My guest today would argue that if you have more than ONE goal, you may have none at all. This is The 5 am Miracle - Episode #107: Your ONE Thing That Matters Most: An Interview with Jay Papasan [Intro Song] Good morning and welcome to the 107th episode of The 5 AM Miracle. I am Jeff Sanders and this is THE podcast dedicated to dominating your day before breakfast. Jay and I will be discussing why focusing on only one thing is so effective and how to prioritize your projects using the power of dominoes. 3 3 question about mental health. Because of the personal nature of the I m changing his name and will refer to him as Brandon. Brandon writes, I consider myself a highly productive person, a go-getter, and when I have an idea I usually just get up and do it in that moment. But, recently I have faced a life change and I am currently battling depression and anxiety. My anxiety stems from my perfectionism and always having to raise the bar for myself. I realize that mental illness (depression, anxiety, mood disorder, ADHD) can be a touchy subject to speak about on your show. My question to you is as someone that is very high functioning and highly productive like yourself, have you ever had a period in life where you were either depressed or low functioning AND, if so, how did you overcome that? Great question Brandon. Now, since I am not a doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, or any other -ist, my thoughts here are just my opinion, so please don t take this as medical advice.

4 4 To answer your question, yes, I certainly have had low points in my life. I would never have classified those low points as clinical depression, but low-functioning is a good term to use. Essentially, I have had times where my energy was extremely low, I had no desire to do anything, and I felt pretty useless. In terms of anxiety, I did suffer from panic attacks during my senior year of college. Looking back on that experience I think I was just nervous about finishing school, entering the real world, and finally starting my life as an adult. Fortunately, I have bounced out of these phases and I would credit a few key strategies as my go-to-solutions whenever low periods or anxiety attacks like these have shown up. First, running has been a lifesaver for me. I have never had success relying on drugs or medications to solve my problems. You can go back to episode #95 when I talked all about my history with drug use if you re interested. Essentially, I tend to lean on the fundamentals of being as healthy as possible, which I believe has allowed me to minimize my stress and maximize my positive attitude. Running marathons has played a key role in making me feel more in control and giving me the

5 5 confidence to push forward through other tough parts of life. The second part of my equation is consuming large amounts of inspiration. Think of this as a doctor prescribing a self-help book instead of a bottle of pills. What has worked for me, especially during the tough times, is to read and listen to as much positive material as I can get my hands on. For a few years I would listen and re-listen to a few audio CDs in my car because they were so inspiring. These CDs were from guys like Brian Tracy, Earl Nightingale, Darren Hardy, and Les Brown -- the real famous personal development speakers who had such amazing advice, and such a positive outlook on life. Honestly, those guys are a big reason why I record this podcast every week. I know that material like this helped me and I hope that it can do the same for you. So, that s the gist of my program. Just two steps. Lots of running mixed with positive personal growth education and inspiration. I would also throw in that eating a healthy diet and sleeping is essential, but the most obvious effects for me occurred when I was running and listening to amazing audio.
