5 Dissertation: Title: Kant s Response to Hume in the Second Analogy Primary Advisors: Daniel Sutherland (Chair, UIC), Sally Sedgwick, Samuel Fleischacker Abstract: In the dissertation, I advance a novel account of Kant s argument in the Second Analogy of Experience. The Second Analogy is significant because there Kant responds to what is known as the Humean problem which inspired his critical philosophy. In order to understand the Second Analogy, one thus needs to identify the exact nature of the Humean problem Kant intends to address. Two popular readings of the Second Analogy identify the Humean problem either with the problem of causation or the with problem of induction. After demonstrating the textual and philosophical problems with both of these readings, I offer an alternative reading, according to which the Second Analogy goes beyond solving the problem of causation and yet falls short of addressing the problem of induction. I thereby point out a false dichotomy between the two popular readings of the Second Analogy and advance an interpretation that better fits Kant s overall critical agenda both textually and philosophically.
