2 Life and Philosophy of Prof. Biswambhar Pahi Prof. Biswambhar Pahi received his basic training in philosophy at the Universities of Utkal and Allahabad and later did graduate work in Formal Logic at Yale University, U.S.A. to earn his Master s and Ph.D. degrees. He taught at Central Washington State College and University of Notre Dame, U.S.A. He served as reader from 1974 to 1979 and then as Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science in the Department of Philosophy, University of Rajasthan, from 1979 to He worked as co-ordinator of UGC s Special Assistance Programme from 1984 to His life is an epitome of dedication towards the cause of philosophy. He has a revered place in the evolution of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika and Indian Philosophy and in teaching and research in Indian and Western Logic. He has made an astonishing attempt to mutually compliment the two traditions of Logic. Prof. Pahi s celebrated work, Vaiśeṣika Padārthavyavasthā kā Paddhatimūlaka Vimarśa, is a serious endeavour to develop further the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika system. Prof. Pahi opines that development of a philosophical system calls for harmony of philosophers commitment to tradition and freedom of thought sustained by their creative insights. The history of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika system is a witness to the fact of blind loyalty towards tradition denying to even thinkers of the calibre of Bhasarvajna and Raghunatha Siromani, the right to set one s metaphysical house in order. The most fundamental goal of his philosophy is characterizing commitment to tradition by giving it palpable form and discernible content. His philosophy aims to facilitate a natural development of Nyāya- Vaiśeṣika system by either rejection or a reconstruction (on the basis of a rational examination) of those traditional views that obstacle the same. Prof. Pahi has also made a serious and novel contribution towards Western Formal Logic. The Seminar is an endeavour to assess and evaluate the novel and deep scholarship and thoughts of Prof. Biswambhar Pahi. Themes for paper presentation You may present a paper on any of the following themes: A. Assessment of contribution towards Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika The Place of Vaiśeṣika Padārthavyavasthā in Indian Philosophy Fundamental methodological and epistemic doctrines of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika ( Loka-pratiti and Shastra, Rationality) Fundamental metaphysical doctrines of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika (Dharma-dharmi bheda, Bhedabheda vyavastha, Asatkaryavada, Padarthattva) Purusharthamimamsa of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika ( Karamavada and Samsaravada, Dukha, Adrishta, Atma, Ishwar, Purushartha) Vaiśeṣika ontology ( Akasha, Desha-kala, Avayavi, Sankhya, Parimana and Samuchchaya, Samvaya, Vishesha) B. Assessment of contribution towards Western Formal Logic. Prof. Pahi s articles published in Studies in Formal Logic. Re-phrasing the terminology of western formal logic in the jargon of Navya- Nyāya ( On Relating Two Traditions of Logic" in Logic, Navya-Nyāya and its Applications: Homage to Bimal Krishna Matilal ) C. Contribution towards Aesthetics, Poetics, Greek Philosophy:- Ideas pertaining to Prof. Pahi s vision in other streams of thought. 2
