2 THE TWO CRITICAL OBSTACLES PREVENTING YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS WHAT STOPS PEOPLE FROM ACHIEVING THEIR DESIRES AND TAKING THEIR LIFE TO THE NEXT LEVEL? I have spent more than 30 years coaching tens of thousands of people around the globe on how to become their best versions and achieve their goals. From my experiences, I can tell you that apathy and fear are the biggest blockers to achieving your goals. Before we tackle how apathy and fear hold you back, let s flip to the positive and see the qualities you need to achieve your goals. Whenever you want to change an aspect of your life, you create two ends with a gap in the middle. On the left, you have results that you do not want (your current reality) and on the right, the results that you want (your desired reality). IF The gap in the middle of these ends is what I call The Land of If. Let s take a look at what IF means because it is a key aspect in understanding the requirements for achieving your goals. IF comprises of two elements, which if activated and strengthened will give you a better chance of getting the results you want. Without these two basics, you will only get more of what you don t desire. So, what are these elements?

3 THE TWO QUALITIES NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS The I in IF represents inspiration. When you are inspired, you can accomplish extraordinary things. Inspiration is an intrinsic drive that keeps you moving. It is passion on fire. It stirs your soul and stimulates your thinking. When you are inspired, you do what is expected of you without much effort. Any intervention to get you moving becomes unnecessary. You do it because it is what you want and not because someone forced you. When you are inspired, you keep taking the next step. Inspiration is paramount when it comes to setting and achieving your goals. The F represents faith. When you have faith, you have utter trust and confidence in yourself to achieve what it is you set out to accomplish. If we described faith in simple terms, it would be, having a positive expectation. Faith also encompasses having a firm belief. It is this unwavering belief that keeps you going regardless of the outcome. Often, when you set a goal that is beyond your comfort zone (a real goal should be), you are bound to meet obstacles. It is inevitable that you will meet difficulties that you never anticipated. At this time, faith is the only thing allowing you to continue your journey. When sharing the value of optimism, Martin Luther King Jr. stated that faith is moving that first step although you can t see the entire staircase. By studying the success stories of some of the people who ve achieved greatness, you will learn that they had faith and inspiration in abundance. Let s take Thomas Edison for instance. I know the story varies with the book you read, but he supposedly tried a thousand times before his breakthrough to invent the electric bulb. What do you imagine kept him going? The answer is simple, inspiration and faith.

4 YOU CANNOT MAKE IT THROUGH WITHOUT INSPIRATION AND FAITH Consider JK Rowling who rose against all the odds to write and have the Harry Potter series published. She was rejected 12 times before the book was accepted for publishing. Think about it; she experienced twelve times what must have been a crushing sense of defeat. It is no doubt that some publishers are kicking themselves hard for those rejections. But would she keep going without inspiration and faith? How about Henry Ford? The man went bankrupt five times before achieving his great success. Can you imagine how excruciating it is to go broke and lose all your life s work? You cannot make it through without inspiration and faith. Plenty of these success stories about entrepreneurs, world leaders, celebrated philanthropists and Nobel Peace Prize winners have been documented and shared widely. But, the bottom line remains that it takes inspiration and faith to get those much- desired results.

5 NAMING THE ENEMY At the beginning of the guide, I mentioned that apathy and fear are the hindrances to achieving your goals. APATHY Apathy is what stands at the rear end of inspiration. When you are apathetic, you feel unmotivated, uninspired, uninterested and lethargic. You are unable to drive yourself. FEAR On the other end of faith, you find fear. Simply put, fear is a negative expectation. Fear can manifest itself in the form of self-doubt, which causes you to hesitate, hold back, and play small. Failure to achieve your goals can be a result of fear or apathy. For instance, it s possible for someone to have faith but lack inspiration; you know you can write that book, but you can t seem to find that motivation to see it through. It is also possible to have inspiration but lack faith; the prospect of that new and fulfilling relationship is exciting, but each time you try to take action, you are overcome by the fear of rejection. It is apparent that having one without the other doesn t cut it. If we were to put these qualities on a scale, it would appear like this; Apathy Inspiration Fear Faith The closer you move up to a 10 in embodying inspiration and faith, the higher your chances of achieving your goals. There are only two obstacles between where you are and where you would like to be - fear and apathy.

6 ACTION TIME Pick the number one goal you would like to achieve in the next 90 days and scale it below. As you reflect on the goal, what number are you for inspiration and faith? My #1 Goal: Apathy Inspiration Fear Faith This is an excellent awareness exercise that helps you identify whatever is holding you back. Your goal is to nudge yourself closer to a 10 in these two essential qualities. When you do that, you improve your chances of success; you stack the odds in your favor.
