Standing in the gap against mental illness Living with mental illness can be hard, especially if you are supporting the person going through it. It can often feel helpless and hopeless. But there is hope. things you may not have known about Adventist Record There's been some fishy business going on at Adventist Record recently. And remember... 5 Wahroonga Adventist School celebrates new state-of-the-art facilities By Tracey Bridcutt - April 26, 2017 Alessandra and Sophia Price in their new classroom. Photo: Theodora Amuimuia. Children don t usually look forward to returning to school after the holidays, but the students at Wahroonga Adventist School (NSW) were all smiles on their first day back for Term 2. The students returned on Monday from their Easter holiday break to the excitement of moving into all new classrooms and other facilities in the school s new multi-storey building. The building features state-of-the art facilities, including a science lab, music room, art studio and a food technology room. Floor to ceiling windows provide plenty of natural light while also offering superb views of the surrounding neighbourhood.

New state-of-the-art facilities. The opening of the new building has also enabled all the children to be on the one site again, with the junior and prep students relocating from the old campus. Principal Michelle Streatfeild said the children and staff had been really looking forward to moving into the new building. It has been really great for the big kids and the little kids to be together again, she said. The facilities are fantastic. Mrs Streatfeild said the school has doubled in size in the past two years. We are enrolling two years ahead, she said. We have had a lot of enquiries in the past week when people have seen activity happening (in the new building). Work will now begin on another multi-storey building, which, when completed, will house the junior school.

The 112-year-old school currently offers classes for Prep to Year 8 and by 2021 will cater for students up to and including Year 12. 9 Sydney Adventist Hospital nurses in the spotlight for Anzac Day By Record Staff - April 25, 2017 San nurses Hannah Muggeridge and Linda Thomson Mangnall during the service at the Wahroonga Cenotaph. (Photo: Melanie Windus) Two nurses from the Sydney Adventist Hospital were in the national spotlight this morning featuring at an Anzac Day service followed by an interview on the Channel 9 Today show. Clinical nursing unit manager Linda Thomson Mangnall and student nurse Hannah Muggeridge were dressed in World War I nurses uniforms as part of a special tribute to World War I nurses at the Anzac service at Wahroonga (NSW). The two nurses led the Wahroonga Pathfinder Club in the official march to the Cenotaph where the service was held.

Hundreds of people attended the Anzac service. (Photo: Melanie Windus) I hope when people see the tunics and veils at the Anzac Day service they will remember that while the Diggers made amazing sacrifices for us... so did the nurses who were with them every step of the way, Ms Thomson Mangnall told the Hornsby Advocate. The bravery of our nursing forebears supporting our soldiers is an integral part of who we are as Australians. During the Today interview, conducted by Sonya Kruger and Richard Wilkins, Ms Thomson Mangnall and Ms Muggeridge talked about the role of nurses during World War I and the challenges they faced doing their job.

NZPUC ministers explore creative mission in Europe By Victor Hulbert - April 26, 2017 Dr Daniel Duda (left) who hosted the morning, pictured here introducing Pastor Victor Kulakov and other members of the group. (Photo: Victor Hulbert) A team of pastors from the New Zealand Pacific Union Conference (NZPUC) visited with Trans-European Division (TED) staff in London on April 11 with the aim of gaining an insight into how mission can be achieved within secularised and diverse cultures. Led by NZPUC Discipleship Ministries leader, Pastor Victor Kulakov, the group specifically chose to visit the TED territory because, both in New Zealand itself and in the islands that make up the NZPUC territory, they see themselves facing similar issues. During an intense morning of presentation and discussion, Dr Daniel Duda, TED Education and Adventist Mission director, highlighted the challenges to sharing the Gospel that are faced by the 11 Unions and 3 attached fields within the TED whether in highly secularised countries like the Netherlands and Finland or more religiously mono-cultural countries like Greece, Poland or Serbia where, despite a monopoly religion, secularism is making serious inroads.

While 19th century methods are still having some success in a few areas, we have to be innovative and change our mindset in order to reach out to people groups who have radically changed their world-view, either post-communism or post-christianity, Dr Duda said. Health Ministries director for NZPUC, Dr Adrielle Carrasco, found the debate refreshing. It was such a blessing, and some great learnings and good challenges for us, she said. Kulakov expressed appreciation for a clear understanding of strategy and objectives. Dr Adrielle Carrasco (right) found some great learnings and good challenges. (Photo: Victor Hulbert) Part of that learning was a review of some of the success stories and mission experiments that have taken place in the TED over the past 12 months. TED Communication director, Victor Hulbert, took the group on a whirlwind virtual tour of a variety of projects including Messy Church success in Croatia and Greece, a pizza church linked closely to an Adventist school and church in Finland, health clubs in south-eastern Europe, a motorbike club, and creative youth and Pathfinder initiatives. One word that came across very strongly was compassion. In relation to initiatives focused on the European refugee/migrant situation as well as other forms of outreach, Hulbert noted how genuine compassion makes a significant difference in people s lives. He also emphasised that while the Church is good at developing and running its own programs, being outward-looking and seeing what the world is actually looking at may help us develop initiatives that touch more lives. As examples he showed how the Church in the UK was highlighted for the work it

did around the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WWI and the stories of courageous Adventist conscientious objectors. More recently, Adventists in Hungary and Poland (among other places) were able to make significant community impacts by focusing on the Desmond Doss story during the release of the Hacksaw Ridge film. TED Stewardship director and former Irish Mission president, David Neal, highlighted how a mix of traditional and creative evangelism in association with Mark Finley worked in Dublin during a twoyear Mission to the Cities outreach. He emphasised how the Cuisle centre of influence in the front hall of the Dublin Ranelagh Church drew in a whole new group of Irish people. Passionate as always, Pastor David Neal enthuses on how Total Member Involvement enhanced Mission to the Cities in Dublin. (Photo: Victor Hulbert) The fourth presenter was Patrick Johnson, TED Ministerial Association secretary. He took the group on a different journey, showing how good mentoring and discipleship can not only benefit the pastor and his family, but will ultimately help the Church grow as a positive discipleship track leads to a significant improvement not only in building relationships, but in an increased and natural process of Total Member Involvement. Following an evening debriefing, Kulakov expressed his gratitude for the time together, noting strong similarities in thinking and direction between TED and the South Pacific Division. We truly praise God, he concluded. We have been hugely blessed and learnt a number of very valuable things that we have committed to apply/try in our ministry.

Following their visit to the TED offices, the group from NZPUC also made stops in Amsterdam, Denmark and Orlando (Florida) as part of their trip. A discussion on how contemporary culture had changed since the 1962 TED 3 angels sculpture was unveiled led to insistence on an outdoor group photo. 18 Run with endurance By Margaret Mielczarek - April 28, 2017 (Photo: istock) The faster you get to the finish line, the faster you can stop moving! With other athletes heaving and spewing up their entire stomach contents around me as we collectively shuffled forward, trying to get to that glorious finish line these were the thoughts running through my head during the marathon portion of Ironman Cairns last year. Never before during an ironman had I contemplated pulling out of a race like I did that day. Never once during a race had I thought, That s it! I m taking up knitting. I was hurting. My feet were blistered and burning. I d had enough and just wanted it all to end. But there was no way I was giving up. No way! An iron distance triathlon consists of a 3.8km open water swim, a 180km cycle and a 42.2km run because running a marathon isn t hard enough, right? It s one of the most gruelling one-day sporting events on the planet. It challenges you to your very core. It requires tenacity, perseverance, consistency, a little bit of crazy and a level of sacrifice most people don t understand. To complete an ironman requires a fighting spirit and a never-give-up attitude. But when you come across that finish line to the words You. Are. An. IRONMAN! it s worth it.

I first started competing in triathlons about six years ago. I have always been a runner so I thought triathlons would be something fun to do. I bought a bike during the Boxing Day sales one year and started training. Fast forward six years and I ve now competed in countless events ranging from sprint and Olympic distance triathlons to half and full iron distance events. I have completed four ironman events so far, and am currently in training for ironman number five. That s a lot of training and a lot of Sorry, I can t. I have to be up at 5am tomorrow. Because, you know, training! From the outside, the sacrifice and the huge amount of time spent in training might seem bizarre and ridiculous Why would you do that? It s a road not many people choose to travel. But here s what I ve learnt on my journey so far. It s a bit like our Christian faith and waiting for the second coming. Let us run this race with endurance that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1,2). 1. Run To run requires effort. It s impossible to train for and to finish a marathon or an ironman without daily effort and determination, and without a laser-sharp focus on the goal of crossing that finishing line. Effort is also required to run the race of faith to stay motivated and focused on the ultimate prize, especially in a time when it would be much easier to give up the fight and follow the crowd. So get up and run! Run with energy towards the ultimate prize Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it (1 Corinthians 9:24). 2. Race Athletes typically compete against each other in a race, and at the end, there is only one winner one athlete who gets to stand on that coveted top spot on the podium. The difference between this and an endurance event like a marathon or ironman, particularly for the mid-to-back-end age-group athletes, is that the race is not so much about racing others as it is about racing against

yourself against your own mind and thoughts. Buy into the negative thoughts that creep in and the race is over. Learn to overcome them and you will get to that finish line. In a similar way, the race of faith is an individual journey, and ultimately you are racing against yourself your own mind, thoughts and temptations. It s easy to buy into the negativity and to stop. The easy way out is to quit. But when negativity starts to sneak in, and it will and when all you want to do is to give up remember, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). So stay strong. Don t quit. Don t stop. Because that finish line is just around the corner. 3. Endurance Endurance demands persistence and perseverance. It requires mental and physical strength it s not easy to keep going when your body and mind are screaming Stop! You have to be prepared to be in it for the long haul it s not a sprint! Endurance also requires consistency. You have to be consistent in daily training because it s impossible to complete an endurance event like an ironman without training. That s the thing about this sport if you don t do the training don t expect to get to the finish line (and let s be honest, you ll only have yourself to blame). In an ironman you also have to be consistent during the race you have to pace yourself and to focus on your own race rather than getting distracted by what other competitors might be doing. The race of faith is similar in that to reach the end you have to be prepared to be in it for the long haul it s not a sprint. You have to be persistent and you have to persevere. This requires daily training prayer, worship and meditation on the Word. Knowing why you started (why you first believed) and focusing on your goal and the prize ahead will help you to

maintain focus and perseverance even when everyone else around you doubts. Margaret with one of her ironman medals. Is it easy waiting for the second coming? Is it easy to believe in something this world constantly doubts and mocks? Is it easy to be the odd one out? Is it easy to make the sacrifices required to stay true and faithful? Believe me, I know how hard it can be. It s much easier to stop believing, to follow the world and to give into temptation but at what cost? We are so close to that finish line. Don t stop! Don t give up! Because when all is said and done it will be worth it. Margaret Mielczarek is writer and deputy editor at Australian Triathlete Magazine. 22 Standing in the gap against mental illness By Jarrod Stackelroth - April 28, 2017 (Photo: Pexels) This is not how I planned to write this editorial. I planned to remind you of the devastating impact mental health issues have on our community, even within our Church. I was going to share some stats, like how one in four Australians suffer from a mental health problem.* Then I was going to share some tips on how to live with and support someone struggling with these issues. Maybe I ll finish that article some day. But it feels right to do it this way. This story is my heart s cry. My wife suffered severe ongoing abuse as a child. It left her with scars scars that are not always visible to the curious eye but to one who has known her, they are there under the surface, marking her soul, blistering her skin, bleeding internally. As one who loves her, who is one with her, her scars become my scars. They are left to me to heal, to bind up: to comfort her and hold her as she cries, to bear the brunt of her anger when the pain gets too much for her to contain or suppress. I am not complaining. She has endured and experienced far more pain than I ever will. And so I endure. For her, for myself, for our marriage, a rock battered by the storms of life, strong in the tempests of travail.

I realise how hard it can be to support someone who suffers from a mental illness, whatever the cause. I ve felt the loneliness, the shared despair, the irrational fights and the internal conflict to hold onto control, to carry the burden of someone who is struggling to carry themselves. It is an isolating existence. You feel a duty not to damage or dishearten the sufferer any further. Often, you don t even realise they are in another season of difficulty how long they ve been struggling and how tough it has been until they crack. You respect their wishes so you don t share their affliction with anyone. You try to carry it yourself until it becomes too heavy to bear. If you find yourself on a journey like this, with a loved one suffering from mental illness, make sure you look after yourself so you can continue to help them. The problem sits in the back of my mind. It makes me less productive some days I sit at work, still upset, still processing what is happening to the woman I love. The pressure builds. You feel like you re walking on eggshells. You feel that if you put a foot wrong, if you react in the wrong way, or say or do the wrong thing, it will be your fault that they suffer, your fault that their carefully constructed peace crumbles. Maybe you even feel like it s your fault they are suffering because you haven t been able to help or heal them. It s not your fault. But you can t carry the burden alone. Talk to a close friend or family member, a pastor or counsellor, and make sure you have the support you need. Don t blame yourself. Stick by them. This is a mental and physical battle that must be fought on those fronts, but it is also a spiritual one. I love my wife deeply, and I pray for God to help me to love her more, to help my love heal the love that has been marred, corrupted. And yet it is a long process. Often the one you love be they a spouse, a parent, a child will withdraw and want to isolate themselves from community from church, school, work, friends. Medication or counselling will not work overnight and sometimes will only work for a season. You have to be prepared to be there for the long haul. They may push you away and pick irrational fights. You may not understand their reactions to seemingly normal situations. That s okay. Keep praying and never lose heart. It s what they need and what God wants. He can and is willing to bring hope and healing to you and your loved ones (sometimes in unexpected ways), to fight the

powers of darkness that threaten to overwhelm, and break the chains of affliction and the strongholds of despair that the enemy has set up in our lives. After all, Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted and set the captives free. What they need is for you to be there: to hold them and to love them; to support and encourage them, hopefully to strengthen them to seek the help they need; and to walk with them on their journey. * If you or someone you love is suffering from mental health issues, please seek support and professional help. written by Jarrod Stackelroth Editor Adventist Record encourages quality conversation and welcomes your thoughtful comments.
