BELIEVING IN GOD Monday 24 February 2014

KEY TERMS Agnosticism not being sure whether God exists

KEY TERMS Atheism the belief that God does not exist

CHRISTIANS BELIEVE (other religions OmniPOtent all POwerful are available) OmniSCIENT all knowing BenEVOLent all loving

WHY BE AN ATHEIST? Science proves there is no God There is no physical proof of God s existence Miracles are all coincidence Evil and suffering wouldn t happen if God existed

WHY BE AN AGNOSTIC? You just don t know (there is no reliable evidence) (or maybe there is?)

UPBRINGING Christians have three duties To marry To have children To bring those children up as Christians

BRINGING CHILDREN UP AS CHRISTIANS (PART ONE) Baptism promise to bring the child up as a Christian School send your child to a faith school Set a good example praying, reading the Bible, attending Church

BRINGING CHILDREN UP AS CHRISTIANS (PART TWO) Worship learn about Jesus and God at Sunday School Confirmation confirm and renew your baptismal vows Community Bible study groups or youth clubs (Global anyone..?)

RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE Something convinces you that God exists

TYPES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE Numinous where you are amazed, inspired and feel awe and wonder. Example?

TYPES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE Conversion something that causes you to completely change your beliefs, ideas or lifestyle. AFTER BEFORE

TYPES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE Prayer where you feel that God has answered your prayer in some way. Example?

TYPES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE Miracles an act of God that seems impossible as it goes against the laws of nature. Examples?

DESIGN ARGUMENT William Paley and his watch. Tell the story.

THE DESIGN ARGUMENT Design is the result of intelligent thought The universe shows evidence of being designed This suggests a being with intelligence designed the universe Well the universe is too complex to have happened by chance! Therefore God did it. Therefore God exists..

HOLD IT, HOLD IT. The theory suggests God is the designer it doesn t prove it What about examples of bad design?

THE CAUSATION ARGUMENT (or everything happens for a reason) Thomas Aquinas Thirteenth Century God is the unmoved mover at the start of the universe. Why.?

THE CAUSATION ARGUMENT Nothing happens by itself so everything that happens must be caused by something else The universe cannot have happened by itself a powerful cause must have been necessary God did it. (Therefore God exists)

HANG ON A MINUTE. Just because everything else in the world has a cause, doesn t mean the universe does What about scientific causes of the universe? If everything has a cause, WHO CAUSED GOD?

SCIENCE TO THE RESCUE? The Big Bang Theory fifteen billion years ago Evolution the gradual development of species over millennia (Charles Darwin) Science offers evidence that can be seen and tested

THE CHRISTIAN FIGHTBACK The creation story is more a descriptive story than a factual account The six days of creation were really stages Science says HOW but not WHY!

OR IN TEXAS. Scientific accounts are wrong. The world is 4000 years old. The creation account in Genesis is factually accurate. These are the views of CREATIONISTS.

UNANSWERED PRAYERS or why is God not listening? The answer could be Have faith it could happen in the future Your prayer will be answered in a way you don t expect Perhaps your prayer is too selfish? What you are praying for is not part of God s plan

EVIL AND SUFFERING Moral evil actions carried out by humans Natural evil things that humans have no control over

EVIL AND SUFFERING GOD ON THE ROPES? If God is benevolent, he would want to remove evil and suffering because he cares for us If God is omniscient, he would know how to remove evil and suffering Therefore God does not exist If God is omnipotent, he would be able to remove evil and suffering

EVIL AND SUFFERING THE CHRISTIAN FIGHTBACK God created a perfect world Adam and Eve messed it up (Original Sin) Jesus was sent to Earth to sort out the mess

EVIL AND SUFFERING THE CHRISTIAN FIGHTBACK Suffering is a test from God Suffering is part of God s plan Suffering allows people to follow the example of Jesus Suffering is caused by Free Will

EVIL AND SUFFERING or every cloud Enables Christians to help others (maybe by becoming a doctor or nurse) Enables Christians to volunteer with a charity or organisation Strengthens the faith of Christians has a silver lining

THE MEDIA Some religious programmes show how religion can benefit the life of an individual in a positive way

THE MEDIA Other programmes ridicule religion or question God s existence. They may suggest religious people are crazy or that being religious is wrong.

Questions (d) Parents should not force their religion onto their children. In your answer you should refer to at least one religion. (i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion. (ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you.

Questions (d) The world is so incredible that God must have designed it. In your answer you should refer to at least one religion. (i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer. (ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you.

Questions (c) Explain how the causation argument may lead to belief in God. (c) Explain how Christians may respond to the problem of unanswered prayers.

Questions (d) It is possible to accept evil and suffering and still believe in God. (i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion. (ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you.
