2 ACADEMIC YEAR: REGULATION CBCS PART B QUESTIONS 1. Give an account of the experiences of the NRI s with special reference to THE X=X+1 SYNDROME INTRODUCTION: THE X=X+1 SYNDROME is written by R.K.Narayan. He is one of the famous Indian writers of the modern time. Some of his novels are Swami and friends, The Bachelor of Arts, The English Teacher, The Malgudi Days and the Guide. He is also wellknown for his short stories that portray the present scenario in the most humorous way. This short story portrays a typical illness that is faced by an Indian who goes aboard after graduating from big institutes like the IITs or IIMs. The protagonist s Ambition: A typical NRI is from middle class background. From his school days the emigrant s sole ambition is to join IIT or IIM. The whole family supports him and he achieves his goal. His next goal is to get a degree from a U.S. University for which he has to get an F-1 visa. After getting his visa he bids a tearful farewell to his family, promising himself to return to his homeland someday. He keeps writing to his family regularly about the new world. The Youngman graduates after 2 years and starts hunting for a job with a company which not only gives him a job but also the green card. In this second stage, he gets a job with a U.S firm and he thrilled to get a salary in four-digit dollars. He pushes to the back of his mind the idea of returning to India in the immediate future. His marriage life: The next stage is his setting down with a family. His parents make few proposals from girl s parents. After interviewing the girls he chooses the one who could easily be Americanized. The newlyweds return to the U.S and the boy explains to the Americans the idea of arranged marriage. Then they get fully involved in the usual activities of NRI-dinners, shopping, bhajans etc... The wife at first misses her family, and then gradually forgets them in the comforts. Now and then, the topic of returning to India crops up but is brushed aside by the NRI. Mother-in-law comes to take care of the new-born babe. The author sarcastically says that every NRI wants his child to be an American citizen. 3 ACADEMIC YEAR: REGULATION CBCS In the next stage, as the days pass by, with every comfort near him the NRI feels uneasy. The craze for the exotic electronic goods, cars, and routine entertainment fades away. This, the author describes as the mid-life crisis. The Indian slowly realizes that he is sidelined by younger and more aggressive Americans. He starts retreating into the values and culture he himself had imbibed. Conclusion: With the generation gap looming large he starts thinking of returning to India. He realizes that the facilities available to start a business venture are far below his expectation. But by the time he decides he finds his people are no longer there. 2. Give a brief summary of Martin Luther King s speech. I have a Dream. INTRODUCTION: In 1963 Martin Luther king delivered a historic speech. The meeting was attended by a large gathering of 2, 50,000 Americans of many faiths, races and creeds. In his speech King made it clear that Negroes wanted equality and freedom. DIFFICULT SITUATION TO NEGROES IN U.S: America became an independent nation one hundred years ago. But the Americans Negro is still not free. He finds himself an exile in his own land. He is subjected to racial discrimination. The white men of America have refused to grant him the rights of life and liberty. But the America Negro is determined to get his citizenship rights. There will be neither rest nor calm in America until the Negro is granted is granted his citizenship rights. METHODS OF KING TO NEGROES FOR FIGHTING FOR CIVIL RIGHTS: Martin Luther King advises his Negro to follow the path of non-violence in their struggle. They must be free from the feelings of bitterness and hatred. They must conduct their struggle on the high level of dignity and discipline. They must not consider all the white men as their enemies because many white men are in sympathy with them. Negroes must be free from despair and continue to work with faith. KING VISUALIZES THE FUTURE OF AMERICA: Martin Luther king has a dream that the white men and black men in America will develop a feeling of brotherhood among them. He has a dream that oppression and injustice will be removed. He has a dream that there will be no racial discrimination in America. He firmly believes that Negroes will be free at least. 5 ACADEMIC YEAR: CBCS-2012 REGULATION ULE 10- GENERAL ENGISH UNIT-3 Type :100% Theory PART-A 1. How does Satan compare Heaven and Hell? Satan and his followers are shocked at their fall from Heaven. Satan was an Arch- Angel. In Heaven he and his followers had enjoyed the celestial light. But in Hell they have darkness. Whatever God decides is final. Satan feels that it is good to be far away from God. Satan bids farewell to the happy fields of heaven where joy dwells forever. He greets horror sand the infernal world. He asks the deepest hell to receive its new possessor. His mind cannot be changed by place or time. God defeated Satan by using thunder as a weapon. In Satan's view, the only difference between god and himself was a thunder. In Hell they will be free. God will not drive them out of Hell. In Hell they will reign secure in. Satan's choice it is better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. 2. Describe Satan's reflections on life in Hell? Satan is shocked at his fall from Heaven. There is celestial light in Heaven but there is eternal darkness in Hell. Satan says that it is good to be far away from God. God defeated Satan by using thunder as a weapon. In Satan's view the only difference between God and himself was thunder. In Hell they will be free. God will not drive them out of Hell. In Hell they will reign secure. In Satan's choice it is better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. Satan appeals to the other Angels who were also thrown into Hell, not to be astonished at their fall Hell was an unhappy place. He wanted his followers to share what they had- be it hell or one more attempt to regain what they had lost or what more was to be lost in hell. They should stand united in whatever they do. 3. What are the skills required for an efficient sales talk as seen from Satan's speech? A sales person must be able to make a good impression on the listeners first. He must speak in an appealing manner to make a good impression on the listeners and sell his product. He must study the mind of the people who listen to him. He must also have a thorough knowledge of his product and must be able to explain the salient features of the product. He must also talk highly about his product. And all the time his aim must be on selling his product to as many people as possible. Satan has all the qualities required of a good leader. As the leader of the fallen angels, he is able to make a good impression on his followers. He has an aim and he takes his aim over to his followers. He encourages them and impresses on them the need to win over a god. 4. How does the poet depict the life of happy man in his poems ''Ode to Solitude? The Happy man inherts a few acres of land from his parents. He is not ambitious. Therefore He is free from worries. His cows give him cool shade in summer. He gets his food from his fields.his flocks of sheep give him a cool shade in summer. In winter they serve as fuel for his fire. His always in perfect health. He enjoys sound sleep at nights. 6 ACADEMIC YEAR: CBCS-2012 REGULATION After leading secluded life, He wants to pass away leaving no trace behind him. He likes to die quietly. 5. Comment on the poem ''ode to solitude''? In this poem the language is simple, musical, and photographic. Here there is no great action, and the poem's movement is dreamy and sweet, just like a sweet dream. The point of view is romantic and at the same time it is universal because at the age of capitalism everyone wishes to live a quiet peaceful life in the country side far away from the noisy cities. It is also possible that the poet is calling for conserving nature and farms as sources of happiness, health, peace, and self-contained economy. The theme of the poem makes it universal, despite that the conclusion is not open. PART-B 1.How does Satan prove to be a great and inspiring speaker? Introduction: John Milton was a great English writer of the 17th Century. Milton was also a great believer in liberty. He was awarded a BA in 1629 and an MA in In 1638 a famous poem by Milton called Lycidas was published. Tragically in 1652 Milton went blind. However in 1667 his great work Paradise Lost was first printed. It deals with the rebellion of Adam and Eve against God and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. In 1671 another work by Milton, Paradise Regained was published. John Milton died on 8 November 1674 aged 65. Satan's fall from heaven: Satan is shocked his fall from heaven into hell. He is the lost arch b-angel. In heaven he and his followers had enjoyed the celestial light. But in hell they have darkness. But gods do what he wanted. Satan and his followers were helpless. Whatever god decides is final. It was good to be far away from god. In reason both God and Satan were equal but force had made God supreme above his equals Satan comparison of Heaven and Hell: Satan and his followers are shocked at their fall from Heaven. Satan was an Arch- Angel. In Heaven he and his followers had enjoyed the celestial light. But in Hell they have darkness. Whatever God decides is final. What is Pope's idea of the happy man? (Or) Why does pope long for a life of solitude? Introduction: Alexander Pope (21 May May 1744) was an 18th-century English poet. He is best known for his satirical verse, as well as for his translation of Homer. He is the second-most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare. It's also a poem written in his beloved heroic couplets. The advantages of a rural life: The poem 'solitude' brings out Pope's love of solitude. It also reveals his idea of the happy man. The happy man inherts a few acres of land from his parents. He is not ambitious. Therefore he his free from worries. His cows give him milk. He gets his food from his fields. His flocks of sheep give him wool for his clothes. His trees give him cool shade in summer. In winter they serve as fuel for his fire. His few needs are amply provided for. He is always in perfect health. He enjoys in perfect health. He enjoys sound sleep at nights. He spends his spare time in rest and sweet recreation. He finds ample time for study and mediation. He lives a quiet, carefree and virtuous life in his own remote village. His solitary life gives him happiness and peace of mind. Pope's long for life of solitude: Pope wants to lead such life of solitude. He wants to lead a quiet life unnoticed by others. After leading a secluded life, he wants to pass away leaving no trace behind him. He likes to die quietly. He does not want others to mourn his death. He does not wish to have even a tombstone on his grave. He wants to go to his grave 'unwept, and unsung' Conclusion: In this poem ode to solitude pope conveys his views on an ordinary man's rural life.
