OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, SWBAT write a 3 paragraph letter to one of the main characters of the Red Scarf Girl clarifying, suggesting or protesting a situation using a graphic organizer.
- using main idea and supporting details - using graphic organizers - using conventions of standard English grammar - identify different viewpoints in the struggle
To help us understand the story deeper, we will talk about the traits of each character as we encounter them. Who can remind me, what is a character trait? Character traits refers to the ethical and moral grounding of a person, not so much about his personality. Can be influenced by her culture, formal education, religion, home environment, friends, and others. What can you say about the person beside you? Why did you say that?
Grandmother Song Po-po Ji-li Jiang Mom Dad
How else would you describe our main character? Please give supporting details from the text. Smart Courageous Brave Back to first page (From Teacher Zhang, page #198) "You have self-esteem and you always try to excel. That's why I believe you are brave enough to face and eventually over come the difficulties of life.
How else would you describe Ji-Li s mother? Please give supporting details from the text. Strong Caring Smart Back to first page (From Jiang Ji-li, page #13) Every evening we eagerly waited for her to come home from work. We rushed out to greet her and opened her handbag, where there was sure to be a treat for us. Mom spoiled us, Grandma had said.
How would you describe Song Po-po? Please give supporting details from the text. Helpful Caring Kind (From Jiang Ji-li, page #15) She had raised all three of us and we felt like she was another grandmother. Back to first page
How else would you describe Ji-Li s grandmother? Please give supporting details from the text. Fun/Funny Courageous Wise (From Jiang Ji-li, page #13) "Grandma was truly amazing. She had graduated from a modern style high school in 1914.) Back to first page
How else would you describe ji-li s father? Please give supporting details from the text. Fun/Funny Courageous Brave (From Teacher Zhang, page #198) "You have self-esteem and you always try to excel. That's why I believe you are brave enough to face and eventually over come the difficulties of life. Back to first page
For those who stayed in school until graduation, they were sent to the countryside, because Mao thought it was necessary for graduates to be re-educated by famers and peasants. Four million high school and college graduates and sixteen million students were sent to the farmland where they ended up working the farms and performing manual labor. Problems arose for most of the young people due to the scarcity of food, housing, and money. Many talented students talents were wasted, because they were stuck working in the fields until the revolution ended.
The Cultural Revolution led many citizens to lose their possessions. Politicians, landowners, and the high class society lost their jobs and properties. The lives of many Chinese were changed for the worse. More citizens became peasants and worked in the farms in order to afford foods and earn money for their families.
***Now we will write a letter to any of the following characters in the book Red Scarf Girl: - Ji Li Jiang - Song Po-po - Ji-Li s mother - Ji-li s father - Ji-li s grandmother - Mao Zedong ***You need to: 1. introduce yourself 2. tell what lesson are we learning in our SS/ELA class 3. ask a question 4. Make a complaint or suggestion about the effect to the students of Mao s communist beliefs (responsibility, conformity, equality, revolution) ***Use the correct letter format in the graphic organizer. Type your final letter on the computer.
Please submit your work as soon as you finish them and proceed to the listening center or read your book: Chapters 1-3.
(p. 3) What is the slogan? Does it motivate you? What parent decision has upset you in the past few years? (p. 9-10) Why might the political background investigations worry Ji- Li s parents? (p ) Why might the size of one s home be important?
(p. 21): What adjective is used to describe Chairman Mao? (p ): Why is it bad to make money? a. Is this still true in China today? What are the Four Olds? (p. 36): Why are Ji-Li and An Yi accused of being capitalist or nonrevolutionary?
(p.40-1): Why is everyone trying to outdo each other? What does that prove? (p ): What happens to Aunt Xi- Wen? Seeing this, what would you do in Ji-Li s shoes? (p ): Why does Ji- Li cry? (p. 51): Who have you cried with recently: friend, parent, at a funeral?
