2 NUMINOUS: (adj.) /ˈnjuːmɨnəs/ having a mysterious, holy, or spiritual quality. Taken from the Latin Numen and used by some to describe the presence of a divinity. A powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed by awe that inspires an affirmative and mystical sense of the oneness of existence. The word was popularised in the early twentieth century by the German theologian Rudolf Otto in his influential book Das Heilige (1917; translated into English as The Idea of the Holy, 1923). According to Otto, the numinous experience combines the qualities of tremendum, which is the tendency to invoke fear and trembling, and of fascinans, the tendency to attract, fascinate and compel. The numinous experience has an integral quality, in that the person feels to be in communion with something wholly other. The numinous experience is inarticulate yet carries a strong and curious combination of illumination and authority and can lead in different cases to increasing interest in and incidence of the supernatural, brushes with the sacred, understanding of the holy, and sense of the transcendent.
