He received the Senior Humboldt Forschungspreistraeger (1991) from the German government in honor of his scholarly work. He has been a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. He is a recipient of Professional Excellence Award (2003) from Council of Indian Organization. He received the Edward Goodwin Ballard Prize (2008) from the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology (Yale University) and Life Time Achievement Award (2009) from Indian Council of Philosophical Research (Government of India).
