This Sunday has a tradition built around Easter s message. In fact, the whole week following Easter Sunday has been celebrated by many as a celebration of the defeat of Satan by the resurrection of Jesus. This Sunday is known as Holy Humor Sunday and I love it. The idea of laughing at the Devil as a means of castrating him of his power is a delightful image to me. Can you just see the early Christians celebrating this day with shouts of nanner nanner nanner. Satan you are powerless over us. You have been defeated. Nanner nanner nanner. They must have taken great pleasure and the reality of the defeat must have been so vivid that it created great joy in their soul. We have not traditionally recognized this celebration so I have taken the liberty of including some jokes taken from the Midrash who took them frome The British Association for Advancement of Science who did a world-wide survey to find out what jokes seemed funniest in which countries. They sorted through more than 40,000 jokes from 70 countries. I d like to share some of the results to help us tune up our funny bone. 1
The world-wide winner was: Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn t seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other man pulls out his phone and calls emergency services. My friend is dead! he yells. What can I do? The operator, in a calm, soothing voice replies: Take it easy. I can help. First, let s make sure he s dead. OK, says the caller. There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the hunter says, Ok, now what? People from the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Australia and New Zealand preferred gags involving word play, such as: Patient: Doctor, I ve got a strawberry stuck up my nose. Doctor: I ve got some cream for that. Americans and Canadians favored jokes where people were made to look stupid. Texan: Where are you from? Harvard grad: I come from a place where we do not end our sentences with prepositions. Texan: OK where are you from, stupid? Europeans liked gags that were surreal or made light of serious subjects such as illness, death and marriage: Doctor, last night I made a Freudian slip. I was having dinner with my motherin-law and wanted to say: Could you please pass the butter? But instead I said: You silly cow, you have completely ruined my life. Some Freudian slip, huh? 2
Sports jokes also featured in the top American jokes like this one: A man and a friend are playing golf one day. One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral procession on the road next to the course. He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes, and bows down in prayer. His friend says: Wow! That is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen. You are truly a kind man. Yeah, well, the golfer replies. We were married 35 years. From Scotland: (You may have heard this one before). I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather. Not screaming in terror like his passengers. And animals figured prominently. Take the number one joke in England: Two weasels are sitting on a stool in a restaurant. One starts to insult the other one. He screams, I slept with your mother! The restaurant gets quiet as everyone listens to see what the other weasel will do. The first again yells, I slept with your mother!! The other weasel says: Go home dad, you re crazy. 3
Well, these jokes are not necessarily sanctified for this Holy Hilarity Sunday but this Psalm is: Psalm 2: 2-4. The kings of the earth take their stand against 2 the Lord. The rulers of the earth gather together against his anointed king. "Let us break free from their chains," they say. "Let us throw off their ropes." The One who sits on his throne in heaven laughs. Yes. God has certainly gotten the last laugh when it comes to this earthly life and God get the last laugh that because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Church, God s bride is born. But where did it begin, this love affair between Jesus and his bride? Who was it that said the first I do? to an eternal relationship between the Christ and the Church? Over the ages Thomas has gotten a bad wrap. Think about it. If I passed out a sheet of paper and pen to everyone and asked you to write the first word that comes to your mind when you hear the name John there might be as many different answers as there are people here today. The beloved disciple; the author of the book of John; one of the ones who saw Jesus transfigured, etc. 4
And if I called out the name Peter, again there would most likely be quite an array of words to describe Peter. Impulsive; denied Jesus; walked on water; courages; the rock; But if I were to call out the name Thomas undoubtedly most of us would come up with one word and only one word Doubt. But maybe we should think twice before we put that pencil to paper. Because Thomas was the first, and as far as what is recorded in the scripture, the only one who ever clearly referred to Jesus as God. What a revelation he had when he saw Jesus face to face after the crucifixion. This was no ordinary prophet, to wonderful teacher, this was God. And immediately Thomas said the first I Do when he respondes, MY LORD and MY GOD! There is not a shred of doubt in the words that spill out from the lips of Thomas as to who Jesus is. Not one.and there is not a shred of hesitancy in his devotion and commitment to Jesus when he proclaims Jesus as My Lord. My Lord, My God The first I do. Thomas accepts Jesus as his sovereign immediately. 5
Thomas was not at all known among the disciples as a doubter. Do you remember when Jesus was going to Lazarus and was in great danger of being discovered by those that wished to kill him. He did not stop Jesus from going but rather turned to the other disciples and said, Let s go with him and die with him. Thomas know what commitment was. Thomas was not the only doubting disciple either. Remember? When Mary ran back to them and proclaimed, I have seen the risen Lord. They did not believe her. They thought she might be a little out of it. Maybe she was overcome by grief. Or having a grief vision. But certainly, they thought, she did not see Jesus. It wasn t until they saw Jesus in the upper room that they could believe. So why is it so hard for us to accept the Thomas needed the same thing. To actually see the risen Lord himself. And let s be real, we too have heard the very same words from those who have shared their own faith with us. I have seen the risen Lord. The witness of others opens our hearts to believe but there is a deep need within each of us for a personal encounter with our risen Lord. There is such beauty in these verses. Thomas voiced what he truly needed. And Jesus was not offended. Jesus offered what Thomas heart required. But Jesus only offered what he needed -- to see the nail marks in Jesus hands; to place 6
his hand there as well as in Jesus sword-pierced side. There was no mention of nail-pierced feet from Thomas nor did Jesus offer to show him those marks as further proof. The King of kings and Lord of lords loved this one person enough to address Thomas hesitations and hurting hopes. Jesus said, See my hands. Put your hand in my side. Thomas had no need to do that. Instead he fell to his knees at the nail-pierced feet of Jesus as he proclaimed, MY Lord and MY God! Thomas proclamation, without a doubt, is the clearest profession of faith, allegiance and loyalty in the Gospels. Without a doubt! MY Lord and MY God! Let s remove all doubt. Jesus says that those of us who believe without seeing will be blessed. John ends this account, underlining what is most important -- our ultimate response to Jesus Christ. When Jesus presents himself to any of us, will we fall on our knees and proclaim, without a doubt, MY Lord and MY God? Jesus came back to the cloistered room to get Thomas. To offer his hand to Thomas. Like a lover who has left his sweetheart behind, Jesus comes back and extends his hand to Thomas and Thomas takes it. It is, as I have indicated in the title of this sermon, as if Jesus comes back and purposes to Thomas. Here Thomas, look, see, touch. Take my hand. And Thomas jumps to his invitation. My Lord and MY God. 7
Today, again, we recognize the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is here today with us and He is saying to each one of your hearts, what do you need to believe that I am alive? What do you need to help you recognize me as your Lord and your God? As we go continue in this communion service, let us realize that this is actually the engagement party of Jesus and the Church, his intended bride. It has been with much excitement that millions of people watched with great anticipation the marriage of William and Kate this week. Even many of us Americans couldn t resist at least setting our DVRs or watching reruns of the nuptials if we didn t get up at 4 a.m. to watch it live. But if you have listened to their story you know that it has been many years in the making for Kate to become royal material. Likewise, it takes us a lifetime of walking with Jesus and learning how to live as royals. We are the bride of Christ. We come to the engagement banquet, not ready to be the bride of Christ but to become the bride of Christ. In future weeks we will explore much of what is required us to grow into the royal calling that has been set on each one of us. But let us start today by accepting Jesus proposal come put your fingers in my hands and your hands in my side. Come ask of me whatever it is 8
you need in order to believe. Come share my eternal life. Come recognize me as Your Lord and Your God. Amen.. 9
