1 How Can I Prove that God Exists? Genesis 1:1 Introduction At one of the gatherings of the World Congress of Secular Humanism, Richard Dawkins (a world-renowned atheist) allowed an interview with Belief.net. During that interview, he was asked how he would respond to people that say the idea of God is intellectually satisfying. Listen to his reponse: Well, of course it is. Wouldn't it be lovely to believe in an imaginary friend who listens to your thoughts, listens to your prayers, comforts you, consoles you, gives you life after death, can give you advice? Of course it's satisfying, if you can believe it. But who wants to believe a lie? 1 In this quote, a renowned atheist has essentially asked a question that demands an answer. Is the existence of God provable to a scientist (or anyone else) who wants to go where the facts take him or her? My answer is: Yes! Of course. I wouldn t be a Christian if I didn t believe with all of my heart that God s existence is a reasonable belief. The belief that God exists is very reasonable that is, if someone is really open to the facts. But, it has been my experience that many atheists hold the belief that there is no God not for scientific reasons but for other reasons. Maybe there was something that happened early in their life that was incredibly painful or unjust and they rejected the notion that there is a God. Or, other atheists realize that if there is a God, then there just might be moral ramifications He might have does and don ts and many people don t want to hear that they are sinners in need of a Savior. So, let s spend our time this morning looking at proofs for God s existence. 1. Aren t We Supposed to Simply Accept God s Existence by Faith? a. Most certainly, we are to be people of faith! 1) Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 2) So, among every other thing we believe, our notion that God exists MUST be received by faith. But, what does that mean? b. Faith is not blindly believing something without any facts. 1) Scripture never presents faith that way. 2) Christians should, among all people, be captivated by truth. What is true and how can we know that it is true? After Jesus, the Savior we serve is the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6). 1

3) The truth doesn t scare us. It captivates our attention and we are in a pursuit of it. 4) So, what is faith? a) Faith is the gathering of facts that are true realizing that there are still unanswered questions. But, we act anyway. b) That s what the men and women of faith did in Hebrews 11. The men and women of this chapter had things that they knew to be facts. Where there were still unanswered questions, they trusted God enough to act. Faith fills in the empty spots. 5) Unbelievers are people of faith, too. a) Unbelievers parachute out of airplanes trusting that the shoot will open. b) They will drive on the roads today trusting other drivers to stay in their lane. c) There are ALWAYS unanswered questions that require faith. c. Which brings us to today s question: What facts are there that God exists, realizing that there will still remain unanswered questions, so that I can receive it by faith? 1) This is a HUGE conversation that could easily take a month of Sundays. There are also Christian intellects who are MUCH smarter than me who have tackled this question of God s existence wonderfully. 2) But, I like putting the cookies on the bottom shelf because that s about as high as I can reach. So, let s get started. 2. Some Proofs of God s Existence: a. Scriptural Proof 1) Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2) With our conviction that the Bible is our ultimate source of truth, this would and should be sufficient. But, God has graciously pointed to other proofs b. The First Cause Proof 1) Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2) Romans 1: For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 3) The night sky with its stars, planets, and much farther out, galaxies, nebula, and everything else declare God s glory. It s tells us that He s there! 4) Simply put, everything has a cause. a) Look at the Together We Grow banners here on the platform. b) Let me tell you how they got here they just appeared! I just came in one Sunday morning and they were up here. I asked everyone here at church who made them and not a single person knew anything about them. So, I am safely assuming that they just made themselves and showed up here all by themselves. c) You know that is absolutely ridiculous. Why? Because EVERYTHING has a cause. d) They are here because Rickey put them here. They exist because Katie Mantooth got some ideas from those of us on the Together We Grow Team and came up with this design and then sent her work off to a company that put her graphics on these banners. 2

e) EVERYTHING that exists has a cause! 5) That applies to our planet and universe as well. a) It is a completely logical question to ask: What is the cause? b) Some would say, The Big Bang occurred. c) Ok, so what caused the explosion of the big bang? Where did the matter come from? d) Ok, so what caused that? e) Ok, so what caused that? f) Eventually, regardless of what path you take, no matter how erroneous that path may be, you get back to the First Cause. 6) We submit that the very First Cause is God, a personal being that is beyond energy, space, time and matter. a) Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. c. The Fine-Tuning Proof 1) You can t help but look at the universe and realize that it is incredibly fine-tuned. a) It s not chaotic. It is incredibly predictable. b) In fact, it is so finely tuned that you can come up with a date one hundred years from today and we could calculate to the second at what time the sun s rays would come over the horizon. c) There are a boatload of numbers (constants) that must be true if the universe is to exist and life is to exist on this planet. Everything from the precise numbers for gravity, to the electromagnetic force (for atomic structure and chemical reactions), to the presence and distance of our sun from us, to the right mixture of ingredients in the air, and so much more. Everything is so finely tuned that some have said that the numbers that exist are sitting on a razor s edge. If any of these and many more factors moved ever so slightly, life could not exist. d) With evolution s explanation of a Big Bang, a monstrous explosion, we are surprised that they can believe that such an explosion would create such fine-tuning and predictability. Imagine collecting a bunch of car parts, putting them in a pile, and then throwing a stick of dynamite in the middle of it. How many times would you have to do that before it would form into a beautiful car that ran wonderfully? The odds are so astronomical that it is a statistical impossibility. e) But, the evolutionist would have to go further and say that you couldn t even start with the parts because even they acknowledge that matter is not eternal. There was a time when there was nothing. So, nothing exploded (who or what caused the explosion) and it created a finely-tuned universe. 2) As Christians, we realize that our universe is finely-tuned because Jesus created all things and is the one who keeps it running. a) Colossians 1: For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 3

b) Let s go back to the banners here on the platform. They exist so we could ask the question: What caused them? Where did they come from? That would lead us to the First Cause Proof. c) But, in the Fine-Tuning Proof, we could not only look at their existence but at the organization. The banners are in color but are done in such a way that there is a beautiful design. The banners aren t ripped but are nicely cut. So, we would look at the banners and say, That s finely-tuned. That certainly didn t just happen. There had to be someone who created that who was incredibly gifted. 3) Your eyes: a) Your eyes demonstrate beautifully the fine-tuning principle. b) There are a LOT of things that MUST be true if you are able to see. If ANY ONE of these things is not true, then you will be blind. c) You have a cornea at the front of the eye which acts like a window. d) Your pupil and iris determine how much of that light to let in. e) Your retina takes that light and turns it into signals that the brain can understand. f) Your optic nerve then carries those signals to the brain. g) Your brain has the ability to interpret those signals and convert them into thoughts that tell us what is in front of us. h) There are MANY other necessary parts of the eye such as the tear ducts that flush the eye to keep it clean and so many other things. The whole system shows clear evidence that it was finely tuned. i) Darwinian evolution cannot explain the fine-tuning of our eye-sight. Evolution states that what is inferior, weak, or unneeded will be weeded out by nature ( survival of the fittest ). But, if ANY one of the above things were missing, eyesight would be impossible and would have been weeded out. j) The eye itself testifies to the fact that there is a Creator that created eyesight with its numerous, complex components so that the first human, Adam, had perfect eye sight. His system was fine-tuned. 4) There is much more we could look at to illustrate this point but let s move to the 3 rd and final proof we will consider this morning d. The Moral Proof 1) Simply put, regardless of what time period you are in in world history or what spot on the planet you arrive at, there is a general consensus of what is right and wrong. a) If you show up to some tribe in the deepest parts of the Amazon jungle, go into one of their huts, grab something that belongs to them, and try to leave, you re probably not going to get far. They innately know that what you did was wrong, it was stealing, and you will suffer the consequences of your actions. b) If you show up to any city in our world, pull out a weapon, and take the life of an innocent citizen, you re going to suffer the consequences of that choice. Every society knows that murder is wrong. 2) There is a moral compass inside each person on planet earth that tells us that certain things are wrong. Where do we get this notion of morality? a) Romans 2: For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have 4

5 the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. b) This is saying that God has given every single person a conscience. They have a knowledge of right and wrong in their heart. c) That s why when you watch a high-profile court case on television, the camera is often aimed at the defendant. They know that when someone is guilty, their facial expressions will sometimes give them away. We are looking for those cues. 3) Darwinism cannot explain the conscience. It cannot explain how a common moral code is shared by all peoples of all times. 4) But, simply put, if all of mankind at all times has the same general moral code, you have to ask yourself the question: How did it get there and who or what put it there? a) The Bible makes it clear when it simply says that God has written the law upon our heart. We generally know right and wrong and often feel guilty when we do what is wrong. b) For there to be a moral law, there s got to be a moral law giver. We call Him God. Conclusion There are some important truths that come from knowing that God is real. He has revealed Himself in His Word. We must spend time reading, studying, and obeying it and getting to know and enjoy Him. He has called us to talk with Him in prayer. He will judge us one day so we had better be saved: o Acts 17: The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.
