Essay Planning Introduction: Broad General One sentence that introduces the general topic of your essay. Nutshell Offer the reader some background information on your topic. Contention In one sentence explain what you are arguing. Example: Broad General One sentence that introduces the general topic of your essay. Nutshell Offer the reader some background information on your topic. Tanning salons are little more than heated coffins. A tanning bed is a machine that uses fluorescent lamps that emit ultra violet radiation (97% UVA and 3% UVB) to tan skin. Users lie in the bed and wear goggles to prevent eye damage. Many people believe that having tanned skin is more attractive than pale skin and they will use tanning salons. Also, some people think that tanning salons are safer than tanning in the sun, which is why they are happy to use these devices. Contention In one sentence explain what you are arguing. However, tanning salons are actually deadly killing machines and should be closed down.
Paragraph One: point to be true. Use emotive language to make your argument more
Example Paragraph: One reason tanning salons are so dangerous is because they can cause cancer, which inevitably leads to death. Skin cancer is caused by exposure to UVA and UVB rays, both of which you will receive if you use a tanning bed. In fact, some UV rays from sun beds can be as much as fifteen times higher than that of the midday sun. Clare Oliver found out the hard way, exactly how dangerous tanning salons are. Clare was 26 when she tragically died of melanoma. Clare is certain she developed cancer because of her use of tanning salons when she was just nineteen. Just before her death she wrote, I AM at peace. But if I could go back and talk to myself when I was 19, I would tell that girl not to use a solarium -- that melanoma is not a small cancer that you just have cut out and you will be fine. point to be true. Why would you risk your life, just for fashion? Clare died before she married, had children or had a career. All because she fell victim to the idea that having a tan would make her more attractive. Use emotive language to make your argument more This is a sentence that hints to what the next paragraph will be about. But perhaps Clare didn t know what the risks were? Perhaps she thought that tanning salons were a safe way of getting a tan?
Paragraph Two: point to be true. Use emotive language to make your argument more
Paragraph Three: point to be true. You could even use a personal anecdote. Also, use a superlative and adjectives to make your argument more
Conclusion Opening Briefly restate your contention (but in a different way!) Summarise Briefly summarise the key points of your essay. Call to action Finish with one or two sentences that suggest what your readers should do about this issue. Example Opening Briefly restate your contention (but in a different way!) Tanning beds should be banned in Australia. Summarise In one or two sentences, summarise the key points of your essay. Tanning beds have severe health consequences. What is worse, tanning salons won t even tell you that your life is in danger; instead they will just smile and take your money. Call to action Finish with one or two sentences that suggest what your readers should do about this issue. Ladies, do not think that a tan is safe. There is no such thing a safe tan. If you really can t resist that sun-kissed look, use safe alternatives. You can buy fake tanning products in supermarkets and chemists at very affordable prices. But the best part is, by spending twelve dollars on a can of fake tan, you will have saved yourself many weeks of suffering from sun induced cancer.
