1 Sat Jul 22, 2006 HO'OPONOPONO By Joe Vitale "Two years ago, I heard about a therapist in Hawaii who cured a complete ward of criminally insane patients--without ever seeing any of them. The psychologist would study an inmate's chart and then look within himself to see how he created that person's illness. As he improved himself, the patient improved. "When I first heard this story, I thought it was an urban legend. How could anyone heal anyone else by healing himself? How could even the best self-improvement master cure the criminally insane? It didn't make any sense. It wasn't logical, so I dismissed the story. "However, I heard it again a year later. I heard that the therapist had used a Hawaiian healing process called ho 'oponopono. I had never heard of it, yet I couldn't let it leave my mind. If the story was at all true, I had to know more. I had always understood "total responsibility" to mean that I am responsible for what I think and do. Beyond that, it's out of my hands. I think that most people think of total responsibility that ay. We're responsible for what we do, not what anyone else does--but that's wrong. "The Hawaiian therapist who healed those mentally ill people would teach me an advanced new perspective about total responsibility. His name is Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len. We probably spent an hour talking on our first phone call. I asked him to tell me the complete story of his work as a therapist. He explained that he worked at Hawaii State Hospital for four years. That ward where they kept the criminally insane was dangerous. Psychologists quit on a monthly basis. The staff called in sick a lot or simply quit. People would walk through that ward with their backs against the wall, afraid of being attacked by patients. It was not a pleasant place to live, work, or visit. "Dr. Len told me that he never saw patients. He agreed to have an office and to review their files. While he looked at those files, he would work on himself. As he worked on himself, patients began to heal. "'After a few months, patients that had to be shackled were being allowed to walk freely,' he told me. 'Others who had to be heavily medicated were getting off their medications. And those who had no chance of ever being released were being freed.' I was in awe.'not only that,' he went on, 'but the staff began to enjoy coming to work. Absenteeism and turnover disappeared. We ended up with more staff than we needed because patients were being released, and all the staff was showing up to work. Today, that ward is closed.' "This is where I had to ask the million dollar question: 'What were you doing within yourself that caused those people to change?' "'I was simply healing the part of me that created them,' he said. I didn't understand. Dr. Len explained that total responsibility for your life means that everything in your life- simply because it is in your life--is your responsibility. In a literal sense the entire world is your creation.

2 "Whew. This is tough to swallow. Being responsible for what I say or do is one thing. Being responsible for what everyone in my life says or does is quite another. Yet, the truth is this: if you take complete responsibility for your life, then everything you see, hear, taste, touch, or in any way experience is your responsibility because it is in your life. This means that terrorist activity, the president, the economy or anything you experience and don't like--is up for you to heal. They don't exist, in a manner of speaking, except as projections from inside you. The problem isn't with them, it's with you, and to change them, you have to change you. "I know this is tough to grasp, let alone accept or actually live. Blame is far easier than total responsibility, but as I spoke with Dr. Len, I began to realize that healing for him and in ho 'oponopono means loving yourself. "If you want to improve your life, you have to heal your life. If you want to cure anyone, even a mentally ill criminal you do it by healing you. "I asked Dr. Len how he went about healing himself. What was he doing, exactly, when he looked at those patients' files? "'I just kept saying, 'I'm sorry' and 'I love you' over and over again,' he explained. "That's it? "That's it. "Turns out that loving yourself is the greatest way to improve yourself, and as you improve yourself, you improve your world. "Let me give you a quick example of how this works: one day, someone sent me an that upset me. In the past I would have handled it by working on my emotional hot buttons or by trying to reason with the person who sent the nasty message. "This time, I decided to try Dr. Len's method. I kept silently saying, 'I'm sorry' and 'I love you,' I didn't say it to anyone in particular. I was simply evoking the spirit of love to heal within me what was creating the outer circumstance. "Within an hour I got an from the same person. He apologized for his previous message. Keep in mind that I didn't take any outward action to get that apology. I didn't even write him back. Yet, by saying 'I love you,' I somehow healed within me what was creating him. "I later attended a ho 'oponopono workshop run by Dr. Len. He's now 70 years old, considered a grandfatherly shaman, and is somewhat reclusive. He praised my book, The Attractor Factor. He told me that as I improve myself, my book's vibration will raise, and everyone will feel it when they read it. In short, as I improve, my readers will improve. "'What about the books that are already sold and out there?' I asked.

3 "'They aren't out there,' he explained, once again blowing my mind with his mystic wisdom. 'They are still in you.' In short, there is no out there. It would take a whole book to explain this advanced technique with the depth it deserves. "Suffice It to say that whenever you want to improve anything in your life, there's only one place to look: inside you. When you look, do it with love."

I have always felt that the simple principles of atonement offered by Ho'oponopono are a gift from the Creator so that we may finally take our rightful place on Earth and enjoy a life of peace, joy, abundance and good health--not just for some, but for everyone. I truly believe that our role on earth is of caretakers--taking care of the animals, plants and of each other. It is clear to me that we are now experiencing the effects of thousands of years of greed, hate and appalling cruelty towards the animals, nature and other human beings. I believe that through Ho'oponopono the Creator has given us the opportunity to repair the damage- -I am doing my part, and for the sake of all of us, I hope that you will do the same. Please note that the meditations and the images on this site may not be copied or used for commercial use. Additionally, please do not "force" Ho'oponopono onto anyone. Remember that you have no right to force your opinions or beliefs onto anyone else--even if you "think" they may help others. Indeed those who practise Ho'oponopono know quite well that the best way to help others is to look within. So if you truly want to help others use the Ho'oponopono mantra "I am sorry, please forgive me, I love you and I thank you", and other cleaning practises, breathing exercises and meditations to eliminate what is in you that is causing the adverse condition to manifest in the other person's life.

5 There is a profuse amount of information on the Internet about Ho'oponopono. If you are not at all familiar with Ho'oponopono I need to clarify some very important points: Ho'oponopono is not a religion and never will become one. With Ho'oponopono there are no teachers, gurus or high priests or middle men. Ho'oponopono practitioners know that the Creator is the only teacher there is. Indeed, there are those who are more experienced in the practice of Ho'oponopono, but they are regarded in the same way you would regard an older brother or sister. Ho'oponopono is a tool for atonement, for correcting errors, erasing the effects of past actions and memories that cause havoc and grief in our lives, the lives of others and on mother nature as a whole. Anyone can practise Ho'oponopono--essentially you are seeking a dialogue with the Creator. However, before you proceed further you will need to be comfortable with the following fundamental concepts of Ho'oponopono. When faced with any adverse situation, the Ho'oponopono practitioner will immediately ask "What is it in me that is causing this event to take place, this person to behave this way, this sickness to manifest? etc". Ho'oponopono practitioners know that blaming others is a sure way for making sure of the recurrence of a problem. If you cannot get past the habit of blame, I suggest you do not use these meditations. Rather use the breathing exercises and other chants. If you can pass through this major ego generated hurdle, I promise you that you will absolutely love Ho'oponopono--not only, you will witness miracles in your life and the lives of others. Those who follow and practise religions of love will quickly recognise that the message of Ho'oponopono is not at all new. Kabbalah has been teaching these very same principles since the times of the prophet Abraham. Jesus embodied these principles and widely taught them in the Gospel. 6 All of my Ho'oponopono meditations and chants include the Ho'oponopono Mantra. Dear Father: Here we acknowledge the Creator who gives Unconditional Love. If you believe that you are the result of an explosion or worse still that you created yourself, you are going to have a lot of trouble with this one. The word Father means "Giver Of Life" and I am sure you realise that it has nothing to do with bearded patriarchs. Addressing the Creator is fundamental to this process, since only the Creator can fix the mess that we (and our ancestors) have created. I am sorry This statement opens the door to atonement. The moment you take responsibility for any negative manifestation you experience or witness you also create an opportunity for healing. The apology is not directed to the Creator. The Creator is Spirit and does not need nor care about apologies. The apology is an acknowledgement that we are sorry for whatever it is that we (or our ancestors before us) have done to cause the adverse circumstance to take place. There is no need to grovel, just a simple "I am sorry" will do. Please forgive me We are asking for forgiveness for having forgotten how much the Creator loves us. We are asking for forgiveness for having shut out the Creator from our lives and missing out on all the wonderful experiences that we could have had. We ask for forgiveness with the absolute certainty that it has already been granted. The Creator is Spirit and is Unconditional Love, incapable of experiencing feelings of anger, resentment and all the other ego related neurotic behaviours that afflict humans. It is important to note here that Ho'oponopono practitioners never have to forgive anyone, since they realise that all wrongdoing is the result of their own wrong action or memories--past or present. I love you

7 When Jesus was asked "which is the greatest commandments of them all" he surprised everyone (typical) and stated "You shall love the Lord Your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." Love is a great healing power. Sending the Creator an SMS of love will reverberate through your psyche and generate an immediate feeling of well being. Once again being pure Spirit, the Creator, does not need your love, but the very act of thinking loving thoughts will tune your mind to that frequency with remarkable and immediate results. And I thank you As stated earlier, whatever your petition or concern, the moment you take responsibility for its occurrence and seek a way out--you are guaranteed a response. Almost invariably the response will never be what you expect (or in some cases want)--but what you need to start the process of healing or reconstruction. 8 In Dr Hew Len s PHD training, he was taught that it is his job to help other people, but then he learned the Ho oponopono process from Morrnah Simeona A Living Treasure of Hawaii: Morrnah taught that whenever any type of problem comes up, we must look at ourselves, and that Peace begins with me. Ho oponopono is a process of only looking at myself and working on the garbage (memories) in me (my subconscious mind), because once I get myself in rhythm with The Divinity, everybody else gets into rhythm too; But if I am out of rhythm, so too will be everybody else. The idea of Ho oponopono is to work directly with The Divinity, saying to The Divinity incessantly: I Love You; I am sorry; Please forgive me for whatever is going on in me that I perceive this in a certain way; Thank You., and then allow The Divinity to make the corrections, which is to transmute the garbage (memories) in my subconscious mind back to Zero, and then out of that Zero (void), Divinity can come forth. 9 Thank You.. Built into the I Love You is the process of repentance and forgiveness, and that is my responsibility. Divinity s responsibility is to say: I have heard you, and then: I am going to take care of that for you, and I am going to erase it when I feel it is right and perfect to ME to do so. My job is very simple: - I take 100% responsibility for whatever is going on in me, and Divinity will do whatever needs to be done. If I knock, the door will open. If I ask, I will receive. ( Can you imagine all the other date I am running with? ) Dr Hew Len says that nothing can happen to us unless it is already in our data bank (subconscious mind), because that is the Law of Cause and Effect. So I look within myself, and ask The Divinity to erase the causes in me (whatever these memories are) what would cause me to see the world in a way that The Divinity didn t create it. I know that Divinity created the world perfect.: I say to The Divinity in me: I Love You; I am sorry; Please forgive me for whatever is going on in me that I am experiencing this; Thank You.

10 Q: What gets erased by The Divinity so that my problems stop? A: I have no idea: - That s The Divinity s job, not mine! I am not doing The Divinity s job. Divinity erases; I am just saying: I Love You; I am sorry; Please forgive me for whatever is going on in me that I perceive this in a certain way; Thank You. I only work on the garbage (memories) in me that causes me to experience things in a certain way. Divinity created everybody perfect, what is not perfect is the garbage (memories) in us. When I say to The Divinity: I Love You; I am sorry; Please forgive me for whatever garbage there is in me, that is causing me to experience rudeness; Thank You., The Divinity is then willing to reach down into my subconscious mind, and erase those memories, bringing me back to The Zero State. The Universe was created out of the void, so when my mind goes back to Zero, I am free. Out of this Zero State, Divinity then sends inspiration, so that I know what to do.
