Your presence here is indicative of our chapter s belief that you possess those values which would make a positive contribution to our brotherhood, as well as your own statement about who you are and your course in life. As you may be aware, we have certain criteria on which all members of Sigma Chi are evaluated. Many years ago, one of our Fraternity s founders wrote a standard that serves as a guide for all of us today. Please read along quietly (gesture to The Jordan Standard on the table) while I/Brother recite/s." (The Jordan Standard is then recited from memory while they read along quietly) Ask the pledges to replace their blindfolds (Optional)

Instead it should provide a comfortable environment for both the Magister and Pledge. Therefore, both should be sitting in comfortable chairs and facing each other. There should be no one but the Pledge and the Magister in the room during the Statement reading. Logistics One at a time, have the Brother Guide bring a pledge into the room being used and sit them down across from and facing the Magister. The Brother Guide should be ready to retrieve the pledge once the reading is done. Note: If you have chosen not to use blindfolds, just call them into the room one at a time, informally. Ask them to remove their blindfold. Refer to the Membership Commitment Statement: Script. Ask them to replace their blindfolds. (Optional) The Brother Guide then leads the pledge back into the holding room. Once all pledges have been read and understand and agree with the Membership Commitment Statement, conclude the evening with Bid Night Activities (e.g. Dinner, Movie, etc.)

MEMBERSHIP COMMITMENT STATEMENT: SCRIPT Notes: Presentation of the Statement is mandatory. It must be used as follows: It is to be read to each pledge by the Chapter Advisor, Co-Advisor, Magister or Assistant Magister at the start of the pledge period, and before the pledge signs the pledge form. It is to be read privately and separately in an atmosphere conducive to the fullest thought, understanding and consideration of beliefs. It is to be covered point by point, with opportunity for comments or questions after each. The definitive point footnoted at the end of point (7) in the Statement may be used to clarify any confusion on the part of the pledge(s). CONFIDENTIAL MAGISTER: Membership in Sigma Chi is a lifelong commitment. You can be expelled for reason; you cannot resign. The Ritual of the Fraternity is secret but it has equal force and validity with the Constitution, a non-secret document. Although the Ritual is secret, the commitments of the Fraternity to its initiates and of the initiates to Sigma Chi are so deep and binding that Sigma Chi believes that every man proposed for membership should have a real understanding of the nature and scope of these commitments, so that no man shall enter into his lifelong relationship unknowingly or with reservations. To bring about such understanding and acceptance is the purpose of this dialogue on the principles and requirements of Sigma Chi. The Badge of Sigma Chi reflects the Christian faith of the Founders. The White Cross is the Badge of a college fraternity; not the symbol of a religious order. If you are to wear the Badge of Sigma Chi, you must be prepared for and welcome the natural assumption of the world at large that Sigma Chi has Christian foundations. The assumption is and will be valid. Sigma Chi draws reverently upon Christian ideals. These teachings were implicit in the minds of the men who founded Sigma Chi. Our principles and commitments are set within this framework. Do you find any conflict between your own personal convictions and Sigma Chi, a lifelong commitment? During your pledgeship, you will be asked if you believe in the existence of an ever-living God, the Creator and Preserver of all things. Your answer to this question must be an unqualified yes. Later there will be no opportunity for debate or discussion. What will be your answer to this question?

During progress toward becoming a Sigma Chi you will be charged to conduct yourself throughout life as a man of honor and a gentleman; a warm, trusted and dependable friend, with deep respect for the needs of your brothers and the interests of all in the preservation of the fraternal bonds and the reputation of the Fraternity; to maintain the secrecy of the Ritual and to obey the laws of the Fraternity and your chapter; to perpetuate the interests of the Fraternity and your brothers in all honorable ways; and to realize a responsibility to not only your own chaptermates, but to all Sigma Chis. Will you be able to bind yourself to such an obligation? Note: The following may be used if further explanation is necessary: The concept of the divinity of Christ was, we believe, implicit in the minds of the Founders; however, the obligations to which we and those who are to follow, commit ourselves do not expressly affirm this divinity or the existence of the Trinity, and the Fraternity does not require express affirmation of belief in these concepts as a condition of membership

FORMAL PLEDGING CEREMONY Note: Everyone participating (including the pledges!) need to be in pin attire! Needed Materials A room large enough for pledges and actives Pledge Pins Pillow for Pledge Pins Printed Ceremony (2: Consul and Rush Chair) List of Pledge Candidates for Recruitment Chair Blindfolds (Optional) Needed Participants Pledges The Consul Magister Asst. Magister(s) Actives (as many as possible) Setting The setting should be semi-ceremonial, being more formal than anything else. Candles are not necessary, but it could add to the ambience if desired. The room should be large and with minimal distractions, meaning clean and uncluttered. White sheets may be used as well to close off any room openings if necessary or desired. Logistics All actives participating are on one side of the room facing the direction where the pledges will be Pledges should be positioned in a row facing the actives Consul asks for the pledges to remove their blindfolds (Optional) Refer to the Formal Pledging Ceremony: Script Following, all but the pledges may leave Continue to the Week 0 Meeting

FORMAL PLEDGING CEREMONY: SCRIPT RECRUITMENT CHAIRMAN: (Memorized excluding names) (addresses the Consul and assembled brothers): Brothers, it is with great pleasure that I announce the pledging to the Sigma Chi Fraternity of...(reads each name)...i present them to you for the ceremonies of formal pledging. CONSUL: (Read) We are about to place upon you the pledge pin of our Fraternity, which is a token of the high esteem in which you are held by the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi. Our pledge pin is a Norman Shield of blue, bearing a White Sigma Chi Cross, and is a symbol of the pure and lofty ideals which you will find in Sigma Chi. The fundamental purpose of our Fraternity is to develop character and personality, to maintain high ideals, to preserve high academic standards, and to instill responsibility and brotherhood. We, as a Fraternity, by our association and our example, are committed to that purpose for your benefit. Pledging Sigma Chi is a process of learning, inspiration and attainment, by which you must come fully to understand that membership in our fraternity is dependent upon your willingness to search within yourself for those values which form the basis of our brotherhood, and to adopt them as your lifelong binding obligation. We shall assist you in every positive and constructive way. Ultimately, however, your eligibility for initiation in Sigma Chi will be determined by the strength of your own character and of your commitment to the ideals of our white cross. In wearing this pledge pin you will be known to all as one of those who Sigma Chi has favored in its selection of men to perpetuate and exemplify our standards, which are stated in the pledge oath you are now called upon to take. Raise your right hand and repeat after me: (read slowly and clearly) I, STATE YOUR NAME, OF MY OWN FREE WILL AND ACCORD, BEFORE GOD AND THE MEMBERS OF THE SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY HERE ASSEMBLED, HEREBY ACKNOWLEDGE MYSELF AS A PLEDGE OF THE BETA UPSILON CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI. AS SUCH, I WILL WEAR WITH PRIDE THE PLEDGE PIN GIVEN ME UNLESS RELEASED BY THE CHAPTER FOR GOOD CAUSE. I WILL ADVANCE THE INTERESTS OF THE FRATERNITY AND OF ITS INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS

IN EVERY HONORABLE WAY AT ALL TIMES. I WILL ACCEPT THE RESPONSIBILITIES ASSIGNED ME, AND WILL MAKE EVERY HONORABLE EFFORT TO BE A MAN OF GOOD CHARACTER A STUDENT OF FAIR ABILITY WITH AMBITIOUS PURPOSES A CONGENIAL DISPOSITION POSSESSED OF GOOD MORALS HAVING A HIGH SENSE OF HONOR AND A DEEP SENSE OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. I WILL DO NOTHING TO BRING DISCREDIT UPON THE FRATERNITY WHOSE BADGE IT IS MY HOPE TO WEAR. I PROMISE THESE THINGS REALIZING THAT MY PLEDGESHIP IS A TIME OF PREPARATION FOR BROTHERHOOD IN SIGMA CHI DURING WHICH THE STRENGTH OF MY COMMITMENT TO THE VALUES WHICH ARE THE FOUNDATION OF SIGMA CHI WILL DETERMINE MY WORTHINESS FOR INITIATION. I WILL STRICTLY OBEY THE RULES OF THE CHAPTER AND FRATERNITY AND WILL CONDUCT MYSELF ALWAYS AS A HIGH-MINDED MAN AND A GENTLEMAN. THESE PROMISES I MAKE IN ALL SINCERITY AND ON MY HONOR AS A PLEDGE. You have taken this oath as the first step in becoming a member of the Fraternity. You are the men who we hope will become the future leaders of Sigma Chi, and who will in college and throughout life exemplify the high standards recited in the oath you have just taken. Your experience in pledging will help determine the type of student and alumnus member of Sigma Chi you will be. In like manner, the strength and positive contribution of our chapter on this campus and in our community during the coming years will rest with you. The chapter has placed its wholehearted confidence in its Magister, Brother. He will be your guide and your friend. I will now ask him to assist me in placing the pledge pin of Sigma Chi upon you. The Consul, Magister (and other officers if desired) place a pledge pin from a pin board on each of the pledges, and then extend to each a regular handshake and a brief word of congratulations, such as, Our chapter takes great pleasure in placing upon you the pledge pin of Sigma Chi and wishes you well. Congratulations.

WEEK 0 MEETING Needed Materials Laptop or Computer with the Academic Assessment Spreadsheet loaded. Pledge Printouts file printed for each pledge Pledge Contact Sheet printed Needed Participants Pledges Magister Asst. Magister(s) Logistics Have a small informal meeting in whatever room is available after the Pledging Ceremony and announce the following: (Attend Study Tables Monday through Thursday, 7-9 unless instructed otherwise) Discuss with them the academic policy/requirements for Initiation, referring to the Pledge Academic Assessment, walking them through how their Sigma Chi Grade is assessed. Give them time to ask any questions. If they would like, them a copy of the file so that they may mess with it to see its results in a hypothetical situation. Pledge Meetings will be (Mondays) unless otherwise noted. If there are any extra activities (such as the ceremonies), expect them to be on (Thursdays). The exception being potential weekend events such as the lock in, ropes course, and Big/Little or Chapter Brotherhoods. Specific times and dates will always be announced the Meeting prior. There will be a Lock-In to look forward to. Date and time will be announced later but expect it to be during (Week 6). Be prepared to have Sigma Chi homework and memorization. There will be an Exam given from Sigma Chi International Headquarters. Note: You must complete it with a minimum of 80 percent to be initiated. At every Pledge Meeting:

Dress in formal attire including nice shoes, slacks, collard button-down shirt, and tie. Shirt should be tucked in, a belt should be worn, and dress socks as well. Over your left breast, wear your pledge pin in a vertical position. Though not required, it would be commendable to dress in such attire throughout the day to present to the campus the obligation and responsibilities you now possess as a future member of Sigma Chi. Note: Wearing the Pledge Pin is an honor and shows both the Sigma Chi Brothers and the rest of the world that you have taken on the responsibilities of bettering yourself and all of humankind. Wear it with pride and do not be ashamed to show it (but do so without arrogance). Note: The pledge pin can only be worn if the rest of your attire is presentable. Bring with you to every meeting, a three ring binder and a pen/pencil. They will not be provided for you. It is suggested to put separators each designated a week of the Preparation for Brotherhood Program (7 weeks). Bring this starting with your first meeting next Tuesday. You will also receive your Pledge Manual, The Norman Shield, at your first meeting. Bring it with you to every consecutive meeting. Announce that they are to bring with them their laptops (if they have one) to the first meeting and that they will need to be able to access the school internet. Give them the time and location of the first meeting. Pass out "Big Brother Requests" Note: Make sure they know the gravity of their choices. Ask them to print out their Midterm Grades (if posted at this time) and bring them to (Monday s) Meeting. Ask them to gather their professors s and give them to you at the first meeting. Pass around the contact sheet and keep it in your binder. Update the page, Pledge Contact Sheet, in the Week 1 Pledge Packet file to be ed to and printed by each pledge. Before each weeks meeting, including our next meeting, you will be ed a file which contains the necessary sheets that you need to bring. Print the file and place it in your binder under that week s tabs. Some sheets will need to be filled out. Please do so before the meeting. In closing, give appropriate reminders if needed, and offer words of encouragement. Proceed with the nights activities if there be any.

Notes on the Meetings (for Magister): Encourage Participation from Everyone, but don't Force Them: Instead of going around the table and asking for opinions or input, just ask a question and let people volunteer their answers. There will be times during any meeting that each person will "phase out" (especially if it is a long and boring meeting.) If you call on every person, it wastes time, and puts people on the spot. Other ways of encouraging participation is to just ask a question, and after someone answers, say something like, "Good, let's hear from someone else." If there are people in your meeting who rarely speak, instead of calling on them directly, you might say something like, "I value the opinion of each of you, does anyone else have something to add." Then, just look at the person you want to hear from. If he or she has something to say, he or she will say it if encouraged in this way. If he or she doesn't, then you haven't embarrassed the person.

Professor, My name is., New Member Educator for the Sigma Chi Fraternity. At this time, your student has become one of my students, pledging our fraternity to better himself along with our Greek, university and general community. By joining any values based organization is to announce to the world that we live by a certain set of standards and ideals. This means in return, the world looks to us to be accountable for the ideals we tell them we live by. Striving for academic achievement is one of the obligations a Sigma Chi undertakes. Similarly, it is one of the most public records the general community looks at for that accountability. I am hoping that, as their academic professor, you may be able to further involve yourself in your student s success with a few simple measures: Involvement: At the end of every week, we ask our pledges to get a check off from each of their professors on their general attendance and involvement level during class. At this point, these weekly checks are either a passing or failing (Yes or No) for that week. This has nothing to do with their GPA and should be to your own discretion whether you feel like they have a positive influence/involvement in your class during that week. GPA: Furthermore, they will be given two "Grade Checks" at both the beginning and end of the program. These "Grade Checks" are one of the most important aspects of the pledges Academic Assessment. Concluding Evaluation: Near the end of the Pledge Program, we also ask the pledge to get an overall "Professor Evaluation" based on the criteria of Exceeding, Achieving, or Underperforming. The Academic Assessment implements several other agendas, all which get weighted together in a final assessment of the pledges success in Academic Achievement. If you have any questions or concerns, or you would like to receive a copy of the detailed Scholastic Program (Excel Format), feel free to contact me. I look forward to your help on our student's success! Thank You, New Member Educator Sigma Chi Fraternity

Big Brother Expectations A Big Brother should be prepared to take on the following responsibilities: 1. To be responsible for introducing and acclimating the pledge to chapter life and operations, including the roles of chapter of officers and all individual member chapter obligations; 2. To be responsible for assuring that the pledge develops an acceptable level of understanding of the meaning and significance of each aspect of the chapters pledge program, and to be open and responsible to all questions i. This means to familiarize yourself once again with our founding, founders and all information they may ask you about throughout the pledge program. If you do not know an answer, say you will find out for them and actually do that. ii. Rememorize the lits and ask them to recite them for you. In order to do this though (without going into any shade of hazing), you should be able to recite it for them as well. 3. To function effectively as an assistant Magister in carrying out specific instructions and monitoring tasks as they are assigned by the Magister or pledge committee; 4. To assist in the accomplishment of all post-initiation education procedures and programs of the chapter for the pledge or pledges over which the Big Brother has accepted responsibility; and 5. Above all, to teach by example, those character traits and behaviors that are central to the meaning of the Ritual. There will be mandatory attendance and involvement for one to two pledge meetings; the most important being the Meeting of Week Four. Thursdays will be held as activity days. For instance, Thursday of Week One will be a showing of Dead Poets Society following a discussion on leadership. Participation in these is vital to learning more about your Little Brother. Including Sigma Chi assignments such as Norman Shield Readings and Memorization, the pledges will receive a very short reading on Leadership and People Skills. The readings come from the introduction to each chapter of a Book titled The Leader in You by Dale Carnegie and Associates. The readings will usually be examples of a specific moment in a historic leaders life, for example Theodore Roosevelt speaking with a father with a problem. These reading infer to principles to live by. It will be up to you and you Little to discuss these readings, what the big picture could be and how both you and your little could or have exemplified it in your life. While weekly hangouts have been mandatory in the past, it is one of the greatest responsibilities in the new program, being a specific time to go over the week s

material and have Sigma Chi discussion. A possible example: every Thursday before their activities (if they have any that week), take them to dinner. This get-together is about bonding through Sigma Chi and a great time for a check up on their progress, academically or as a pledge, and to go over the weekly reading. Therefore, this meeting should not be the only meeting you have with your Little throughout the week. Have other meetings that are more casual and less on Sigma Chi specifically. You must be here for the full semester and at least the following semester during the NIB's PIT semester. If you will only be here for the minimum, you must discuss it with your Magister.

To provide a brief outline of his position and that he will always be there for their support. MAGISTER SESSION Objectives of Pledging Sigma Chi Note: Refer to the self titled sheet following. Have them read along (form their printouts) as you read. Concluding the reading, direct them to "Primary Expectations" which is included after the Objectives section. They should remember this being told to them at the meeting following the Pledging Ceremony. Without reading it for them, ask them to briefly look over it and give them time to voice their questions or concerns. The Purpose of Sigma Chi Introduction Hand out their Norman Shields and ask them to open to page 15 and to read along with you Read aloud from your own Norman Shield or following here: The fundamental purpose of the Sigma Chi Fraternity is the cultivation, maintenance and accomplishment of the ideals of friendship, justice and learning within our membership. Our brotherhood has its roots in the collegiate experience and engenders a lifelong commitment to strive to achieve true friendship, equal justice for all and the fulfillment of learning as part of our overall responsibilities to the broader communities in which we live. We achieve these ideals through the practice of character qualities embodied in our Ritual. We continuously reaffirm our purpose through the observance of Sigma Chi s Governing Laws and through adherence to the decisions of our legislative assemblies, which empower and direct our leadership. Each Sigma Chi completes a period of education devoted to under-standing our unique history, traditions and practices, which culminates in an opportunity to accept a lifelong commitment to Sigma Chi and the achievement of our purpose. Sigma Chi Fraternity best serves its purpose by developing, implementing and monitoring programs that foster leadership, build character and promote positive relationship skills which, in turn, enable our members to become productive and caring participants in their families, colleges and communities.

Sigma Chi s leadership consists of elected or appointed volunteer members who are supported by professional personnel located at our International Headquarters. Together, they manage the Fraternity s operations and oversee its programs. Ice Breaker: Who Am I? (only if appropriate) Note: Refer to the self titled sheet. Expectations and Obligations of Pledgeship Note: Refer to the self titled sheet. Norman Shields Refer back to the Norman Shields they had received at the beginning of the meeting. Read the following: The purpose of The Norman Shield is to aid each of you in gaining knowledge and understanding of Sigma Chi and the chapter, and to assist you in preparation for the active, lifelong brotherhood of the Fraternity. It is your introduction to the fraternity system as well as Sigma Chi. Use it as a reference and guide in teaching the philosophy, heritage, and traditions vital to each of you if you are to fully understand Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi, our heritage and ideals, will necessitate responsibility to purpose, intensive thinking, and open discussion. Use the Norman Shield as a tool to aid in the discussions that we will be having throughout pledgeship about Sigma Chi's heritage and purpose. Do not expect The Norman Shield to take you through pledgeship. It is essential to participate in our weekly meetings and activities, along with communicating with all active members and your fellow pledges outside of these meetings. In short, The Norman Shield is there to compliment your learning and to develop an interest in Initiation and in Sigma Chi as a lifelong commitment. There will be readings from the Norman Shield assigned to each of you through each week of pledgeship. These assignments will cover most of the Normal Shield but will not include everything. It is up to you to be motivated to read the rest. I am Your Fraternity Note: Read the reading, making sure to let them read You Expect Note: Refer to the self titled sheet.

Pledge Forms Have each pledge open their Laptops and log onto with the chapter username and password Login: BetaUpsilon Password: BeUp49 Add a new pledge by clicking the 'Add Pledge' link. This opens the 400A. Enter pledge information minus SSN and Print the form for records (if desired). After printing, add in the SSN and press 'submit'. Make sure all pledges have the same pledge date! Do not press submit more than once! Once submitted a new pledge (if without a laptop) can now enter their information over the last pledges and hit submit (again, only once). Once all the pledges are entered on each laptop, press 'Refresh' or 'Reload'. This generates the 400 B form, which is to be filled out later by the Magister.

OBJECTIVES OF PLEDGING THE Pledgeship in Sigma Chi is to prepare each of you for a personal commitment to the ideals for which Sigma Chi stands, and for the understanding and acceptance of the fundamental values of our Fraternity. True friendship, brotherhood, and the lifelong development of character demand accountability for one's course in the Fraternity, in college, and throughout life. The Preparation for Brotherhood program is the beginning of your fraternal experience, and its paramount goal is the communication of expectations of our brothers, our academic institutions, and our society. Educational attainment, personal development and the contribution of value in all aspects of the world around must be fundamental expectations of brotherhood. I challenge you to discover the personal commitment that underlies our ideals, and to adopt it as your lifelong, binding obligation. The structure of each of our meetings will be discussion based, and not lecture based. The benefit of this structure will be personalized learning for each of you. We value every input during these discussions so say everything on your mind. Know that how much you put into these discussions will reflect how much you take from them, learn from them, and learn from and about each other.

ICE BREAKER: WHO AM I? Needed Materials Small piece of paper for each of the pledges with their name written on it Needed Participants Logistics: Pledges Magister or Facilitator Each member has 5 minutes to come up with a list of interview questions they are to ask each of their pledge brothers. Note: Pledges should use the paper from their Binders. In speed interview style, each member has 4 minutes to interview each other, two minutes each asking the questions. Give each pledge one of these pieces of paper but with another pledge s name on it (instead of their own). Make sure they do not give away the name on their sheet. Go down the pledges and have them introduce the respective pledge on their sheet without giving away their name. Finally, they ask Who am I? Give time for each pledge to write down who they thought was just introduced on a sheet of paper. It would work best to work down a line, introducing everyone first, then revealing the answers. Note: the introduction should not include physical features.

EXPECTATIONS AND OBLIGATIONS OF PLEDGESHIP Purpose It is essential that the men who are contemplating making a lifetime commitment to the ideals and values of Sigma Chi have a complete and thorough understanding of the responsibilities, expectations and obligations they are about to accept. The discussion should review the Membership Commitment Statement specifically, its relevance and meaning to the Fraternity and its members. Likewise, the discussions should cover the expectations the individual should have of the Fraternity and what the Fraternity expects of that individual as an initiated member. The second part of the discussion should focus on what one can do to ensure a chapter environment that promotes the congruence of lifestyles with the expectations derived from the fundamental values expressed in the Ritual specifically the concept of brotherhood in its purest sense. For example, what do we mean by reciprocal bond? Is brotherhood simply the chapter s obligation to the individual? It is important that this discussion focus on a brother s inherent obligation to confront those individuals who freely choose to bring dishonor to the name of Sigma Chi and fail to fulfill their expectations and obligations of membership. Note: Possible Introduction by Magister It is essential that you, as a pledge contemplating making a lifetime commitment to the ideals and values of Sigma Chi have a complete and thorough understanding of the responsibilities, expectations, and obligations you are about to except as a future Sigma Chi. Please review the Membership Commitment Statement that was read to and asked of you during the pledging ceremony. Ask any further questions you may have. Needed Players: Facilitator (Magister or senior brother) Discussion Group Leaders (Assistant Magister(s) or Big Brothers; only as needed) Pledges Materials Needed: The Membership Commitment Statement The Expectations & Obligations Discussion Outline (Below) Code of Conduct for Pledges Code of Conduct for Brothers I am Your Fraternity

Logistics: Facilitator should open session by reviewing the goals of the session. He should review the Membership Commitment Statement with the group. Break the group into the appropriate discussion groups (recommended size, 1:5). Each discussion group leader facilitates a discussion based on the discussion outline. Review the Code of Conduct for Pledges and Brothers. Seek input about each of the statements; pledges need to understand each point. At the end of the discussion, each pledge should sign a Code of Conduct for Pledges. Be sure each has a copy to keep for themselves. Bring groups back together and have a summary of each group. Allow discussion. At the end, read the Code of Conduct for Brothers. Each active brother attending should sign the Code of Conduct for Brothers on the same sheet. Explain that this sheet will be signed by all brothers and posted on the corkboard at the entry of the house. Pass out "I Am Your Fraternity" to each pledge Read the first section of "I Am Your Fraternity" until YOU EXPECT Have a pledge read the portion of I Am Your Fraternity discussing what the pledge can expect of the brotherhood (YOU EXPECT) Have a senior brother read the portion of I Am Your Fraternity discussing what the Fraternity expects of its members. (I EXPECT)

DISCUSSION OUTLINE What is meant by a lifetime commitment?* How does one fulfill his lifetime commitment?* Can two brothers fulfill their lifetime commitment differently? Can we measure whether or not someone is fulfilling their obligation? How? What are your obligations as an undergraduate? As an alumnus?* Whose obligation is it to confront brothers who do not live up to their obligations?* Should a person be able to resign his membership? Why do you suppose the Ritual of Sigma Chi is secret? Why did the founders choose the White Cross as the Fraternity s emblem?* What assumptions does society associate with this emblem? Are these assumptions valid?* Is the fact that Sigma Chi was founded on Christian ideals relevant to us today? Why or why not?* Why is it important that you believe in an ever-living God? What is brotherhood?* What are examples of it? What is meant by the phrase reciprocal bond?* Is the Fraternity a business or a brotherhood? Is the business aspect of the Fraternity inherent in the concept of brotherhood?* Which is more important: the brotherhood s obligation to the individual member or the individual s obligation to the brotherhood?* *NOTE: Depending on the time allotted for the discussion, you may not be able to cover all questions. Please give the * (gray) questions priority when facilitating the discussion.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITMENT STATEMENT CONFIDENTIAL Membership in Sigma Chi is a lifelong commitment. Furthermore, the concept of the divinity of Christ was, we believe, implicit in the minds of the Founders; however, the obligations to which we and those who are to follow, commit ourselves do not expressly affirm this divinity or the existence of the Trinity, and the Fraternity does not require express affirmation of belief in these concepts as a condition of membership.

CODE OF CONDUCT: FOR PLEDGES As a pledge of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, I will conduct myself in a manner that will reflect favorably upon this fraternal organization. I understand and accept the obligations stated in the Jordan Standard and the Sigma Chi Creed. I will learn and use correct manners and exercise good grace when among women or men, and will strive to make those around me feel at ease. I will strive for academic achievement and practice academic integrity. I will meet my financial obligations when they are due. I will protect the health and safety of all human beings. I will respect the dignity of all persons; therefore I will not physically, verbally, psychologically, sexually abuse or haze any human being. I will respect my property and the property of others and will neither abuse nor tolerate the abuse of property. I will neither use nor condone the use of illegal drugs; I will neither misuse nor condone the misuse of alcohol. Paramount to this pledge is my promise to confront my peers whose actions conflict with the standards of membership in Sigma Chi. 39 I AM YOUR FRATERNITY I AM YOUR FRATERNITY, the spirit of your Founders. To me I am the badge. Others, when they think of me, have in mind the pledges, the upperclassmen, the old grads. To some I am the dance, the excitement, the spirit of joyous living. To some I am a place where friendships are formed and brotherly love reigns supreme. I am all of these and more. You have selected ME as your fraternity, the fine influence you expect to aid in your preparation for life. Selection is a double process. From you who have come to me I shall select those worthy of my ideals; to them I shall be a source of eternal inspiration. You have come expecting certain things of me and I welcome you. I, in turn, expect certain things of you. YOU EXPECT. You expect me to be an imposing fraternity with a fine home and beautiful surroundings. This expectation you will realize. But full beauty is not realized. New names are being added to my book, new achievements to my record. Glorious deeds mark my progress. This is the beauty of becoming, the beauty of growth. I am growing. You expect me to have a worthwhile and inspiring membership. Every member is working to give you the best opportunity to express yourself, to realize your ambitions. On my rolls of years gone by are leaders in many fields, men of state and national reputation. You will find them eager to know you, and greet you by that sacred epithet of brother. You expect me to provide an environment conducive to mental and spiritual health. This you shall have through contact with brothers and others that I shall arrange for you. You expect to find social opportunities and good fellowship. These I offer you in fullest measure. You will be associated with men who are striving, like yourselves, for intellectual advancement. Some you meet will appeal especially to you, and become your dearest friends. And, finally, you have a right to expect the time you spend with me to be the happiest years on earth. Properly balanced with work, there are no better times than those spent in the wholesome activities of fraternal life: the social gatherings, the associations with friends, the comradeship and fellowship of your brothers. This fullness of expectation and joyousness of your life with me I wish you heartily. But our association is a contract, and your happiness depends on you keeping certain obligations. I EXPECT. I expect you to be earnest in your acceptance of membership, faithful in your feeling of deep responsibility, eager in your pursuit of knowledge, which is, after all, our mutual obligation. I expect you to be careful of your health. Your energy and vitality are valuable possessions, too necessary for your happiness for you to risk them in any sort of dissipation. I expect you to feel your responsibility in the use and care of your abilities, your time, and your opportunities. I expect you to cultivate your social side, to endeavor to discover and use qualities and talents which may lie hidden in you; to make use of the many opportunities which I

have provided to enrich your life. I expect you to bring with you the buoyant spirit of youth, a fresh eagerness which laughs at difficulties and spurs you on to fields of noble endeavor. Remember: So near is grandeur to our dust, So nigh is God to man, When Duty whispers low Thou Must, Youth replies, I can. I expect you to be loyal, to uphold my traditions, to be worthy successors of those, my sons, who have gone from me to the work of the world and of those achievements I am proud. With this understanding of our joint responsibility, I welcome you to my halls and offer all my material and spiritual resources to help you realize your expectations. I AM YOUR FRATERNIT!

BIG BROTHER OBLIGATION CEREMONY: DURING CHAPTER The chapter Consul uses the proper Ritual to call the Magister forward. The Magister then calls the prospective Big Brother forward. MAGISTER: Brother (State each Big Brothers Last Name), approach the sacred shrine of our brotherhood. (The Magister addresses the Consul.) Worthy Consul, these brothers seek to benefit our chapter by serving in a capacity befitting high minded men. CONSUL: MAGISTER: CONSUL: Do you consider them worthy of their task? I do, Worthy Consul. Then, with the support of the chapter, I charge these men to duty. My brothers, the obligations of becoming a Big Brother in the Chapter of Sigma Chi is one that is equally as binding as the very oath of brotherhood that bonds us together. If you can fully appreciate and accept the solemnity of your duty, and wish to still contribute your maturity and wisdom for Sigma Chi, raise your right hand, and repeat after me: I, (state your full name) * do solemnly swear * In front of God and my brothers here assembled * to cherish the task of tutoring a future brother in our chapter. * I shall think no thought, * utter no word,* do no deed which will through my actions * lessen the growth and maturity of my Little Brother.* I will give to him * the benefit of my experience, * my wisdom, * and my love for Sigma Chi. * And in return, ask for trust, work, and respect. * I say these words upon my honor * as a true and loyal Sigma Chi. You may lower your hands. MAGISTER: My brothers, the seriousness of your relationship with your Little Brother cannot be underestimated. You must lead by the example set forth in our teachings. Our chapter charges you with our future. Guard well the honor of the Cross. *This ceremony was written by Brother Curtis K. Bayer, Cal. State San Bernardino 90

BIG BROTHER/LITTLE BROTHER CEREMONY Needed Materials: Table with White Tablecloth Large White Candle Room Darkening Devices (if necessary) White tea candles (1 for each Big Brother) Blue tea candles (1 for each Pledge) Needed Participants: Big Brothers Pledges Magister Actives if desired Setting: Logistics: At the head of the (dark) room, a table stands with a white tablecloth. On top of the table burns a large white candle and a medium blue candle. All pledge brothers have a blue candle and active brothers have a white candle. Both pledge brothers and active brothers should hold the candle in their left hand. Again, the large white candle and medium blue candle should be illuminated. The pledge brothers should be led in with blindfolds in alphabetical order, and should stand in a line in front of the table. In their left hands, place a small blue candle The big brothers should line up directly behind his prospective Little Brother out of site, holding in their left hands a small white candle. All other actives are behind the Big Brothers also out of site if present. Proceed to the script.

BIG BROTHER/LITTLE BROTHER CEREMONY: SCRIPT MAGISTER: Pledge Brothers, the reading you are about to hear is well known and has been adapted to fit the situation at hand. There was a Pledge Brother who was just Initiated. He reviewed the footprints he had made throughout his pledgeship. As he looked back, he noticed that over all of the mountains and difficult places he had traveled, there was only one set of footprints. He turned to his Big Brother and said, There is something that I do not understand why is it that down the hills and over the smooth and easy paths you have walked by my side, but on the rough and difficult paths I have walked alone, as I see only one set of footprints? His Big Brother turned to him and said, It was while your pledgeship was easy that I walked at your side, but when the treading was hard and paths difficult, I knew that was the time you needed me most, so I carried you. This is why you only see one set of footprints. Big Brothers, please remove your Little s Blindfold (Wait for blindfolds to be removed) Pledge Brothers - please note the candles before you. The large White Candle represents the burning desire within every Sigma Chi s heart to uphold the high ideals of the fraternity, while the medium Blue Candle represents your pledge class. Brother, (last name of Big Brother) please light your candle and stand in front of your Little Brother. The Big Brother should walk around his Little Brother and light his own candle from the large white candle on the table. He should stand in front of his Little Brother facing him (away from the table). This is done one at a time until all of the Big Brothers have completed this step. When finished, each Big Brother, one at a time, extends his hand to shake, and offers congratulations. Finally, when this is completed, each Big Brother should light his Little Brother s candle, one at a time, counter clockwise from the first Big Brother to the last (much like a Wave being done at an athletic event). The Magister must wait until all candles have been illuminated.

Big Brothers, please raise your right hand and repeat after me: I, state your full name ** promise to work on building Sigma Chi Brotherhood ** with my little brother continuously ** through pledgeship and during the active and alumni years to come ** and I am committed to develop a friendship ** of love, inspiration and learning ** for the betterment of the brotherhood ** and the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi ** I say these words in all sincerity ** in the name of Sigma Chi. Big Brothers, you may put your hands down. (The Magister now addresses all of the Little Brothers) Little Brothers, raise your right hand and repeat after me: I, state your full name ** am determined to learn and grow * through my pledgeship and life as a Sigma Chi ** I will strive diligently* to obtain the knowledge ** my Big Brother bestows on me ** not only by his words* but through his example as a true Sigma Chi ** I say these words in all sincerity ** as a Pledge Brother of the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi. You may put your hands down. Brothers and Pledge Brothers, the obligations you have committed yourselves to are serious. You have dedicated both time and effort to developing true Sigma Chi Brotherhood. Pledge Brothers, remember that your Big Brother is your friend and guide into our brotherhood. Take advantage of this opportunity to build a lifelong bond. BIG BROTHER: In Hoc Signo Vinces! *This ceremony was created for the California State San Bernardino chapter by Brothers Steve R. Klemroth and Greg Saks in Spring 1989, and revised by Chris Ahearn and Bill Johnson in Fall 1989.

Example letter to parents Tuesday, March 10, 2009 Mr. & Mrs West Spokane, WA Dear (Name of parents): Sincerely, Our brotherhood is pleased and gratified that your son has chosen Sigma Chi as the fraternity with which he hopes to affiliate. As Pledge Educator of the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity, I want you to know about your son's pledgeship and our expectations of him. In choosing to pledge Sigma Chi, your son has voluntarily taken on certain obligations and responsibilities. These responsibilities have a definite purpose: making him a better man, further developing his character and personality, and of great importance, of respecting those teachings you have instilled within him - of which, we recognize in him. May I further explain the purpose of the pledging period by presenting to you the objectives of Sigma Chi from your son's pledge manual, The Norman Shield (which he will take and read on his journey): To cultivate and maintain the high ideals on which Sigma Chi was founded: Friendship, Justice and Learning. To foster and preserve high academic standards. To train the undergraduate in leadership responsibility and instill the idea of good citizenship. To take inspiration from the White Cross of Sigma Chi and follow the principles outlined by our Founders to a life of fulfillment. To stimulate participation in college programs and to develop close cooperation between Sigma Chi membership and college officials, faculty, and other student organizations. To provide a helping hand of brotherhood for the achievement of purposeful living, both in the college community and in the years that follow. My responsibilities and duties are centered about the planning and implementation of the above objectives through our Preparation For Brotherhood program. My primary responsibility in this office will be acting as a teacher, counselor, and mentor for the pledge class and your son. Please feel free to flip through his Norman Shield whenever possible so that you may gain a broader understanding of his pledgeship. Also, please contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns about your son or his Sigma Chi experience. I would also like to extend an invitation to stop by our chapter house whenever the opportunity arises. We all look forward to meeting you. Magister (Pledge Educator) of Sigma Chi

I expect you to cultivate your social side, to endeavor to discover and use qualities and talents which may lie hidden in you; to make use of the many opportunities which I have provided to enrich your life. I AM YOUR FRATERNITY!

WEEK 2 CHECKLIST

WEEK 2 MEETING: ORDER OF OPERATIONS Formal Opening Call to order Visit from Chapter Advisor/s Purpose: to introduce themselves and what they do. To conduct the True Colors Workshop. Note: True Colors Workshop may be found later in this week s material. MAGISTER SESSION Quiz On their own sheet of paper, have them answer the questions from their printouts. Leaders You Admire Note: Refer to the self titled sheet following. Founder: Isaac M. Jordan Note: Refer to the self titled sheet following. The Founding of Sigma Chi Note: Refer to the self titled sheet following. The Jordan Standard Note: Refer to the self titled sheet following.

LEADERS YOU ADMIRE Needed Players: Facilitator Pledges involved Needed Materials: (Large) White Board or a pad of paper (Large Newsprint Pad) Dry Erase Marker or a Fat Tip Marker respectably Logistics: Facilitator directs the pledges to come up with as many examples for the current exercise. There are three. In the first exercise divide the white board into two columns (or have two separate sheets of paper) Title the first column (sheet), Leaders of the Past. Title the second column (sheet), Leaders of the Present. Ask each pledge to call out leaders from each column to include on the list. As leaders are called, write down the reason why they would follow them. A good goal is to have 7-10 in each list Discussion: Is there any disagreement on a leader up on this list? If so, why? If there is any disagreement, have them take note on how leaders can be perceived differently among people of opposing beliefs. Are there any commonalities among each of these leaders? If so, what? Have them turn to Styles of Leadership Brief the list of styles and ask them to, if they can, identify the leaders on the list with an essential style. If there are any patterns visible (such as all leaders on the list are viewed as delegator, have them take note on it and ask them if they have any ideas on why.

Discussion: What type of leader are you most? Is there any style better than the other? Is there any style seen/used more than another? What does it mean to be a follower? Is a follower a leader too? How so/why? Most likely, there will be no followers on the board. If in order to be a leader, you must have followers, who were theirs (referring to the list)? Dry the board after the discussion or grab a new sheet. Title it Characteristics of a Good Leader. Pledges take turns announcing Characteristics of a Good Leader. Write each down on the paper as they are called. There are no repeats allowed There is no intermingling or discussion during this Try to get at least 10 Discussion: Are there any disagreements among this list? If so, why? Having read about each of our founders, do you think they embodied these characteristics? Do you embody these characteristics? Do you struggle to embody any of these characteristics? Do you need to embody each of these characteristics to be a good leader? How can we act on these characteristics? Give examples. Are these characteristics embodied in our fraternity? Give examples. Do any of these characteristics stand out to you? Why? Have them turn to Leadership Do not read it but acknowledge it and ask them to read over it if they would like. Take note of the additional words at the bottom of the sheet

describing skills of a leader and essential elements of leadership, ask them if they too, should be added to the list. Have them turn to A Parable and read. A PARABLE: This is a story about four men named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody Could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn t do it. Everybody, then, blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done. Discussion: Effective Delegation What do you think this parable encompasses? Why did nothing get done? What can we do to make sure this doesn t happen in our fraternity? Are we doing a good job? Have you noticed where this has happened before? Do you have a good example where this has been avoided? In what sort of organization or group? Why do some leaders hesitate to delegate responsibility? What can we do as a leader to delegate responsibly? To know what to delegate and to know who to delegate to (by knowing your base in order to acknowledge their individual strengths and uniqueness). At the bottom of the page A Parable is Effective Delegation. Though you do not need to read it, make them aware of it so that they may read it later.

FOUNDERS DISCUSSION Purpose: The discussion on the founders is one of the most important aspects of learning about Sigma Chi as they are integral to everything about Sigma Chi. These Discussion questions are not even a minimum. Skip some or add others if desired. It can get repetitive every week, so try your best to mix up the discussion. Discussion: What was he like? What qualities did he possess that are important? How would Sigma Chi be different without his influence in the founding of our Ritual and of Sigma Chi? Who here can relate to him? How so? Give examples. Does anyone you know remind you of him? How sow? Give Examples.

THE FOUNDING OF THE SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY Purpose: The discussion on our founding can lead into many themes as you see fit. It fits really well under the theme of ambitious purposes, but also of justice and friendship. Discussion: With respect to the break from Delta Kappa Epsilon, what caused the difference of opinion among the members of DKE? What was the Erodelphian Society? So what if their candidate had no poetic ability; he was still a DKE? Were the founders served unjustly? Was true friendship found among tall members of DKE? What happened with the Founding of the new fraternity? Who was the seventh member who joined the group? Why is his entrance to the new fraternity important? Who designed the badge of the fraternity? What was the purpose of the fraternity? What is the purpose of Sigma Chi today? Are the purposes and practices of your chapter consistent with the founders? If so, how?

Logistics: THE JORDAN STANDARD Have a pledge recite the introductory paragraph. For now, ignore the rest. Now have a discussion on it. What do these opening paragraphs have to do with your chapter today? How are these paragraphs important to the meaning and purpose of the Jordan Standard? Take your time and read each individual part, discussing each along the way. What is the importance of each line to the message of the Jordan Standard. Why is this line included in the Jordan Standard? Do you agree with this Standard and follow its meaning? After all are read. Which of the seven standards of manhood do you struggle with most and what do you do to actively achieve it. How will you continue to fit these standards into your life before Initiation? During? After Initiation? After College? During Retirement or old age? What do theses standards mean when taken as a whole? In what ways do they relate to Fraternity life? Obligation? Commitment? Are they important when taken individually? How does it change when taken as a whole?

STYLES OF LEADERSHIP There are many styles of leadership. No one is right or wrong, just different. The following is a list of the most common styles: PARTICIPATORY: Leader includes followers in decision making and other processes. CHARISMATIC Leader is well-liked by follower and has much influence in the organization. DELEGATORY: Leader often shares responsibilities with follower DEMOCRATIC: Leader uses the opinion of the majority of the group when making decisions and when delegating responsibility. FOLLOWERSHIP: An important component of leadership- ironically- is the concept of followership. In order to be an effective leader, one must not only understand what it means to lead, but how to follow. Leaders rely on expertise and knowledge of many advisers. Therefore, it s very important to never assume the leader is more important than the follower; indeed, without the follower, there would be no leader.

LEADERSHIP Leadership means different things to different people. A definition usually depends on the perspectives, personalities, philosophies, values, and professions of those who define it. In its most basic form, leadership is defined as the art of moving others to want to struggle for shared aspirations. Therefore, a leader is an individual who possesses the ability to encourage, motivate, and/or influence others. Because of the multitude of venues in which leaders are found, what constitutes leadership varies a great deal (Kouzes/Posner, pp ). A common misconception is that one must be in a n elected or appointed position of leadership in order to be a leader. Some of the most influential and dynamic leaders were never in a leadership position Mahatma Gandhi is a popular example. It is truly one s ability to put together the right set of characteristics and abilities to be able to create and communicate meaning, genuinely care about people communicate clearly and honestly, be aware of the larger context of situations, and foster relationships with others, that determines his or her leadership capacity (Scholtes, pp ). Although there is no definite set of skills/characteristics an individual must have to be a leader (as our list would suggest), here are some that are essential for the relationshipbuilding critical to any leader: ACTIVE LISTENING DELEGATION PERSISTENCE CONSCIENTIOUSNESS EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION CONSISTENCY A few essential elements of leadership a leader must keep in mind in his role are: RELATIONSHIP BUILDING GOAL SETTING DELEGATION OF RESPONSIBILITY TEAM BUILDING CREATING/COMMUNICATING A VISION DECISION-MAKING EMPOWERING ORGANIZATION MEMBERS

A PARABLE This is a story about four men named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. General Guidelines to follow in order to become an effective delegator: 1. CONFIDENCE - Believe in the volunteer (the delegated). Take the time to determine the interests and skills of your members. 2. UNDERSTANDING- Always delegate a task that can be accomplished. Be sure to give the volunteer any necessary training, materials, or other resources. Also be sure that the responsibility is well defined. 3. KNOWLEDGE- Show the volunteer the value of the task. Take time to explain why the task needs to be done. If the individual believes the task is important, he will be more diligent in accomplishing it. 4. AVAILABILITY- When you delegate, be available consistently during the project to give support, advice, and encouragement, but do not attempt to take over 5. APPRECIATION- When the task is accomplished, be sure to sincerely thank the individual. This can be done any way you see fit to do so.

IFC PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS In the past, 80% of fraternity and sorority members were required to attend four educational areas of programming (Alcohol/Drugs, Sexual Assault, Hazing, Diversity). The new structure will still require members to go to educational programming, however the percentages and number of programs required has changed depending on the class status of a member. Listed below is the new structure of educational programming that will go into effect Fall The educational programming categories will remain the same with the exception of hazing which has been split into two different levels. The categories are: 1. Alcohol/Drugs 2. Diversity 3a. Hazing 1 3b. Hazing 2 4. Sexual Assault 95% of Freshman/New Members must complete Alcohol/Drugs, Diversity, Hazing 1, and Sexual Assault 95% of Sophomores must complete Hazing 2 and one program of their choosing within the required categories. Note: Not all Sophomores need to complete the same program. They may individually select what program they would like to attend. 95% of Jr s and Sr s must complete one program of their choosing within the required categories. Note: Not all Jr s and Sr s need to complete the same program. They may individually select what program they would like to attend. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, chapters will not be allowed to complete the required educational programs informally. Informal programming refers to all programs set-up by individual chapters and hosted by individual chapters. Note: Chapters are encouraged to host additional programming on any topic of their choosing; however such programming will not fulfill the requirements outlined above! The task force has designed a new format that sets up 6 Programming Weeks to be spread over the course of one year; the exact timeline each chapter has to complete the programming requirements. Each week will give chapters ample opportunities to complete educational programming requirements. Chapters will be given all programming prior to the academic year and will also receive posters at the first Presidents meeting that will have the dates, topics, and room numbers for where all programs will be held. In addition to the programming weeks outlined above, there will also be at least three large scale educational programs in the area of Alcohol/Drugs, Sexual Assault, and Hazing offered on an annual basis. Additionally, there will be a unique opportunity for those chapters who like to plan ahead to accomplish some of their programming through an Outdoor Adventure Format. As part of the educational programming weeks above,

ADCAPS and the Outdoor Recreation Center have teamed up to design two outdoor adventure trips a semester that will have the educational components required above built into the trip. Space will be limited and open to Chapters on a first come first serve basis. There will also be a minimal charge associated with each trip. In order to have a better participation tracking method and programming effectiveness data, the taskforce decided to implement a new tracking system. From this point forward, all members present at educational programming sessions will complete a brief survey at the completion of the program. This system will take the place of card readers and the current forms each chapter is required to submit. The student led Programming Task Force spent a significant amount of time considering what could be done to make educational programming better. Through combined student efforts, it is our hope that educational programming will be more enjoyable and beneficial for the Greek community. 91 WEEK 4 MEETING: ORDER OF OPERATIONS Formal Opening Call to order Visit from Chapter Scholarship Chair Purpose: to introduce the scholarship program and the purpose of scholastic achievement. MAGISTER SESSION Quiz and Collection: On their own sheet of paper, have them answer the questions from their printouts. Make sure to collect their Academic Assessment Sheet and essay. The Sigma Chi Purpose: Learning This discussion needs to be a little deeper than how they are most likely going to answer. Learning does not only entitle knowledge of facts, but of personal growth like attributes. For example, patience is a learned attribute and must be consistently learned throughout life. A virtue is learned and never quite fulfilled. If you stop learning to achieve an ideal or virtue in every aspect of your life, every relationship, every conversation, every action, how are you to even remotely attain it? What is the definition of learning? Why should people learn? Do you ever get to a point when you know everything? Why do people go to college? How will Sigma Chi supplement your experience in college? What is the difference between wisdom and knowledge? Ask them if anyone wants to share their essays. Return them if they need. Founders: Thomas Cowan Bell; Daniel William Cooper Ask the following questions collectively or separately for each founder. Again, try to mix it up and add other questions. This discussion may be feeling stale by now, and most likely will next week. What was he like?

Insignia of Sigma Chi What qualities did he possess that are important? How would Sigma Chi be different without his influence in the founding of our Ritual and of Sigma Chi? Who here can relate to him? How so? Give examples. Does anyone you know remind you of him? How sow? Give Examples. Look at the badge, seal, coat of arms, colors and flag. What do these represent to the public? What do these symbols (and specifics on these symbols) mean to you? What do you think these symbols (and specifics on these symbols) mean to members of Sigma Chi? Why are these symbols important to the Fraternity? Read My Badge, page 43 in the Norman Shield Motto/Roman Heritage What is our motto? What is the English translation of the motto? Where did the motto come from? How does the motto relate to the Fraternity? Why did this statement inspire our Founders to adopt it as our motto? What does the motto mean to you as an individual? The Sigma Chi Creed Have a pledge recite the Creed from memory and discuss it with the following guidelines. What is a Creed? What does the Sigma Chi Creed say? Does it relate to the Jordan Standard? How? Does it relate to the Fraternity? How? How can you interpret this in your life Should we agree to live by it? Assignments and Announcements Note: Refer to the self titled sheet following.

Questions on Leadership: DEAD POETS SOCIETY Showing of the Dead Poets Society: Provide Popcorn and Drinks If it is a larger Brotherhood event, Brotherhood funding should be used. Talk to Brotherhood Chair and Quaestor. What are some of the qualities exemplified through this film? How so? What is the significance of the classroom scene in which Keating instructs the students to rip pages from their text? What is his point in doing this? Why was it easier for Keating to break through to the students of Welton than to the administrators, faculty and staff? Archimedes uses the analogy of trying to find a lever long enough to move his world. Keating has four levers students, parents, faculty, and administrators. How can he reach out to these groups to make change and progress at Welton? What does Keating do well as a leader? What are Keating s downfalls as a leader? Keating was able to distinguish poetry over all other of the student s pursuits. How does this affect the students? Was this good, bad, or indifferent? Keating provokes defiance into his students without providing the social discourse for true change. What is the effect of this when the students start acting on their defiance? The students participate in a number of defiant acts including forging a signature on a letter, throwing things from the school roof, and disrupting a school assembly. How do these acts relate back to Keating s teaching? Do these acts correlate with the social change Keating intended in his teaching? Keating recognizes that some of the students are taking their defiance too far. After the scene where Charlie stages a phone call from God, Keating confronts him. Charlie comes back with, What about sucking the marrow out of life? Keating responds, Sucking all the marrow out of life doesn t mean choking on the bone. Is Keating s message timely or too late? Keating was an inspirational leader to his students. But in the end what was the focus of attention, the work of great poet s or Keating himself? In Keating s teaching did he emphasize the meaning behind acting? What role has Keating played in this film?... That of a hero or a leader?
