ISSUE 4 11 NOVEMBER 2018 The Daly Prophet Est.2018 for Daly College, Indore EDITORIAL Zahra Chandurwala With a gazillion things going around on campus, free time seems to be an oxymoron. We have been raised in an environment where multitasking is in the air and we can neither escape from it nor do we want to. Stretching our wings in all realms of life, one thing that this institution has surely instilled in us is the art of all round progress, and amidst all this bustle, one goal that remains unaltered is to strike a balance amongst the plethora of activities that we engage in. While the post PTM season got our nerves, the number of Commendation Cards outdid the Academic Cards thus inducing us with incentives to set our sights yonder. Moreover, the lengthening of our after school to-do lists and the very feeling of 24 hours not being enough has gotten us down to business and simultaneously, helped step up our game. Now only if we could get our ways with the clock, we would master our customised fusion of activities. Henceforth, instead of taking the back seat, let s take a quick break, restore and regain our aims and get back to the grind. Let s emerge as good leaders in what we deem right and as good learners in order to imbibe the optimism. For as far as we can, let us gather satisfaction with what we have accomplished but at the same time, not limit ourselves to that. Therefore, just give a boost to your energy levels, physically and mentally, and experience the equilibrium you create while developing in all fields. So if we could patent the art of procrastination with utmost excellence all this while and simply be bad workmen blaming their tools, then a little effort towards striking a balance now wouldn t be a herculean task. Likewise, this issue of the Daly Prophet endeavours to motivate you for all you can do. What s new? 2 DC 11 NOVEMBER 2018 POPULAR PROFILE Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw A pioneer of the biotechnology industry in India and the founder of the country s leading biotechnology enterprise, Biocon, Kiran Mazumdar- Shaw, a 65 year old entrepreneur is the first self-made female billionaire of the country. She has led a pioneering enterprise that utilises India s homegrown scientific talent to make breakthroughs in clinical research. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Mrs. Shaw is a woman of substance, who inspires both men and women. She has been accorded the title of one of the top businesswomen in magazines like Forbes and Financial Times. Shaw is also the chairperson of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and was awarded the Othmer Gold Medal for PTM s fatal attraction Raina Modi Even though playing FLAMES, exchanging juicy gossip about crushes, making excuses to step out of class, and praying for a substitute teacher are the order of the day, the one thing that I look forward to stuffing in my skirt pocket, is a sensation that I will sorely and surely miss as I sink my teeth into the soft yielding centre of the mildly spiced, highly flavoured, sautéed savoury filling ensconced in a three cornered crispy crust that takes me straight into outer space is the Daly SAMOSA. After having read this description, looking at her bright eyes, I now realise that this was probably the singular reason my mother attended all the PTMs! A GLIMPSE OF YOUR LIFE IN CLASS 12 2

Communication An important tool The art of conveying one s feelings or emotions to another person is communication. Speaking appropriately and distinctly is a skill to adapt your language to an audience for it to comprehend clearly and concisely. It is rightly said, "The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said." We start communicating from the moment we are blessed with life. A newborn child conveys his hunger or pain through his only communication tool called crying. When we grow up, we express ourselves, learn from others, teach each other through this beautiful art of communication. Communication is the backbone of all relationships. It is the key behind bringing out the best in ourselves. Being a good listener is also equally important. Honesty with our thoughts and expression in our words help us to reveal our feelings. It is important for us to realise that it is only effective communication that can build or break the society we live in. Remember, Communication works for those, who work at it." ~ Aaryn Anand GO-TO TIPS for BETTERING OURSELVES 1. Accept and prioritise your tasks. 2. Admit your frustrations and face your fears. 3. 4 ANALYSE YOUR STRESS STYLE Imagine yourself in a stressful situation. What do you typically experience? Check all that apply. Give yourself a Mind point if you checked the following questions: 2,3,6,7,10,12 and 14 1 My heart beats faster. MIND TOTAL: 2 I find it difficult to concentrate because of distracting thoughts. 3 I worry too much about things that don t really matter. Give yourself a Body point if you checked the following questions: 1,4,5,8,9,11 and 13 BODY TOTAL: 4 I feel jittery. Choose a relaxer 5 I get diarrhea. BODY 6 I imagine terrifying scenes. 7 I can t keep anxiety provoking pictures and images out of from my mind. 8 My stomach gets tense. If stress registers mainly in your body, you will need a remedy that will break up the physical tension pattern. This may be vigorous body workout, but a slow paced even lazy, muscle relaxer may be equally effective. Here are some suggestions. Aerobics, Progressive relaxation, Swimming, Biking, Rowing, Walking, Yoga, Massage, Soaking in hot tub, Golf etc. 9 I pace up and down nervously. MIND 10 I am bothered by unimportant thoughts running in my mind. 11 I immobilise. 12 I feel I am losing out on things because I can t make decisions fast enough. 13 I perspire. If you experience stress as an invasion of worrisome thoughts, the most direct intervention is anything that will engage your mind completely and redirect it, such as meditation. On the other hand some people find that sheer exertion of physical exercise unhooks the mind wonderfully and is very effective therapy. Here are some suggestions. Meditation, Exercise, Reading, Crosswords puzzle, TV, Movies, Sewing, Carpentry, Handicrafts, Creative imagery etc. 14 I can t stop thinking about worrisome things. Credits: Mrs. Preeti Vats 4

AN UPSURGE OF EMOTIONS Inspiration and vengeance Shivom Rathore From being the friend of a practice casually kind of a swimmer to seeing the same person going exceptionally hard on practice just because he saw another person finish 50 metre in half the timing as his, it feels like my 15 year old naïve eyes have seen a lot. Pondering over the matter, I often get driven to opine whether there is some similarity between inspiration and vengeance and while others may doubt if the both even share a boundary, I reckon that there s a fine line. Vengeance, defined as the desire to avenge any buried experience of the past, in this situation, is the irresistible urge to beat a person under any circumstance. It is the feeling that would make you do whatever it takes to settle your score with him. This is when it gets personal and it won t take you anywhere. Consequently, desperation may get you to do wrong things, like, in this case, injuring the other swimmer, stripping him off his ability to swim. On the other hand, inspiration would be the determination to defeat yourself in order to be at par with him. It is the realisation that if he did it, so can I. The feat seems achievable and you make it your goal. An inspired person can do wonders. He inculcates in himself, a great deal of discipline, perseverance and respect for the former achiever. But a person with vengeance in himself can either allow it to consume him, or change the way he thinks, out of which the latter should be done. Inspiration takes you to the stepping stones of success, but vengeance is a mere diversion. DARK PARADISE Diya Seth Every time I close my eyes, it s a dark paradise. A paradise that teaches me how to be someone. A paradise where struggle is success. A paradise where I am just a mediocre petit girl trying to get accustomed to the daylight. And a paradise where I achieve all my goals not just by sitting still, but by endeavouring. I squiggle like a worm, forcing my not-so empowering legs to climb up the leaf and nibble as much as I can. But in this race of striving and engulfing the most out of the left, I neglect the punier mates around me, overlooking their existence. Hence, at that very moment, different thoughts leave the starting line like runners in a marathon, all competing in my head. Is this why I was created? Do I stand anywhere in front of this massive universe? Does this universe ever side-line me? When I open my eyes, which are struggling to adjust to the bright light of the intoxicating world do I realise the BEWARE OF KARMA Everybody has heard about the Newton's law "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction" and this is the law which karma follows. Karma is a sanskrit word which means "actions" or " deeds. There are two very popular adages which say what goes around comes around and as you sow, so shall you reap, and this is the basic idea on which karma works. Karma functions in different ways. Let's say someone did wrong to you, broke your trust or ditched you. What do you do? Do you go for a revenge? Well you could, but how would that make you any different from that person? You would end up doing the exact same thing that you hated him for. That's where karma does its job. Always remember, karma never loses an address, it has no deadline and likewise the saying goes, Karma has no menu, you get served what you deserve. It is believed in the Buddhist tradition that karma refers to a type of action which is driven by intentions which further leads to future consequences. So, if today someone pissed you off, just sit back and relax, karma will handle it! Remember, what you do now will come back to you in future. Life has a funny way of making you deal with what you make others go through. ~ Ananya Shandilya 5

TÊTE-À-TÊTE- Mr. Zoravar Bakhshi Q1) How long have you been teaching? This is my first teaching assignment. Q2) What made you join Daly College of all schools? It was by choice.coming from one of the newest amongst public schools, it was nice to know what teaching at the oldest would feel like. Q3)Which has been your most enjoyable moment in the school so far? Winning the IPSC Music Competition at VDJS has definitely been a moment I wouldn t forget. Q4) What vision do you have for the school and your students? I would love to see the school being run by the students. I feel that the teachers should only be there to guide or act as intermediaries and supervisors. The entire objective of a boarding school is self discipline and independence. Q6) How are you able to make students feel so comfortable with you? I feel I m able to do that because at one point, I ve been a student myself. I have seen both sides of the spectrum and so I can picture their emotions and what they feel as I have been through all of it myself. Q7) Which is your favourite instrument to listen to? The Shehnai and the Sitar. Month gone by What s brewing? October 2018 was a busy month with heat waves, unpredictable weather conditions, the half yearly examinations, the Annual Athletic Meet and a plethora of other usual on-goings. A unique initiative and the first of its kind, DC Cares- a fundraiser concert for our very own Support Staff marked an excellent beginning to the month. Next in line was a hearty dose of physical training as we prepared for the Annual Athletic Meet. All day and night, the school echoed of cheering for the Houses. The band with its rhythmic beat brought out our true house spirit. The Meet ended after an entire week of practising, training and rigorous competition. It was the best way to ward off our post-exam tiredness and refresh ourselves. With no such major event coming up, the school again went back to its regular routine of Assemblies, Inter-House debates and academics. This break was good enough to gear us up the Round Square Adventure Conference that the school hosted from October. The delegates arrived from 16 schools including Vivek High School, RKK Public School, Sanskar Valley School, Punjab Public School, Emerald Heights and other schools from South Asia and the Gulf Region participated in various adventure activities- visiting Mandu for camping. As the school bid adieu to its young adventurers, the IPSC Basketball (Girls) tournament was hosted by the school. Our basketball players defeated all other teams and emerged as winners after a tough final match. Signing off, Rajlakshmi Bagadiya 6

DEAR TEACHERS, WITH LOVE IF I WERE A TEACHER Shivansh Bagadiya Teaching is the one profession that creates all other professions". The topic at hand is a very simple one at the face of it, but requires deep thinking. At the cost of sounding fake, I present my piece on if I were a teacher. If I were to be a teacher for a day, I would go about my job in a manner slightly different from what is commonplace. Giving a pause to whatever subject I'm supposed to be teaching, I'd try to educate my students about what really matters in life. For once, I wouldn't look at course completion, but instead try to communicate with the students about their level of comprehension. I would inspire my students to think rather than memorise, communicate rather than chant and participate instead of trying to cope with. I would tell them how important it is to ask questions, unafraid and full of curiosity. I would tell them to read vividly, to introspect, to understand what it is that drives them, and tell them to devote themselves to that goal. I would make my class understand the value of humility and compassion, but talking to them as a friend, rather than an authority. Socrates said and I quote " I cannot teach anyone anything, I can only make them think" and that is exactly what I'd try to get everyone to do. It doesn't matter which direction your imagination runs in, as long as it's not sitting idle. I would tell students to read poetry, and let the works of great men and women resonate with something inside them. Lastly, I would tell students to face exams and tests unafraid and high spirited, for it is not these pieces of paper which will decide their life. Instead, I would emphasise on their gaining actual, practical knowledge about anything under the sky. But alas, if I were a teacher, I'd only get 50 minutes to do all this. Maybe I'll take the fruit break? WHAT YOU ARE TO ME ~ Bhraguraj Singh Baghel Teacher' - a word that takes me back to the start, the start of my very first day at school. I tightly clenched my mother's hand. I was afraid to let her go, but suddenly somebody held my other hand, and all my fears flew because there was someone to understand. She wiped my tears and took me to class. It's when grooming started. I understood that a teacher is the second parent I had, for which I'm still glad. I am glad that I lived under their guidance. They taught me all, all they had. Like a tree, I have reached heights, for my strength re-unites. For they have given me strength to endeavour. Thank you for all that you have blessed me with. 8 LET S TALK ABOUT: If we could switch roles with our TEACHERS for a day If I were to switch roles with my teacher, I would feel like a complete soul during break, relishing countless servings of samosas with a privilege of having a tissue paper to clean my oily hands. Thus solving the mystery of oil stains on my fellow students uniforms. ~ Naquiya Barwaniwala If I were to switch roles with my teacher, I would change roles with Principal sir and increase the tea break time, I would allow the students to come late to class if they were having a free lesson and would give more attention to sports than academics. If I could switch roles with my teachers for a day I wouldn t teach from a lesson plan, I would make the whole day up as I go. I d wait for the break to finally enter the staff room and pick up on all the gossip, such a gala day. ~Ishika Anand *DALIENS* are the ones of who one should be scared of. If I were a teacher, I would pity them. Honestly, being DC s teacher won t be a profession I would like to pursue. The students here are actually aliens. They ll find their ways out in every situation. I can t teach aliens. ~Meet Khatri ~Himanshu Somani If I were a teacher, I would give a free lesson once a week, and I would let students enjoy their entire fruit peacefully during the fruit break, instead of teaching them in that also. Moreover, homework would not exist in my reign. ~ Zuhair Chandurwala If I were to switch roles with my teacher, I would finish the whole course in a day, so that we don t have to study the other day. ~Gaurika Anand If I were a teacher, I would take the students on field trips everyday so that they can enjoy the natural beauty. Wouldn t let them be limited to the classrooms. ~Gauri Shahra Ever wondered what the current hot topic is in the OI staff room? Well, if I were a teacher I would first and foremost attend the gossip sessions there. ~Katyayni Singh All opinions expressed in this publication are purely of the writer s own and not that of the Daly Prophet or its editorial policy.
