5 Ways to Walk in Holiness Eph 4:25-32 Part 6: Replace EVIL ACTIONS with EDIFYING ACTIONS (v.31-32) 1 I. Introduction A. TURN TO Passage to read Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. B. V.31 INCLUDES ALL the KINDS of ANGER we face ALONG with the VERB RESULTS of that anger! C. It s NO WONDER WHY! Scripture is FULL of EXAMPLES of bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor and slander! D. I started looking at anger in the Bible! E. The book of Gen alone includes 12 examples. Some include: 1. Cain s anger brought personal misery, the displeasure of God, death to his brother, heartache to his parents, infamy to his whole family. Gen 4: Sarah s anger effected her relationship with Hagar and her husband. Gen 16: Esau s anger caused Jacob to run for his life and brought grief to his parents. Gen 27: The anger of Jacob s sons toward Joseph initially brought them a sense of relief and satisfaction. It also brought separation, sorrow, and harm to Jacob and Joseph. Eventually it brought a sense of fear, shame, and bad memories. Gen 37:1-36. F. Given that I only have an hour to preach, I stopped there!

G. But to summarize Scripture abounds with anger! 1. Expressed in foolish actions, unreasonable behavior and evil devices or schemes. Prov 14: Provocative words and actions that stir up fights and squabbles; words and actions that keep things in a turmoil. Prov 15: Enticing people/leading them astray. Prov 16:29; 26: Scornfulness, attempts to stir up fights. Prov 29:8 5. Expressed in family fighting, in constant bickering and fighting, family violence. Amos 1:11 6. Name calling / harsh words. Matt 5: Violent actions, physical and verbal abuse. Lk 4: Attempts at getting even, paying people back. Rom 12: Bitterness. Eph 4:31 (Col 3:19, Heb 12:15: harshness, that which is sharp, pungent, irritating, unpleasant) clamor (being noisy, shouting, arguing, being vociferous or uproarious), slander (gossip, saying bad things about another person), malice (holding grudges, being spiteful, wanting to hurt, being vicious, hateful and cruel). 10. Exasperation, discouragement, apathy, indifference. Col 3:21. and on and on! That s a lot! H. Paul: PUT IT AWAY from you CUT it OUT! 1. You can see why this has gotten covered TWICE in this Section! Remember? Eph 4:26 BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. 2. Paul now concludes this section with a list of things to put off and put on a) The difference now He s MUCH MORE SPECIFIC than he was in V.26-27! 2

II. I. Eph 4:25-32 = 5 SPECIFIC WAYS to WALK in HOLINESS SO THAT we can PRESERVE the UNITY of the Body of Christ! 1. Replace LYING with SPEAKING TRUTH (v.25) 2. Replace UNRIGHTEOUS ANGER with RIGHTEOUS ANGER (v.26-27) 3. Replace STEALING with SHARING (v.28) 4. Replace UNWHOLESOME WORDS with EDIFYING WORDS (v.29-30) 5. Replace EVIL ACTIONS with EDIFYING ACTIONS (v.31-32) Replace EVIL ACTIONS with EDIFYING ACTIONS (v.31-32) A. Once again PUT OFF, PUT ON and THE REASON! B. PUT OFF: 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. C. BTW Just to show you how PARALLEL Ephesians and Colossians are listen to Col 3:8 Col 3:8 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 1. Differ by ONLY ONE WORD each! D. Adjective all all bitterness 1. = ALL MANNER of / ALL KINDS of a) Which means it INCLUDES ALL of your bitterness! b) BUT Encompasses EVERY FORM of SIN that CAN be DONE in this LIST ( all goes with the WHOLE LIST) E. VERB: be put away from you 1. Very Strong COMMAND 2. GET RID OF 3

3. Stronger than the verb in V.25 where we put off lying 4. IMPLIES STRONGER EFFORT NEEDED to remove the things on this list! F. The LIST! 1. ALL of these = RELATIONSHIP SINS! 2. = SINS TOWARDS OTHES! 3. Why list here? CONTEXT: a) BODY OF CHRIST! b) PRESERVING UNITY! c) Paul s Context: Hostility between Jew and Gentile as seen in Eph 2: List DEFINITELY has a PROGRESSION a) Builds from the INSIDE-OUT b) bitterness = STATE of MIND deep within then c) Wrath Explosive, Rage Anger d) Clamor SHOUTING OUT IN PUBLIC!, etc. e) We ll talk about each in a moment but KNOW that this is a PROGRESSION! G. all bitterness 1. = ill-tempered, fretted, irritable state of mind that keeps a person in a state of perpetual animosity and resentment (good descriptor resentment). It is a disposition of spirit that refuses to be reconciled, characterized by harshness 2. Sounds like everybody s Aunt Martha! 3. Bitterness= negative thoughts and feelings that have burned and smoldered within for a long time. 4. Acts 8:38 calls this poisoned by bitterness = killing you and your whole body! 5. Heb 12:15 RIGHTLY calls this a root of bitterness a) BOTH verses use very GRAPHICAL PICTURE of this going deep inside you 4

6. Rom 3:14 remember that passage we just covered that describes the STATE of ALL UNSAVED! a) 3:14 says that to some degree BITTERNESS characterizes ALL of the UNSAVED! b) No wonder then that Paul ties this with No Longer walk like the Gentiles walk Bitterness is a characteristic of that walk! H. and wrath and anger 1. Remember / Review: Three words in Greek for Anger (in general) a) See ALL THREE in Ephesians! b) RAGE Anger: Eph 4:31 Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. (1) 4:31 THUMOS (wrath in v.31) = rage, wrath (two most common words used in English Bibles) (2) = INSTANT NUCLEAR EXPLOSION (3) Often accompanied by a desire to harm or inflict pain! (4) NEVER tolerated for a Christian! (5) God will show His wrath at final judgment (Rom 2:8) (6) BUT never allowable for us (7) = Road Rage, losing it RAGE (8) Of the three types RAGE anger has the SHORTEST DURATION c) REASONED Anger: 4:31 (and v.26) : ORGAY Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger (or v.26 be angry and yet do not sin ) (1) Root = to be puffed up, swell, excited (2) = Anger that COMES from VIOLATING your 5

PRINCIPLES, BELIEFS, VIEWS, EXPECTATIONS, etc. (3) I have a REASON to be ANGRY! (4) NOT Road rage NOT instant, hot-headed anger (5) Various authors: (a) Settled conviction anger (b) Anger with an element of deliberate thought (6) BUT remember this CAN and MOST OFTEN is SIN! (a) Your REASONS are REASONED BUT WRONG! (b) Your BELIEFS are WRONG! (c) I get angry EVERY TIME SHE DOES THAT! (d) Q: Should you? A: No. (7) I see this ANGER A LOT when SOMEONE BELIEVES you are ATTACKING a PERSON (a) Criticizing them (b) Insulting them (c) Trying to HURT them verbally. (d) THEY TAKE it PERSONALLY (e) You ve gotten UNDER THEIR SKIN! (f) IOW VIOLATED what they BELIEVE about themselves and they get angry! (8) REASONED anger is LONGER term and MORE PERMANENT that RAGE anger! d) RESENTMENT Anger: Eph 4:26 end / Eph 6:4 Eph 4:26 BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (1) =PAR-ORGIDZ-O = ORGAY + Preposition to INTENSIFY 6

(2) = Resentment, bitterness from BUILT-UP ANGER (3) = Anger HELD ONTO / DWELT ON (4) Hence, provoke to anger (5) One author become ugly, moody, person with root of bitterness (6) Only used TWICE in NT as a VERB (7) ONCE as a NOUN! = Eph 4:26! (8) Why do you see it in v.26? (9) A: IF you ve not LET go of your SINFUL ANGER IMMEDIATELY after the SITUATION, it has BECOME the beginning of RESENTMENT Anger you ve started down the path of bitterness, resentment, long-term anger (10) Paul: It s ALREADY CHANGED CATEGORIES! 2. OKAY the Categories of anger that I ve labeled ALL THREE of them HERE (v.31)! a) wrath = RAGE anger (Instant melt-down person) b) anger = REASONED anger (violates a belief, conviction) c) Bitterness = RESENTMENT anger (prolonged and rooted) (1) V.31 Paul chose to use the more Rare term bitterness for this one (2) HOWEVER BASICALLY the SAME THING! LOTS of OVERLAP! 3. SO BOTTOM LINE PAUL is SAYING PUT OFF ALL FORMS of ANGER a) From the deep within BITTERNESS (resentment) b) To the RAGE anger c) AND the REASONED anger! 4. All this anger has to go somewhere! a) Starts deep within 7

b) Burst outs as RAGE or extremely LOGICAL, REASONED ANGER c) But this CAN GO FURTHER! I. and clamor 1. =violent outburst, yelling in public 2. = cry out / shout CRY of PASSION against another 3. = Uncontrolled casting about of words! 4. Very OUTWARDLY / EXTERNALLY DESCRIPTIVE WORD! 5. Obviously has overlap with Wrath (Rage Anger) 6. Also IT is an EFFECT where BITTERNESS and WRATH and ANGER are the CAUSE! a) The VOLCANO effect! b) Bitterness and anger BUILD the PRESSURE c) CLAMOR is the VOLCANO erupting like WRATH! 7. clamor focuses on the EXTERNAL, PUBLIC Nature of the anger! 8. We rarely use the word clamor today with this extreme meaning to us it means just a lot of noise e.g. what a clamor next door 9. One side note CLAMOR yelling is VERY HARD on CHILDREN a) This MUST be PUT OFF to be a GODLY PARENT! b) Clamor has LONG TERM effects on children c) MOST often leads to FEAR of RELATIONSHIPS and they become adults to WITHDRAW rather than RELATE to people. d) A little child doesn t know what to do with a violent, out-bursting parent e) Parents are their WHOLE world PROVIDER, PROTECTOR, and they have nowhere else to go / to turn 8

f) SO when a parent s anger becomes clamor and wrath Children face indescribable INSECURITY and FEAR with no way to solve it. J. and slander 1. slander comes from the Greek word that we get blaspheme from! 2. In Scripture, the word is translated blaspheme when TOWARDS GOD 3. Translated slander when towards other people 4. Why is that? a) You are sinning against someone MADE in THE IMAGE OF GOD b) Therefore, you are SINNING AGAINST GOD! 5. REMEMBER: Whereas CLAMOR is extremely public and in your face that is, DIRECTED at YOU with you there - slander behind your back 6. That s why last week, I talked about SLANDER as a form of GOSSIPING! a) You are trying to HURT another person s view of that person b) Speak evil behind their back and as Solomon said they ll take into their innermost parts (Prov 18:8) c) = they ll make your slander PART of their view of that person! d) BUT Pr 18:17 The first to plead his case seems right, Until another comes and examines him. (1) Two sides to every story! 7. Now, remember our verse structure and where we are: Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. a) At this point we ve covered the FIRST part of LIST 9

b) After slander Paul puts the verb be put away from you THEN he adds K. along with all malice. 1. Why after the verb? A: Malice is the general term for EVIL! 2. Therefore a specific list and then BTW ALL FORMS of EVIL MUST GO! 3. Paul told Titus that malice characterized our UNSAVED LIVES! Tit 3:3 For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. a) He used the same word to the Romans in Romans 1:29 when he was finishing bringing ALL the unsaved GENTILES under the CONDEMNATION of GOD! 4. AND Paul commanded the Corinthians to be like babies in regards to evil! 1 Co 14:20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature. a) Isn t that a great picture?! b) You THINKING is NOT to be like CHILDREN but to be mature! c) BUT in EVIL be BABIES! 5. Looking at that list there s a LOT of STUFF to GET OUT of OUR LIVES that COMES from OUR UNSAVED WALK! a) All those forms of anger including deep-rooted bitterness b) Then our speech both DIRECT (clamor) and INDIRECT (slander) 10

L. PUT ON: 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, 1. Now the good to put on! 2. Each of these stands OPPOSED to the NEGATIVES of V.31! 3. Notice also one another / each other Paul is EMPHASING the THEME of the BOOK the BODY of CHRIST the church! a) These pull us to the corporate / overall view b) Don t leave us down on the 1-on-1 level! M. Be kind to one another 1. KEY: VERB Be = BECOME a) SO NOT BE KIND, tender-hearted as in completed action b) Rather BECOME kind, tender-hearted c) AND with the tense it is in = KEEP ON BECOMING KIND, tender-hearted! d) Paul: kindness, tender-heartedness ARE A PROCESS e) It takes TIME to BECOME KIND, TENDER-HEARTED! f) Important to remember this! 2. kind - KEEP on BECOMING - kind = my fellow Christian s good is AS IMPORTANT as my own! a) = a PROACTIVE ATTITUDE of SEEKING out the NEEDS and GOOD of other Christians in the church? 3. AND to know their needs and their good YOU HAVE TO KNOW THEM! a) That s why the word fellowship MEANS PARTNERSHIP! b) You ve got proactively pursue the other people of this church (1) To know them / partner with them 11

(2) THEN to BE KIND to them (3) To SERVE and MEET their NEEDS and their GOOD! 4. Remember that one another doesn t mean I m OK because I have one close friend in this church! a) NO! You re KINDNESS needs to REACH as MANY PEOPLE as you CAN! 5. Look back at 4:12 Eph 4:12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; a) Pastors and teachers EQUIP YOU to SERVE EACH OTHER in this BODY! b) SERVICE that LEADS to the BUILDING up of the CHURCH! 6. The CHURCH is the PRIMARY INSTITUTION that CHRIST left on earth to do His work! a) We ALL FUNCTION within the CHURCH as our PRIMARY work of Service 7. SO back to BE KIND a) Instead of being angry where you get mad because PEOPLE don t MEET your NEEDS and EXPECTATIONS b) Paul Says BE KIND PUT the needs of others in the CHURCH up there EQUAL to your own needs and your own good! c) Look back at your week and see how much went to the Church s GOOD in comparison to how much went to your good! N. tender-hearted, 1. Comes from Root word bowels =intestines! a) Acts 1:18 uses to describe Judas guts spilling out when he fell from hanging himself and tore open his bowels 12

2. Hebrews used it to mean place of feelings / affections a) Jews always literalized things b) Where do you first feel you emotions? Gut c) Gut-level feelings My stomach is in knots 3. Root translated: compassion, heart (as in attitude), tender mercies, affections 4. BTY this was not a society of tender-heartedness / compassion the sick, old, retarded, whatever, were left out by the wall to die. 5. So have a tender-hearted attitude COMPASSION towards one another fellowsufferers! 6. Again same lecture as before! a) To BE TENDER-HEARTED to ALL in the BODY b) You have to BE CLOSE to PEOPLE (1) Know them (2) Know their lives (3) Know where they need tender-heartedness, compassion c) Sure it s nice when someone who kind of knows you is tender-hearted d) BUT Paul is talking about when SOMEONE REALLY KNOWS YOU (1) Knows you for the sinner you are (2) Knows deeper, more private areas of your life where the need is (3) AND still gives of themselves to be compassionate to you! 7. AND do you see the progression here? a) Tender-hearted is MORE INTIMATE and PERSONAL than be kind b) Then next forgiving is more intimate than tenderhearted 13

O. forgiving each other, 1. Now the hard part! FORGIVING! 2. Verb = CONTINUOUS, YOU DO THE ACTION! 3. This says WE NEVER STOP forgiving! 4. Most people I ll forgive you once or twice after that forget it! a) I don t want anything to do with you b) I m not going to risk being hurt by you again you ve got a track record! 5. God You must forgive and forgive and forgive! a) 1 st time, 2 nd time, 7 th time, 70 th time 7x70th time! b) In modern speak we d say 24x7! 6. What s the problem if you don t forgive? a) Well you re back to the previous verse! b) You re going to become bitter! c) IOW when you don t forgive, you keep a POISON inside of you d) You leave a seed in the soil of your heart that will grow and poison you! e) That poison is some form of the Put off in v.31! f) There is a VERY HIGH PRICE to NOT FULLY FORGIVING! 7. And that s why the VERB TENSE here is SO IMPORTANT! a) Q: Is Forgiveness an EVENT or a PROCESS? b) A: BOTH! c) STARTS with an EVENT you have to choose the godly path of FORGIVENESS d) You have to FORGIVE e) BUT it is also a PROCESS! (1) From TWO SIDES (2) Their side you may have to forgive 7x70! 14

15 (a) Always choosing to forgive NO MATTER how often they sin against you! (b) Always going BACK into the RING and take another punch! (3) BUT from your side, (a) do you instantly forget a sin against you? (b) Does the pain instantly go away? (c) Do the thoughts of hurt melt away immediately? (d) NO you have to work at it! (4) BUT here s your side 8. WHEN you say I FORGIVE YOU you make a commitment / a promise to a) Never speak or use this against you again b) Never speak to others about this (gossip) c) NEVER DWELL on this I will work to keep my mind focused on things above and every time this ENTERS my mind I will STOP it and TURN to the LORD and think biblical thoughts! 9. Do you know what happens then? a) With God s help, it DIES WITHIN you b) Why? You ve NOT FED IT, NOURISHED IT at all c) AND you ve REPLACED it WITH GODLY thoughts! d) Do you see that? P. REASON: just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. 1. No better phrase on a Communion Sunday! 2. This is not ONLY the REASON but is the GROUND for ALL FORGIVENESS! The BASIS! a) So much in God in Christ also has forgiven you! b) If you want a verse to test almost every response against I should just as God in Christ also has forgiven me

16 3. So, how did God Forgive you? A: IN CHRIST (see it in v.32) 4. has forgiven you = COMPLETED ACTION ALREADY DONE! a) How this occur? Turn to Eph 2:1! 5. WHAT did God FORGIVE YOU of? Eph 2:1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. a) What did God forgive you of? b) TOTAL REBELLION against Him! 6. WHY did God FORGIVE YOU? 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, a) God forgave you BECAUSE LOVE motivated Him to be MERCIFUL to us EVEN WHEN we were dead = we were enemies! Ro 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 7. HOW did God FORGIVE YOU? 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of

17 yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. a) HOW? THREE ACTION VERBS! (1) Made us alive together with (v.5) (2) Raised us up with Him (v.6) (3) Seated us with Him in the heavenly places (4) ALL of this IN CHRIST JESUS (5) And what was KEY to HOW He did it GRACE (6) = UNDESERVEDLY He removed our GUILT through Christ Jesus! b) What did you have to do with this? NOTHING 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (dead people don t do nothing, do they? And just if you were trying to hold on to any of the credit )V.10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus! 8. SO WE WHO DESERVED NOTHING got what? a) COMPLETE, 100%, ETERNAL FORGIVENESS! 9. God says, I did that for you NOW YOU DO THAT a) Do you forgive me because I deserve it? NO! b) I sin I deserve eternal death! 10. BUT remember this a) When I sin against you do you realize what is really happening? b) You re sitting there trying to work up the godliness to forgive me, right? c) You know what, God has already forgiven me! d) He s just waiting for you to do the same! e) He wants you BE LIKE HIM and DO LIKE HIM

III. CONCLUSION A. I may focus on forgiveness next week there s a lot here to talk about! B. BUT let s hold on to this right now and take this to communion C. just as God in Christ has also forgiven you D. REMEMBER how much you ve been forgiven E. Think about those who you have not forgiven make a commitment to forgive them and do it NOW! 18
