I assign this essay topic and use the included support materials every <me I teach The Outsiders to my students. Most of my students are ESL students (intermediate through reclassified), and I have found that the addi<onal support really helps my students write a good argumenta<ve essay. While this essay topic is intended to be a unit end essay, you can also assign this essay right ager Bob s death. 3 Name: Date: Per: 2016 The Daring English Teacher The Outsiders Final Argument Essay S. E. Hinton s novel, The Outsiders is filled with violence, strife, and death. In the novel, Johnny Cade and Ponyboy find themselves in a violent encounter with the Socs. One Soc, Bob, is killed during this encounter. Some people may say that Johnny is guilty of first-degree murder, and others may say that he is innocent. In a five paragraph essay, argue either Johnny s guilt or innocence in Bob s death. Your essay must be five paragraphs in length and include textual evidence and explanation to support your claim. Your final draft must be typed in MLA format. 6 2016 The Daring English Teacher Name: Date: Per: Argument Writing: Developing a meaningful counterargument Directions: Finding and writing about the opposing viewpoints might be a difficult task when it comes to argument writing. However, in order to make your argument as strong as it can be, you need to address other viewpoints and then explain why those viewpoints are incorrect. When it come s to Bob s death, some people may think that Johnny Cade is (innocent/guilty). First, think about what supporters from the other side think. Then, list as many reasons you can think of that support their argument. because Now it s time to crush their argument. List reasons they believe this. However, this claim is invalid because Johnny Cade is really (guilty/innocent). Think of a reason that supports your claim AND proves that other people are wrong. It should state what your argument is about and what you are arguing. The thesis should be just one sentence. You are writing an essay about whether or not Johnny Cade is guilty for Bob s death.
