3 The Greek Background The Philosophy of Religion AS Level Summer Induction Activities Please research and write a short essay describing the life and death of the Greek philosopher Socrates. It should be about 400 words long. In about 300 words explain the reasons Socrates did not try to escape his punishment and say whether you agree or disagree with his decision. The Biblical Background Please research the difference between God as a creator and God as a sustainer. Please write words altogether to explain these two terms. Resources As this is an independent study task you will be expected to find the material for yourself but there are many books, encyclopaedias and resources on the internet to help you. The school library and/or the public libraries are good places to go if you are stuck. Remember: Wikipedia is not always accurate.

4 AS/A2 Philosophy: Additional Course Information The total grade for your A2 is made up of a combination of the 4 exams. AS Philosophy 50% 25% AS Ethics 50% 25% A2 Philosophy 25% A2 Ethics 25% In your first lesson you will have been given an information booklet that tells you about each course, the topics studied and how the course is marked and assessed. You will get a topic title page for each topic that you study. You will get two Philosophy essays to do each term as well as an assessment essay in any sixth form assessment weeks. The marks that you get for these essays will enable you to keep track of your progress. You will get a predicted grade and a target grade. There is no course work in this subject but 2 exams at the end of each year. These exams consist of essays. If you miss work or deadlines it is important that you catch up otherwise you will be at a disadvantage in the exam. The course percentages are roughly as follows U under 40% E 40-49% D 50-59% C 60-69% B 70-71% A 80-89% A* 90+%
