3 Advocacy/Mission Amy Voris DNP, AOCN, CNS CP-3 WHAT IS IT? The American Cancer Society (ACS) has long been a champion in cancer research. Through the funding of research by the ACS millions of lives have been saved either directly, through the discovery of new treatments, or indirectly by discover of ways to prevent cancer from occurring. Thousands of lives have been saved by this research which began in the 1950 s. Through enrolling people into these studies and observing their lifestyles and habits the ACS was the first to link smoking with lung cancer and the connection between environmental pollutants and heart and lung disease. This knowledge has saved countless lives. Some of the largest studies the ACS has done are the cancer prevention studies (CPS). CP-3 stands for Cancer Prevention-3. Three because it is the third such study the ACS has conducted. The first study, CP-1 was begun in 1959 and enrolled one million men and women into the study. The study was looking at those things in our lifestyles which may lead to cancer. This was important because we know many things which can either increase or decrease our risk of getting cancer. In 1982 CPS-2 was started and still going today. It had approximately 1.2 million people in the study. This study is looking for those things which have led to the death of those persons in the study. Looking at causes of death and the lifestyles of the person who died can tell us much about prevention and those things that increase or decrease a person risk of dying from cancer. CPS-3 was started in 1992 and currently has 185,000 people in the study but the goal is 300,000. This study is looking at nutrition and those things in our diets which may increase or decrease our risks of getting cancer. Some of the most frequently asked questions are: Can I be part of the study and will they do anything to hurt me? If you are a person between the ages of 30-65, have never had a diagnosis of cancer and you are willing to be part of a long term study (for the 20 years or more) you are eligible to participate in the study. When you first join the study you will be asked to fill out a survey about your lifestyle and health habits, a measurement of waist will be taken and a small blood sample will be taken. Thereafter the ACS will mail you (or you may go online and complete it) annual surveys asking questions about your diet, lifestyles, and health status. It is just that easy! As of right now, the ACS is greatly behind their goal of 300,000 people by this summer, but you can make a difference. In Greene County during the month of May you will have several opportunities to be a part of this study. Please tell all of your friends how just a few minutes of their time and a tiny amount of blood can make the difference between many birthdays to come and no birthdays. We must be the champions that ACS is looking for to spread the word about the study, to encourage everyone we know to be a part of the study, and most importantly to be a part of the study ourselves. Let us not let another birthday candle go unit.

4 Survivor Testimony Alisha Sampson ~ married to Ted Sampson with one child, Alexis Sampson It is hard to believe that it has been a year since it was discovered that I had cancer I scheduled an appointment with my OB/GYN because I was having very sharp pains. I had experienced this pain before as I had a cyst removed in Between the time that I had scheduled the appointment and the actual appointment, the pain had subsided so I almost called to cancel it. There was so much going on at work and my thoughts were if the pain was gone, I must be ok. One of my co-workers insisted that I not cancel the appointment and to avoid an argument, I told myself that I would cancel it later that day. Well, God had a different plan for me. The day got away from me and by the time I remembered to call and cancel the appointment, the office was closed. During my exam, I knew something was wrong by the look on my doctor s face and then he said, We need to schedule you for surgery, immediately. He explained that I had what he thought at the time was a very large cyst. My surgery was scheduled for April 4, The only thing I remember is waking up with my husband by my side, tears filled in his eyes, holding my hand and telling me that I had cancer. Of course, I was still somewhat under the anesthesia so I didn t really understand what was going on and of course thinking that this was all a dream or I must be hallucinating from the medicine. My doctor removed the cyst and the ovary that it was attached to during the surgery. So I assumed that everything was going to be ok, I was going to be able to go back to work and live life as normal. That was definitely a fantasy. I think I was still trying to grasp the seriousness of what had happened to me, what I had been through what my body was going through. The Oncologist recommended that I have chemo treatments to be sure that everything was gone and that the cancer had not leaked into my body. The chemo treatments were very long and draining. I received three treatments which required me to stay in the hospital for four days and was constantly hooked up to a machine during the entire process. I quickly became thankful, for what I felt like was an eternity, when I heard stories of other patient s time in the hospital. Although I had my family and many friends were there to support me through this time in my life, there was never a time that my husband was not by my side. He curled his 6 plus body on the cot legs hanging off, ate hospital food, and was at my beckon call all with a smile. I am so very thankful for him and everyone who helped us make it through. But most importantly and certainly not least, I have to give the utmost thanks and praise to my God and the Angels that he put it my life If not for the grace of God, there go I. Always remember to be still and know that God has perfect timing; never early, never late. Sometimes silence is best; it takes a little patience and Faith, but it is well worth the wait to hear the Whisper of God. Life is too short to keep important words like, I love you, locked in our hearts. Let your family know how much you care because tomorrow is never ever promised.
