3 World Water Day is annually held on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The United Nations General Assembly has designed the 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. This year, the theme of the World Water Day is "Wastewater.

4 Did you ever wonder why water is so important? Water is very important for life. We need water to drink, to wash ourselves, to cook, to water plants and many other things. Without water, every living creature, plants, animals and human beings would die.

7 The story of drop Hello everyone, my name is drop , and like my other colleagues, I am part of the National Department of Water, where each of us carries out our own task. I deal with water distribution and transportation. I am a bit worried because Mr. Water, my employer, called me into his office after a little problem. Let's hope everything goes well...

8 Half an hour later... I really couldn t have imagined he would have punished me so severely. Now I'm forced to go there... to that isolated place: to KENYA... I will be forced to share most of my time with drops that will never accept me completely for sure. Four days later... I'm about to leave! I have just got into the "bottle", ready to face this difficult challenge. Some time later.. This trip is really endless, how far is Kenya from my department?... I have arrived at last and a strange drop, named reëndruppel487, is here to welcome me. My impressions on Kenya? Their department is totally different from ours. It's empty, no technology at all, and the employees carry out fewer tasks.

9 Days pass and the situation isn t changing here, it's all monotonous (boring). All the others, despite their difficulties, seem to be very close, so I don t think they need me. But one day the alarm sounds in the department: the last water reserves have finished. I immediately decide to get in touch with my boss at my country department to ask him to send me some water supplies. Everything seems to go well until Mr. Water tells me that my colleagues have been trapped in a dam during the trip, and will not be able to join us until they re released. So, having previously been given the job by Mr. Retaw, me and reëndruppel487 leave the department and set off. We must be patient as the trip is long and tiring. The only positive thing is that I'm not alone, even though, to tell the truth, we have not introduced ourselves to each other yet. However, the drop at my side is not that chatty, at any rate with me. As expected, we do not speak until we re half way there. I look at his face and it seems as if he s going to say something, in fact after a few minutes he gives in, and says, Why are you so silent? Have you finally understood we aren t so different from us? Didn t you imagine we live in this conditions? But on the other hand what could I expect: you are like all the others that don t understand our problems.

10 While I m listening to his words, I understand that now I m changed and I m not that insensitive drop I was at the beginning of this experience in Kenya: I am more mature and I ve understood their serious problems. After lots of days of absolute silence, I decide to reply her: You are absolutely right. I ve been so stupid to believe you re different from us, but you re wrong in something: now I m changed and and I m going to help you. What do you think about starting over and pretending we have never met? Reëndruppel487, very happy to hear this words, accepts my apologies.

11 So after this new beginning, we start speaking and soon we become friends.

12 Without realizing it, we have already arrived to the dam, where our drop colleagues have got stuck and, after getting free them, we come back to the department before them on a big bottle. We immediately begin working hard and in a few hours I teach to my Kenyan friends how to don t waste the water, making irrigation canals, aqueducts and a sewer system. When the drops arrive we re all ready and so in a little time we solve the problem. After a month the Kenya department is technologic, functional and lots of drops work inside it. Thanks to my and my friend s help, we have been able all together to make this beautiful country a better place where to live: the water doesn t waste more, all the cities are provided with sewage systems and hydropowers. Obviously there are sill lots of thing to do, but with the enthusiasm of my colleagues and with a great friend by my side, nothing is impossible. I receive lots of awards and, in a little time, i also get a promotion and an invitation by Mr Water to come back in my country. Despite I am very honored, I decide to refuse, because now I ve understood that this is my place. I will thank forever my boss, because instead of a punition, he offered me the opportunity to open my eyes in front of the reality and to confront with who is less lucky than me.
