PowerUp Week 3 The Big Dipper Bible Story: The Big Dipper (Jesus baptism & John calls Jesus Lamb of God) John 1:19-42 (Supporting: Matthew 3, Mark 1:1-11, Luke 3:1-22) Bottom Line: Discovering what God says helps you follow Jesus. Life App: Knowledge learning something new so you can be better at whatever you do. Widget: Wheel of Knowledge Welcome/Intro Comic Host and Credible Host enter. Comic Host is wearing a tan-colored jacket and is carrying a small table or TV tray. On the table is a silver tray holding a jar of honey with bugs on it, as well as a small poster board with a diagram of a pyramid scheme using pictures of jars of honey with bugs. This is all covered with a small cloth. Comic Host sets the table down and acts very calm. Hello, everyone. Welcome to [name of your FX]. This is the place where kids bring their parents to learn about God s Life Apps. Life Apps are simply something from the character of God that can show up in our own lives. I m [Credible Host s name], and this is my co-host, [Comic Host s name]. Hey, everybody! Credible Host points at the covered tray. So, what s that? You ll see after we do the Life App definition. No. Uh-uh. Things go wrong when you say stuff like that like the time you tried to fly a hot air balloon indoors... or your hip-hop dancing chicken act. When you let them out of the cages, they didn t dance. They ran amok! 1
[Credible Host s name], this actually has something to do with our Life App, Word, the whole day. That doesn t matter. Disaster can still happen! C mon, you ll like this. Let s do the Life App. I ll take my spot. Comic Host takes his spot. All right, all right. I ll give you another chance. Okay, everyone, start a drum roll on your legs and say it with us on three. One, two, three! CG: Knowledge Definition / Knowledge is learning something new so you can be better at whatever you do. Awesome job, you guys! Okay, [Comic Host s name], against my better judgment... show us whatcha got. Thanks, man. (Hyper, excited TV pitchman-type voice) Hey, everybody! Great to see you, and have I got a product for you! A product? What product? I m glad you asked! The other day I said to myself, Self, you need to make some improvements, make some changes Good advice. (To Credible Host) Quiet, son, you re interrupting my flow. (To audience) Well, folks, I m here to tell you that I have the answer. I hope it s the Life App. 2
I m here to offer you a chance to get in on the ground floor of the next amazing product! I m talking about the new, fantastic nutritional discovery of LWH! Comic Host whips the cloth off of the tray to reveal the jar of honey with fake bugs in it. Locusts & Wild Honey! (CONT D) New discovery? You do realize that s been around since John the Baptist ate it? One spoonful of Locusts & Wild Honey a day will improve your thinking, your memory, and give you knowledge. And I m here to offer you the chance of a lifetime to be LWH distributors! Umm, wait And here s the great thing! Comic Host holds up the poster board diagram. As you can see by this chart, the more people you recruit to be LWH distributors, the more money you ll make. I mean, people, I am literally bringing you a great opportunity on a silver platter! Okay, okay. Enough with the insects. I m just getting started. This is obviously a multi-level marketing scheme. Well, you don t have to lose your head over it. Have you even tried this stuff? Tried what? 3
Credible Host holds up the jar to Comic Host. Tried this! I... uhhh... no. Credible Host opens the jar and shoves it in Comic Host s face. Try it now. I... (small dry heave)... it ll cut into my profit if I... There s... (dry heave)... I ll do it backstage. Nope. Here s the spoon. Try it right here, right now. Credible Host shoves it closer. Comic Host slowly takes the spoon, dips it into the jar, and then puts it in his mouth as he grimaces. He slowly chews. It s... it s crunchy. I can t... I... (mouthful) Comic Host, hand over his mouth, runs offstage. I m going to go watch [Comic Host s name] eat this... stuff. Why don t you guys see what else is happening today? Credible Host exits. (CONT D) [Comic Host s name]! Grab a spoon and a funnel! 4
Media Time Video CG: Life App Music Video from Get REEL 2.0, vol. 22 Word LIGHTING: Dark SFX: Sam Shovel Music with Announcer VOICEOVER (SFX) He turns su-do-kus into su-don T-kus and reduces the the Rubik s Cube into 17 little cubes. He s no mastermind. He s Sam Shovel, Private Detective. SFX: Film noir music, such as The Job by Daniel Diaz LIGHTING: Sam Shovel lighting Sam Shovel enters and crosses to his monologue spot. Hello. I m Sam Sam Shovel. I m a private detective. That s right; when a crime has been committed and someone needs an investigator to get in there and do the dirty work, I m there like a plumber at the local chili cook-off or a ball-pit cleaner at the local children s pizzeria. And today I m investigating a couple of rival religious leaders. Turns out John the Baptist, a local prophet with a penchant for wearing camel hair rugs, was usurped by another guy who showed up on the scene and took a ton of Johnny s followers. If there s one thing I hate it s when one leader steals followers from another, and if there s two things, the second would be mistaking a wombat for a footstool. SFX: Knock, knock, knock I wonder who that could be. (CONT D) SFX: Fade music LIGHTING: Stage wash Sam Shovel crosses to the door. Who is it? (CONT D) 5
It s John. (Beat.) John the Baptist? How do I know it s really John the Baptist? Do you dance? No. It s John the Baptist, all right. (Open the door.) Come in, John. I was just talking about you. John enters. He s wearing a camel hair coat (or something that loosely resembles one). To who? Good question. Okay. John, I understand that you have amassed a large following of followers. But recently your followers went to follow another. You follow? Sure. Well, no need to worry that camel hair cloak of yours bald, man. I m on the job. I m gonna get your followers and turn them around like a one-legged jackrabbit. No, you don t understand. I don t want the followers back. What? Of course you do! No, I don t. But you re a leader. And a leader without followers is just a vice-president. 6
No, you don t understand Excuse me. Sam crosses to his monologue spot. SFX: Film noir music LIGHTING: Sam Shovel lighting This guy doesn t know the first thing about leading people. His lack of understanding on the subject is as odd as drivers stopping to read a keep moving sign or Canadians obsession with the letter a. Eh? Oh, but I will help him... even if he does smell a little like wet dog. SFX: Fade music LIGHTING: Stage wash Sam crosses back to John. (CONT D) All right. It seems to me you re as confused as a cat in a litter box filled with thumbtacks. No, Mr. Shovel, I am not confused. I am not who people should be following. But they were following Yes, but only to follow someone else. They are following you to follow someone else. I don t know about you, but that statement just reduced my brain to tapioca. Listen, I, John the Baptist, was sent by God to prepare the way for the Messiah of the world. The Messiah? You mean the Savior, Prince of Peace, great healer, FORGIVER OF THE SINS OF MANKIND?! 7
Yes. How do you know? The Bible said so. Way, way, way back a prophet wrote about me, and when I was born, I fulfilled that prophecy. Let me get this straight. You re standing here now telling me that back then someone said you would be here and now that you re here you re proving that the future was told in the past and it s presently true? Um, I think my brain is... Tapioca? Tapioca now, but yes. So, you see, I was supposed to have followers. And then this Messiah was supposed to steal them from you? NO! I was preparing everyone for the Messiah. And when Jesus showed up Wait! THE Jesus? Yes. That s who all of your followers followed instead of following you? Yes. I thought you knew that when you listed off all of those names earlier Excuse me. SFX: Film noir music LIGHTING: Sam Shovel lighting 8
(CONT D) Between you and me, I have to break some bad news to Mr. Lion Tamer over here. His followers decided to follow Jesus. If anyone stops following someone to follow someone else, Jesus is the only person that should be followed. This is going to crush poor ol John like an elephant sitting on a soda can or like my heart the day I realized there s no such thing as fat free pork rinds. SFX: Fade music LIGHTING: Stage wash Sam crosses back to John. (CONT D) John, I m sorry, but I think the chances of you getting your followers back is as slim as a praying mantis on a diet. Mr. Shovel. Please, call me Sam Shovel, Private Detective. Um, I don t want my followers back. As I have been trying to tell you, I have known my entire life what I was supposed to do. Scripture told me what I was here to do. Scripture told me who I was here to find. I m fine. In fact, I publicly baptized Jesus and said to everyone: Look, the Lamb of God! (John 1:36 NIV). I want people to follow Him. I m totally cool with it. I knew it. No, you didn t. Well, I do now. And you should let that be a lesson to you. Knowing what God says will help you discover who Jesus is. But I did know that. That s what I ve been telling you. Your followers follow Jesus now. SO the only train of thought I need to follow is the following statement. Follow the one who the leader of followers follows. Then you won t just be playing Follow the Leader ; you ll be following the Messiah. 9
I ll just... I ll just show myself out. Sam crosses to his monologue spot. SFX: Film noir music LIGHTING: Sam Shovel lighting Well, I think I helped ol camel skin rug realize that knowing what God says can explain a lot of things. It would ve helped him see that his followers were SUPPOSED to follow Jesus. Well, it looks like my job here is like a hamburger that s been left on the grill for four hours very well done. I m Sam Shovel. And I think that guy gave me fleas. Sam starts scratching his neck as he exits. Storyteller enters and stands in Sam s monologue spot. STORYTELLER Well, thanks to Sam, we got to see a little bit about who John the Baptist was. But, just in case you missed it, I ll do a quick recap. A long time ago before John the Baptist was born, a prophet named Isaiah wrote a prophecy in the Old Testament. It predicted that John would be born and would get people ready for the arrival of Jesus, which is pretty cool. It shows us that the Bible can be trusted and is true. And the best way to get to know God and His Son Jesus is to read the scriptures and learn all we can about Him. I think Sam may need to do just a tad bit more of it than he thinks he does, but any time is a good time to start. Let s pray. SFX: Your prayer music STORYTELLER (CONT D) Dear God, thank You for giving us scripture. Thank You for leading people to write down what they saw and learned about You so that we could know about You as well. It s in your Son s name we pray, amen. SFX: Your Word music 10
Landing & Announcements Knowledge comes in many forms. You can get it at school, by reading books, by watching a TV show, from something that you see on the Internet, or by learning something new from the Bible. You can learn facts and figures, how things work and how to fix them, and how to help people solve problems. But just having the knowledge is not an end in and of itself. It only becomes valuable when you put it into practice. So here s what I want you to do. At dinner this week, tell your family one new thing you want to learn. Then encourage each other to go learn it, and put it into practice not only to help yourself but to help others too. Let s say our Life App together one more time. CG: Knowledge Definition (CONT D) Knowledge is learning something new so you can be better at whatever you do. See you next time! Credible Host invites parents and kids back and promotes resources. 11
