An extremely brief under-length) essay which approaches the question indirectly, and does not address it satisfactorily by means of rigorous independent comparison. Attempts at introduction and conclusion are evident, but most of the introductory paragraph has been quoted verbatim from the abstract to Taylor s translation of the Protagoras without acknowledgement of any kind. A large part of the remainder of the essay consists of quotations, sometimes slightly modified, from Guthrie; some acknowledgement of this debt is indicated in the incomplete and incorrectly formatted footnotes, but the fact that nearly a quarter of the essay consists of quotations from Guthrie without specific acknowledgement i.e. in the form of quotation marks around the quoted material) seriously compromises your claim to authorship. The unacknowledged quotation from Taylor comprises another 5% of the essay. There is therefore a charge of plagiarism to be answered here. I have spoken to my tutor Professor XXXX about the matter and would firstly like to apologize for any inconvenience I have caused. I understand the severity of the matter and appreciate the opportunity to explain myself. I would like to say that although my piece of work is of minimal quality I did not in any way intend to pass off someone else's work as my own and after looking at the documents which you provided there are some points I would like to explain. The first example of plagiarism which was highlighted was in the first line and was the point about the philosopher-dramatist Plato. I fail to understand how this can be classed as plagiarism as it is a common fact that Plato was a philosopher and I therefore fail to see how such a point needed referencing. The other point that have been noted for plagiarism are as follows: footnote 6 footnote 8 footnote 10 footnote 11 footnote 12 footnote 13 footnote 14 The numbers I have provided are the footnote numbers for the passages which apparently contain plagiarism. Although I did not provide specific page numbers or organised the bibliography into primary and secondary sources, I have included both correct footnotes and a bibliography which are clearly stated and credit the correct sources. I will apologize on account of the obvious poor quality of my essay but I fail to see how my essay has included any form of plagiarism as I have included correct footnotes and references. I also should explain the poor quality of my work. When I returned after the Christmas holidays I was left with very limited time to complete the essay. My intentions was to complete the majority of the essay at home during the holidays but certain circumstances caused me to postpone my work on the essay. When I did return to University I had the added stress of the part time job which I currently hold and its demanding hours. I was also concerned with the upcoming exams, the last of which I have just finished on the 25th and may be another poor effort on account of this unfortunate incident arising. I understand that these reasons cannot be an excuse for the poor quality of my work and that I could have certainly done better but I still believe that I did not intentionally plagiarize any particular work and still defend my essay as correctly referenced.
