Dar Troke 410 East Wabasha Sam W. Sasser Commander My Fellow Legionnaires: COMMANDER S MESSAGE When you read this article, Christmas 2017 will be a memory. But I hope it is a very good memory indeed. I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas!!! And, I hope everyone has a very Happy New Year!!! As we head into 2018, we have a lot to do this year. We have the 1 st District Convention coming up in May 2018 and wewill be asking many of you for your help and assistance. We will need to get the reserve building cleaned up and ready for storage. We will need to get both classrooms set up to have meetings during the convention. That means most of the stuff in the north classroom will need to be moved and stored in the reserve building. After the first of the year we will begin that task. As we head into 2018 I need to thank all of our volunteers. From food nights to bingo nights to putting up the information on the Post Events Board to helping trim and decorate the bar to keeping our lawn mowed to keeping our sidewalks shoveled and salted in the winter to gambling events and all else that helps keep our Post the very busy place that it is. Our volunteers are the best and we all need to thank them for the many jobs that they do for our Post. Katie will be losing some of our bartenders, some temporarily, some permanently. We have a great group of bartenders. As Katie adds to our staff in the next few weeks, be sure to welcome the new bartenders to our Post and give them your support as they learn their new jobs and meet our patrons. I have asked this in the past and I will ask again. What would everyone like to see here at our Post as far as bands and other entertainment? I welcome your feedback and ideas. We try to have something for everyone. If you know of a band or know of some entertainment, please let me know. We will certainly look into something new. The other aspect of our Post that I have asked about is if someone or some group would like to take on something new for a food night. We have had the Miss Winona Program group step forward to put on a Ribs and Kraut night on the second Friday of the month. This has gone over quite well and they will continue through the second Friday of January 2018 and the second Friday of February They also have indicated a willingness to do the same event September 2018 through February This is great for our Post. However, how about an individual or group stepping up to do a Chicken and Biscuits night? Or perhaps a Broasted Pork Chop night? Or a Gourmet Dinner night? There are possibilities and I would like to hear your ideas on these potential food nights for our Post. As I keep saying, this is YOUR Post. What can we do to improve what we do? On that subject, we are all recruiters for new Post members. I am sure everyone knows someone who is not a member of the Legion but should be and perhaps would be if we asked them. Our membership keeps going down a bit each year, but if we try, my guess is that there are new members out there. It is OUR job to talk to them. As we head into the cold weather of winter we need to think about the men and women on our Burial Detail. Some of the winter funerals are down right cold. But the weather does not stop them. No matter how cold, they will be there when asked. By the way, if you are interested in joining the Burial Detail, I can t think of a better time or a better way to serve your Post. Think about that and come and talk to any of the Burial Detail members.
4 Also keep in mind that we are always looking for members to get involved in our Post Meetings. This is YOUR post. We invite you to attend our Post Meetings. And perhaps you might even want to get involved with our Executive Board. We are always looking for new members to take on that job. I hate to say it, but we all are not going to be here forever. We need to get more involvement from members to continue the administration of our Post. Again, think about getting involved. So far, most of this article has been about getting more involved in our Post. But, at this time, I must really thank everyone for supporting our Post by visiting the Bar, enjoying our food nights, and all of our other events. We really appreciate your support!!!! If anyone has a creative side, I would like to ask if anyone would like to assist with creating our Windjammer newsletter. I would like to have someone assist with putting the Windjammer together for printing and for uploading to our website. If anyone is interested let me know. We do the Windjammer six time a year. And we redo the Windjammer covers with updated advertisers in the fall of the year for upcoming new year. Let me know. In closing, I would like to thank everyone for their support. This is a great Post and we have great members to support us. Thank you!!!!! Respectfully submitted, Sam W. Sasser Commander American Legion Post 9
5 BAR REPORT From your Post 9 Facilities Manager Katie Lemmer Facilities Manager Happy New Year! It s crazy to think that yet another year has come and gone, but what a good year it has been. I would like to thank all of our amazing customers and volunteers for making 2017 a fabulous year! We couldn t do all that we do without all of you, THANK YOU!! It s because of YOU that we can continue to support bands and food I think it s safe to say that Winter is finally here. If you re looking to warm up, we have a bunch of new long-sleeved Legion t-shirts for sale. We have a few different colors to choose from, and sizes ranging from small to 2XL. If you re already dressed for winter and still a little chilly, stop in to the bar and have one of our bartenders whip you up a delicious hot beverage! We are offering Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate. If you re looking for more of an adult hot beverage, we can even add your favorite liquor to spice things up! Not sure what to order? Ask your bartender for a Hot Beverage Menu! And don t forget to ask for whipped cream on top! J Speaking of bartenders, you will be noticing a few new faces behind the bar. Micaela graduated from WSU and will be moving to Hilton Head, South Carolina to complete her internship in exercise science. Olivia also graduated from WSU and was accepted into the Peace Corps, she will be moving to Costa Rica in February. Kaitlin, who goes to school at the University of Wisconsin Stout, recently got a job there, and will be starting there in January. Lastly, Mike will be escaping the Minnesota cold and wintering in Texas, but not to fear, he will be back in the spring. Payton who also attends WSU will be studying abroad for a semester in Spain, how cool! She also will be back at the end of the semester, around May. So needless to say, there are some new girls around here to meet. Please stop in, make them feel welcome, and get to know all 3 of our newest bartenders. Who doesn t love grilled Chicken right? But let s be honest, no one wants to stand outside in THIS kind of weather to cook it!! Luckily for us, our wonderful SAL s are having their Annual Winter Chicken Q this month! The big date is Saturday, January 6th, but as always they will sell out, so I encourage you to buy your tickets before then. Tickets may be purchased in advance from any SAL member or at the bar. Looking to get out and have some fun on Friday s? Don t forget about our delicious Fish Fry s and Taco Nights. Most Fridays we also have a band following dinner, so please pop into the bar for a good drink, maybe even a hot drink, and some great live music! January Fish Fry: Friday the 19 th 4:30-7 Band: Cat & The Fiddle 7-11 January Taco Night: Friday the 26 th 5-7 Band: Ginny & The Right Combination 7-11 Since we re on the topic of Fish Fry s even though I am just a little bit ahead of schedule, I thought I would mention Lent. For those of you who aren t already familiar, this is when we run our Fish Fry s every single Friday. If you want to be sure you get the best fish in town, mark your calendars NOW! We will be having a Fish Fry every single Friday from February 16 th through March 30 th. Along with that, I would like to note that our Fish Fry s are totally and completely 100% volunteer run! Can we give a huge THANK YOU to the many people that give up their time to help make these nights possible!! Also, if you re interesting in becoming one of those fantastic volunteers, please contact me and we will get you started!! How about those Vikings this year, huh? How cool it would be for the Vikings to make it to the Super Bowl and play at their own stadium?! Wouldn t it be even better to be there, and watch in person.. I looked up tickets they range from $3,000-$14,000!! L OMG! And those $3,000 seats are total nosebleeds. I can promise you that you will have a much better seat here at the Legion! Our 4 large flatscreens will be showcasing it all! I should also mention that our beer will cost you just a little less here too. J If the Vikings make it, we will have drink specials during the game, so come and join us for our Super Bowl Party on February 4 th! I should mention, that we are seeking a few volunteers. The group of ladies that has been putting up decorations for the different seasons and whatnot are no longer going able to do so. If anyone has interest in taking over this responsibility, please contact me at the bar J J Happy Holidays! Katie Lagace Happy New Year! Facilities Manager

I would like to thank all those who attended the Veterans Days events. This was a great opportunity to thank Veterans and their families. Hope to see a fair amount of the Legion family at the SAL chicken Q being held on Saturday Jan 6 th. These chicken Q s are what help us raise funds for events such as the Children s Christmas Party, Toys for Kids, Little Leagues sponsorship, and recently a donation to Farmer s Park flag lighting efforts. This is only a small list of where funds are donated. There are many different events to choose from, so come be part of the fun. Print your calendar or review the monthly calendar on the wall at the Legion so you don t miss any of the great upcoming events. Just to mention a few food events we have; on Friday s they include ribs and kraut, taco night and fish frys. The Legion is always a good place for a Friday night dinner and a few beverages. Remember by patronizing your Legion you are also supporting the Veterans, the Legion, and the Legion Family Members. Your Legion is something to be proud of. We are always looking for new members and/or present members to become active. Applications are available at the bar from one of our great bartenders. SAL members; please come to our monthly SAL meeting held the second Monday of each month at 7pm at the Legion. You can help the SAL or the Post in many ways, and what better way to learn how, than at our meeting. Thanks for all you have done to help support our Squadron, Post 9, and the Legion Family. As I always state, thank a Veteran or active military member for their service. They deserve our Thank You each and every day. Please pass this Thank You forward when you see a member of the military. Please remember you have your freedoms because of them. In closing I wish you all the best, God Bless our Troops past and present and God Bless America.
