WELCOME TO FREEOK FreeOK has been busy! In lieu of a sponsored charity this year, we decided to use our outreach for the benefit of local communities as needed. We ve developed quite the bond with a few freethinking businesses and community organizers whose contributions are based on humanist efforts and less on dogmatic principle. On May 19th and 20th, localities in and surrounding the OKC metro area were hit by a devastating round of powerful tornadoes. We organized volunteer and resource drives to outlying areas and served breakfast to first responders in Moore. We helped orchestrate a fundraiser for Oklahoma Atheist Rebecca Vitsmun through the I m actually an atheist t-shirts, selling close to 1,000 across 20 different countries. Our accompanying Literacy Drive will help replenish books and school supplies to offset the needs of area schools that were impacted. After this year s event, we will be reforming FreeOK as an engine of humanitarian and community aid here in Oklahoma and focusing on building the freethinking community by supporting freethinking artists, businesses and educational entities in addition to holding our annual convention. You have inspired us to do more and we love that about you. We are excited to present such an exciting line-up for our first year in OKC! Be sure to stop by our sponsor and merch tables in the lobby, and check out the book signings this evening, followed by the after party here at the Cox Convention Center. And, as always, thank you for supporting FreeOK. 1
SCHEDULE freethought (fre THôt) n. - a philosophical viewpoint that holds opinions should be formed on the basis of logic, reason, and empiricism and not authority, tradition, or other dogmas. The cognitive application of freethought is known as "freethinking", and practitioners of freethought are known as "freethinkers." FreeOK is Oklahoma s annual freethought convention. It is designed to educate and unite freethinkers across the region for a day of comraderie and a lecture series from some of the most influential freethinkers of our age. Each presentation will last 45 minutes, with the exception of the keynote, Lawrence Krauss. There will be a 15 minute intermission between each presentation. We ask that attendees be seated promptly by the designated start time out of respect for each speaker. Concessions will be available immediately outside of the convention hall. 9:00 Jamila Bey Secular Journalism (video link) 10:00 *Sean Faircloth A Strategy for Secular Success 11:00 *Dale McGowan Raising ACTUAL Freethinkers * Book Signings 11:45-1:30 BREAK FOR LUNCH 1:30 Emily Boyer Secular Facts on Sexual Acts 2:30 Zack Kopplin Creationism in Education Legislature 3:30 *Seth Andrews Get Them While They re Young 4:30 *Lawrence Krauss The Higgs & the Story of Science 6:00 BOOK SIGNINGS 2

Faircloth has extensive experience in political organizing and lobbying at both the state and federal level. 3
SPEAKERS (cont d) Seth Andrews A former believer of 30 years (including a decade as a Christian radio host), Seth ultimately discovered that religion lacked any legitimate answers, especially in the bright light of scientific discovery. Instead of being satisfied with a belief system inherited from family and culture, Seth found greater satisfaction in thinking for himself, and he eventually encouraged others to do the same through an online community called The Thinking Atheist. He spoke at the inaugural FreeOK and FreeOK 2012 in Tulsa, OK and recently published a book titled Deconverted: A Journey from Religion to Reason. Jamila Bey Jamila Bey is a journalist based in Washington, DC, where she hosts the weekly radio show The Sex, Politics And Religion Hour: SPAR With Jamila which airs on AM 1390 in Washington and AM 1430 in New York City. She also writes for the Washington Post blog, She the People. Jamila served a decade-long stint as a producer and editor at National Public Radio working for shows including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Tell Me More with Michel Martin, and Talk of the Nation. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, The New Humanist of London, Jazz Times Magazine and WebMD as well as on The Today Show and radio stations around the country. A sought-after speaker and writer, Jamila s areas of expertise include health and family policy, and all issues concerning the First Amendment. She particularly enjoys reporting on issues concerning religion and the separation of church and state. A stand-up comedienne, Jamila says she enjoys the stage because it s a cheaper hobby than scrapbooking. Her first book about the role of religion in the lives of African-American women is to be completed in fall Zack Kopplin Zack Kopplin is a science advocate from Louisiana. He s been fighting Louisiana s creationism law with the support of 78 Nobel laureates and has exposed hundreds of schools in voucher programs that teach creationism. His work has been covered nationally including on MSNBC and internationally in the Guardian and Vogue. 4
SPEAKERS (cont d) Dale McGowan Dale McGowan is co-author of Parenting Beyond Belief and Raising Freethinkers, and author of Atheism for Dummies. He teaches nonreligious parenting workshops across North America and is founding executive director of Foundation Beyond Belief, a humanist charitable organization. In 2008, Dale was named Harvard Humanist of the Year. He lives near Atlanta with his wife Becca and their three children. Lawrence Krauss Lawrence Maxwell Krauss is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist who is a professor of physics, Foundation Professor of the School of Earth and Space Exploration, and director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe from Nothing. He is an advocate of scientific skepticism, science education, and the science of morality. Krauss is one of the few living physicists referred to by Scientific American as a public intellectual, and he is the only physicist to have received awards from all three major U.S. physics societies: the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the American Institute of Physics. In 2012 he was awarded the National Science Board s Public Service Medal for his contributions to public education in science and engineering in the US. He regularly writes for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, has a column in Slate, and appears regularly on both television and radio. In addition, he is the subject of an upcoming full length feature film documentary, along with Richard Dawkins. 5
SPONSORS Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a nonpartisan educational organization dedicated to preserving the constitutional principle of church-state separation as the only way to ensure religious freedom for all Americans. In September 2013, AU will reprise this important event with a great series of concerts and performances in cities throughout the U.S. au.org voicesunitedconcerts.com The American Humanist Association is a national organization advocating for progressive values and equality for humanists, atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers. This is being accomplished through defense of civil liberties and secular governance, by outreach to the growing number of people without traditional religious faith, and through a continued refinement and advancement of the humanist worldview. AHA recently donated $10,000 to the Rebecca Vitsmun Recovery Fund as well as setting up a fund through Humanist Charities for Oklahoma Tornado Relief. americanhumanist.org humanistcharities.org In the middle of the Bible Belt there exists a community of individuals who strive to normalize atheism.
