PREPARE TO WRITE ESSAY - 3 CHOICES BELOW/over These topics go back to the previous unit [chapters 6 and 7] and also connect to chapter 8. 3A. Turn in a detailed OUTLINE for your essay [5] (you can use the form on the back) you will get that back to. 3b. [aka. Assignment 8e] Write an essay in class [25] (you can use any materials you want EXCEPT do not prewrite the essay) on TUESDAY DEC 18 IN CLASS. {8 30 pos / 8e [the essay part only] 25 pos} 8e choices. A) In the 1600s, there was a great debate about the nature and role of GOD and, subsequently, what that meant for HUMAN NATURE and our ability to know TRUTH (epistemology). Discuss the DIFFERENCES (and reasons for those differences) in the basic philosophical outlook of BLAISE PASCAL, the FRENCH PHILOSOPHES, and the SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT. It would be expected that you quote Pascal and at least one other thinker, using appropriate documents from the Quest or Sources. Over for two more choices.

Compare and contrast the ways THREE of these nations were governed and their successes and or failures: FRANCE from 1645 to 1789 PRUSSIA from 1648 to 1789 RUSSIA under Peter the Great and through Catherine the Great BRITAIN from 1688 (Glorious Revolution) up to the 1790s THE OTTOMAN TURKS from the late 1600s to late 1700s C) Compare and contrast the ideas, methods and effect of THREE of these people as DISSENTERS who challenged and changed their society.
