviation When you were going over the mean and median for problems. I felt like at the beginning you really made sure we knew what we were getting into. You took time to make sure we understood it all and that way it made the rest of the class a little easier to follow. The problem for how to setup and deal with variances. Everything was clear. Thank you for going over the tree and leaf issue again, and the quartiles. They are also now clear. Nothing was very clear because I wasn't sure what we were talking about. What needs more explanation? Nothing too much. Maybe make sure we understand all the formulas that we have gone over just to be sure we have them down. Other than that great job so far! I was not able to attend this lecture. What are the main points that we need to get out of each section? How to read the data representation in JMP models Some of the standard deviation information toward the end of the class lost me a bit. Maybe more on the Q1 and Q3 What I didn't understand I was able to figure out on my own..but it was only a minor question that was easily resolved by re-reading chapter 3. how to determine larger standard deviation by just looking at graphs need more practice finding the standard deviation I am not sure at this point. The HW seems to be straightforward. Nothing. Honestly, nothing at all. When you use the different plots needs a bit more explanation. Everything was clear discuss more of the charts and what's missing the jmp program The IQR and outlier topics are confusing to me. 15

What grade would you give the last lecture? A % B % B % C % C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0% Why did you give this grade? You were spot on and held a good pace. We had some questions and felt engaged. No technical issues. I would have been an "A" had it not been for the last bit with JMP and some of my confusion with the data. We made excellent progress through the material, now that the technical issues are worked out. I look forward to the rest of the semester's lectures. Good class, good sound, some data was given too quickly. The visual and audio was much better this class. I thought the lecture was very understanding. it was a great and clear lecture, did great at explaining things in detail, and keep the alien avatar on hahaha. Everything was top notch. No technical issues or anything. Because there were no technical issues but there were still a few times whenever something was being explained and I got confused within the explanation. because it was the best class we've had yet Most everything was clear and the technology worked great. Easy to understand, asked us questions which got us engaged on the WORKING chat...hooray! we were able to ask questions and get answers this time so I was able to get clarification on anything I wasn't clear about The technical glitches were all corrected and it was a very responsive lecture. Unfortunately I am still having to do the recordings due to work but that should only be one more class period. About half way through the recording it stopped working for me. Other than that I thought it was great that is the only reason why I gave it the score I did. Based on input from my classmates. Because it was an unhelpful lecture. The technical difficulties are almost all gone, and we are now able to cover more material. The fact that we can all chat, and read them really helps. How could I have improved the last class? Make clearer drawings when writing on Powerpoint slides. N/A I was not able to attend this lecture. 16

Continue asking us questions...i like being engaged. I really liked the shark in my opinion. not go off topic soo much You had a good pace up until the end and then it felt a bit rushed. It takes a moment for me to register what the data is that is displayed and until that has been done it is difficult for me to grasp the Stat concept being taught. Not spend so much time on elementary topics like mean, median, and mode. No improvments needed! ask more questions Maybe instead of being a shark you could be a lion or bear! But seriously there was not much you did wrong. I really enjoy your lectures online. They give me the chance to do them on my own time. Thanks! Loved it, no complaints!! Nothing. It is now working very well, technically, and the content and explanations are excellent. You sometimes get sidetracked and you will talk over a topic and cover certain points, but then leave some points out and I get lost in the explanation of the process and then get confused. Being more structured and clear in how you present the material. can't think of anything, it was a good lecture Go a little slower on the explanations. How was the sound quality in this last class? The sound quality was extremely better than the last class. Good, but could be louder. Great! I was not able to attend this lecture. ok Best sound so far and I would be estatic for that quality in the future. very good, and I liked the avatars Excellent. The sound quality was excellent. I could hear you great and had no technical difficulties. Very Good. purrfect Superior! It was very good, I understand everything that you said during the lecture. Very good. very clear 17

September 11 Attempts 19 (Total of 19 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? bar graphs Using standard deviation to find the averages of change in costs for the next unit Everything What to look for in the graph. How to calculate IQR The interquartile range and how it is used to make box plots. I couldn't tell you The clarification of standard deviation from the last class. the IQR and boxplots. The material covered. Standard deviation is a measure of spread. You have been clear this entire time. You do a great job making sure we get what we need to know from lecture. From the ones I have been able to attend live they have been fantastic. I only seem to have problems with the recordings when I need to go back and watch them due to work. This should be the last time I am unable to attend the live lecture. Thanks for being understanding of our situations and allowing us to work with you even though it is an online class. That's a really cool aspect of class. How to find the IQR and Q3 and Q1. The real-world way stats are used Standard deviation is more clear. Can measure spread with IQR, range or SD I was not able to watch the last lecture because on blackboard collaborate, it will not pull up the recording. It says that it cannot find the recording. So I am still filling out this survey, but I tried to watch the class and I could not. I am curious as to how our tests our going to be different from other people's test who are actually taking statistics in a classroom setting. How will they know to give us a test that has less material on? All topics were clear How to find the fence and whiskers. I was out sick and could not attend this lecture. What needs more explanation? Nothing, really. The fences confused me but I'm going to read chap 5 and see if that helps as well...also my building had a fire drill so I missed 30 min of class unfortunately. Fences and how to find them. I only got through about half the recording before it froze up and then came up error so I will have to go back before the test on my own time and re-watch the remainder of the lecture. N/A The whiskers concept left me a just a bit confused. I was close to fully grasping it. I wish I could tell you Standard deviation and SD equation. Also info about the test. Nothing from last class. I understand it, anything I may have had questions about were resolved by reading chapter 5. 18

nothing A bit more into the way outliers affect the boxplots How to add on to the IQR, such as the fence example that we went over. no questions this time Since I was not able to watch the lecture, I cannot answer this question. Nothing. The only part i got lost about was is it always 1.5 when multiplying to find the fences. I was out sick and could not attend this lecture. What grade would you give the last lecture? A % B % B % C+ 0% C 5.263% D 0% F 5.263% Unanswered 0% Why did you give this grade? Materials were well explained. You did a good job explaining everything and taking the extra time on topics that needed further discussion. The class notes did not show up in the video. I was only able to hear the audio, no visual aids were available. I gave this grade based upon the communications I have received from you regarding the technical upgrades. The tech. problems were the only reason for previous lower grades. going well, thanks for taking the time to answer questions and explain what we didn't understand Because for my circumstances the lecture did not exist. Simply because I could not finish the lecture due to technical difficulties. Everything was clear and organized very understanding It was very clear and understand but their was a vague point about the multiplying for the finding of the fences. It was an informative class. It solidified some previous teachings and built upon new concepts as well. Technological issues are minimal and I could read your formulas better when you drew them on Powerpoint. it's average so I chose it Everything was fine. No glitches in the video or anything. Excellent explanations, and succinctly laid out. Because my expectations were meant. Just a bit confused about the fences. 19

Because it was clearer than the other ones, I learned more. Everything was clear and well taught. How could I have improved the last class? Explain your math and how you are getting all the numbers when adding on to the IQR. I am sure you did fine on the lecture, but again because I was not able to view the lecture I cannot answer this. Honestly sir, you are doing nothing wrong. Great class so far, just wish I was able to get all the recording. Should not be a problem for the remainder of the semester. Going slower on everything. Keep up the good work :) I guess explain the fences in a brief overview. Pause before moving to the next topic or data set. Sometimes they tend to run together and I have to backtrack a little to realize where you are at. i'm not sure, i was sick and couldnt concentrate on the online class Could not be improved Check recordings. No improvements needed. It was great, no improvement needed. A few sound issues, but nothing major. not spend soo much time going over the entire lecture from last time Fix the skipping in the powerpoint slides. Think we are ready to try break out groups or JMP. It helps me to work the data out myself, I then understand it better no suggestions I thought every class has been a good lecture and just maybe more detail about some things. I was out sick and could not attend this lecture. How was the sound quality in this last class? Great Unable to watch the class so unable to answer. excellent For the most part very good. Very good. I could hear perfectly. Excellent. The sound quality was excellent. Very Good pretty good very good, only lost the sound once I think Great. When will more homework be put on the course compass website? Good! Fine. It got weird towards the end but you fixed it so it was good. Very good. It was very good. it was some dank quality 20

From what I got of lecture the sound quality was great. I was out sick and could not attend this lecture. 21

September 13 Attempts 18 (Total of 18 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? I appreciated the information on how you use the information on the surveys and your scores over the past few classes. It was interesting to me that as the technology got better, so did your grades. It really made me take them more seriously. Everything The beginning of Chapter 5. how to make a box plot and the z score The Z scores. I think you did a great job going over the different graphs and plots such as timeplots and explaining how to interpret the information given. You explained the pros and cons of each which was nice so we know when it is best to use which. You make sure we know what you are talking about and encourage questions. Difference b/w whiskers and IQR i felt i understood how to find the IQR better and how to find the ranges. sorry couldn't make it The clearest was the portion discussing the outliers with the Guiness World Record holders. Box plot explanation The methods to analyse the distributions. Once you explained the box plots again, that was very clear to me. I think I understand box plots much better than I have before. I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. How to form box plots. Fences make more sense! JMP How to lay out a timeplot What needs more explanation? I would like to go over the z score again, if at all possible. Everything. The teaching style is too fast paced and not concise/disorganized. By watching the videos with this chapter nothing further needed explanation. The overall idea of the z-scores makes sense. I personally just need a little more practice on it. The Test The last portion was a little fuzzy in regards to the z number. I had it initially and them more details seems to skew my thought process a bit. From the lectures up to this point, I think I am understanding things as good as possible. Nothing. I was still a little confused when you were going over the whiskers and fence stuff but I plan on going back over the lectures and making sure I understand it. the 1.5 i was at my brother's wedding Nothing really. Nothing no questions this time 22

I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. Z charts or whatever they were called. I can't remember. I understood everything. The only thing that I did not entirely understand was the concept of the Z score. What grade would you give the last lecture? A % B % B 5.556% C % C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0% Why did you give this grade? All was pretty clear. Plus I'm super pumped about the study sessions! Everything was explained well Because the lectures are not beneficial to me. Because I felt like you did a good job explaining everything, there weren't any difficulties, and I just felt pretty good about the class after the lecture. A lot of examples, but not enough material that contain specific details on how the test would be. It was very clear Everything was clear and all my questions were answered. You went over questions that needed to be answered and even had help there with you so that even if you missed something they would catch it. Everything was pretty clear and understandable. Good class, easy to understand. I base this grade upon the improvements of our previous sessions. You were entertaining, but also you gave good explanations. You also seemed to slow down just a bit on some of the tougher concepts. My expectations were met. Mostly everything was clear and well explained. because its average I felt everything was clearly understood. Because the class seemed repetitive. As your statistical anaylsis showed, each class session has become more and more organized and is becoming more predictable and efficient. I like that you always add a few little moments that are off topic that oes a few things... One, tells you who is paying attention, but the little break in the material, even if it is just you offering coffee, it allows for a little break and helps me to get more focused on the topic at hand. 23

How could I have improved the last class? I thought it was great and needed no improvements. I am not sure how you could have improved it. Go slower and more examples. Don't go through the slides so quickly. It was great. No improvement needed. It was a good class. No way. For some reason you did freeze a bit but I'm only writing that because I need something to fill in this box. It wasn't distracting really. No suggestions ask more questions Keep doing what you're doing. Spend less time on the same topics covered last week. A bit less time on questions from previous classes and more on the current topic. I think the last class was pretty good. Not much, but maybe spend a more even amount of time explaining everything rather than spending too much time on one thing only to spend less time on another. I got a little distracted by the different pictures this time, though not in other classes, so maybe that wasn't something to improve on. I always appreciate that you are able to communicate via chat even when you are talking to the class as a whole. You have done a good job of multitasking. I think it was pretty good as is. I liked that you had help with you in person so that he/she could catch mistakes and help answer questions. Makes class run smooth. I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. Not sure no suggestions this time How was the sound quality in this last class? Also great! Great! The sound quality was overall good. It would freeze up a little every once in a while but nothing too bad. Ok solid im sure Fine! great... heard everything well. Although, even when i have the volume up as high as it can go, i still wish it could get a little louder. very good it was very good Mostly okay, some lag time this past week. Good. great sound quality was excellent I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. The sound quality was excellent! Very good. 24

Very good. 25

September 18 Attempts 12 (Total of 14 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? everything Correlation. Not all of correlation is totally clear (which I will explain in the upcoming box), but I really enjoy looking at scatter plots and the idea that correlation shows it's linear strength is clear. It's hard to say, I was worrying about the test The z-score. To be honest, nothing was really clear to me. This is a very confusing topic for me and I just do not understand it. It wasn't your teaching style. That was fine. I have to re-watch this so I will understand it better. It was all very clear. normal must be symmetric and unimodal there are 3 ways to see if the data is normal, p value, histogram and normal plots What was clearest to me was the P-value and goodness of fit test. I have had to practice that through biology so it was nice to get a refresher on that technique. Z score How to generate a box plot. Everything. you're love of sushi What needs more explanation? Nothing. I had a few things that I personally still am not confident on. The 68,95,99.7 rule is still a little confusing to me. Not quite sure where to use those numbers all the time. I was also getting a little confused when you started plugging in information into your online calculator tool. I need to go back through lecture and figure out where you get that but I need to better understand what numbers go where and why. I couldn't really pay attention because I studied for the exam 68, 95, 99.7 rule N/A I thought the lecture was very clear. Nothing One thing that completely confuses me is the model. The percentages that go along with the normal model...completely confusing to me. It all made sense. Unfortunately, as much as I enjoy looking at scatter plot stuff, I don't fully understand correlation. I guess it's just hard to grasp because they can have a strong association but a small correlation. And the rules about it only being used for quantitative data and the "straight enough" rule and such just throws me a bit. need a little more explanation on the p value nothing 26

What grade would you give the last lecture? A 25% B % B 8.333% C % C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0% Why did you give this grade? because I could hear you fine and see you, but it was my fault that I didn't get the most out of the lecture couldn't focus because exam For being an online lecture you have provided clear lectures that are helpful and useful.there have only been a few hiccups along the way and most the time I understand everything you talk about. Because it was a complex topic and due to the test being given on the same day I was unable to attend the lecture. I'm sure my grade will reflect that. The lecture was understood and i got the whole lesson very well. felt a little rushed, maybe because it was right before the exam I felt that many of the audio and tech. issues were resolved. You also did an excellent job answering questions and were very engaging. My expectations were met. Because you are teaching wonderfully. Just because I don't understand the material doesn't mean your lecture deserves a bad grade. It would have gotten a better grade, but the audio had a slight complication that made it hard to hear you. because it was good I would have given an A, but having lecture the same day as exam, so not being able to watch lecture, made me give it a B+ I really like the notes for this lesson. They seemed nicely laid out and (maybe just because I enjoy looking at scatter plots) I really enjoyed reviewing them. How could I have improved the last class? impossible Nothing. No improvement necessary. It was fine. the timing. was hard due to test I think that last class was delivered very well. Given it last week. I think just maybe adding more examples. Please turn on your video camera for the next session. No way I can think of. 27

I felt like you went a tad fast in this lecture but maybe that was because we had a test that night. Other than that it was pretty good. make the chat scroll You just need to ask more questions pertaining to what will be on the test. It was different from the study guide How was the sound quality in this last class? Pretty good! I could hear you loud and clear. Above good. good very good. wonderful very good The sound quality was great for this class. No complications. the sound quality rocks The sound was very good. I can't decide between Alvin, Simon, or Theodore. Which chipmunk do you think best personifies you? Other than those couple of spurts, the audio was fine. Good. a little high pitched 28

September 20 Attempts 18 (Total of 18 attempts for this assessment) What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? Convergence The way scatter plots have linear lines. Everything Everything. I was in class so it was good. The analysis methods of the different distributions. It was all very clear. Thanks! scatterplots It was pretty straight forward. how to lay out a scatterplot. Knowing which goes in X and Y positions was very helpful. How to read scatter plots. I really thought you explained the way to deal with "cigar" scatter plots. You explained the finding G. There were a ton of new plots to learn and you did a good job for the most part explaining them in full. a scatterplot is used to display 2 quantitative variable at the same time the difference between a positive and a negative scatterplot the masks you wore were the highlights of class The correlation was pretty clear and how you classify /study scatterplots. Scatter plots. Everything about them was pretty clear. How to interpret scatter plots Most of what you said was clear in the last lecture..but I had a little trouble following you towards the end. It seemed jumbled together a bit, but the clearest was the beginning and introducing scatterplots. What needs more explanation? N/a As of right now, I feel like I'm getting it pretty good, so right now nothing. I felt everything was explained very well. what causes the shapes of a scatterplot to vary. I only get a little confused about z-scores. I need to review what they are. nothing Nothing, but I hope everything on the next exam is covered in the lectures. I was a little confused over the banana shaped scatter plots. You starting going into taking the square root of y and then squaring it to get a different answer. It was a little problem but I was still confused over it. How to standardize data. The church of the Jedi (Jedism). the z score is still a little confusing The last 5 minutes of the material that we covered. But I'm sure I can figure this out by reading the book. The last part about the correlation. Nothing 29
