6 DISSERTATION ABSTRACT We have it on the authority of Aristotle that reason is the best thing in us ( EN 10.7, 1177a20). This idealization of rationality permeates his account of eudaimonia, which he identifies with the human good. In Aristotle s view, living a human life well requires the unique practical application of rationality, of which only humans are capable. My dissertation investigates Aristotle s substantive view on practical rationality, with a focus on the psychological processes that contribute to intelligent human actions. An intelligently planned human action has its origin in deliberation ( bouleusis ). The goal of the first chapter is to reconstruct Aristotle s account of deliberation. I argue that deliberation is a rigorous decision process that generally unfolds into four stages: (1) positing a provisional goal, (2) constructing a set of possible alternatives by analysis, (3) identifying the best alternative from the set by evaluation, (4) forming an intention to do the first action towards the achievement of the goal. There are modern imprints in Aristotle s theory since he conceives of deliberation as a complex process of reasoning and confines it to non-routine, challenging cases of decision-making. Nonetheless, his theory is teleological and decidedly ancient in its recognition of the primacy of the goal in directing how we deliberate. Deciding what to do often requires that we confront the question, Which is preferable or better between two or more alternatives. In Topics 3.1-5, a text widely acknowledged as the inaugural treatment of the logic of preference, Aristotle articulates a set of formal principles to guide our preference-ranking. W hile scholars pay historical homage to Aristotle, their evaluations of his treatment of the logic of preference are generally not positive. T he last, and only, attempt to vindicate Aristotle s theory of preference-ranking was made over three decades ago by anchoring the theory on what is, at present, an obscure formal framework. The second chapter addresses the need for an up-to-date study and reassessment of Aristotle s preference-ranking principles. In it, I elucidate Aristotle s preference-ranking rules and state the conditions under which they would be valid. Despite significant differences both in scope and methodology between the Aristotelian and modern systems, I argue that the description inaugural treatment of preference logic comfortably and accurately applies to Topics 3. It might be thought that the so-called Humean doctrine of instrumental reason can already be found in philosophical writings well before Hume s famous assertion: reason is and ought to be the slave of the passions. In a highly controversial passage in EN 6.12, Aristotle appears to affirm just this Humean division of labor, writing, virtue ( aretē ) makes the goal right, and practical wisdom ( phronesis ) makes what leads to the goal right (1144a7-9). In chapter 3, I examine the question of whether or not Aristotle could intend this position given his views about the role of reason in directing action and choice ( prohairesis ). Here, I am interested in the notion of rationality as consisting of a series of norms that we frequently deviate from, and I seek to elucidate what these norms would be from the Aristotelian perspective. 6
7 The concept of reason has historically been misused as a political tool to justify the subordination and marginalization of individuals who are thought to be deficient in their reasoning capacity. Indeed, Aristotle notoriously defends the subordination of women and individuals he calls natural slaves by citing their compromised decisional capacity as supporting evidence. He holds that the presence of the deliberative faculty ( to bouleutikon ) is not uniform across all members of the human species: It is completely absent in natural slaves and unauthoritative ( akuron ) in women ( Pol. 1.13, 1260a12). The objective of the final chapter is to reconstruct the decision procedures for these constitutively imperfect agents. My aim is neither to vindicate nor legitimize the morality of Aristotle s position. Rather, it is to answer the question of whether or not his theory of moral psychology consistently and coherently informs his views on the rationality of women and natural slaves. 7
