Answer Key for Students Freedom from Bitterness: Course FFB You have been encouraged to use your own words while formulating answers from the reading text. It is OK when you occasionally quote directly from the text; but you should not be doing so often. We are looking for your own thoughts and words in order to demonstrate your understanding of what you have read. In this answer key, we have often quoted from the text directly. This has been done in order to have an accurate standard of comparison for your answers in your own words. Therefore, your answers are acceptable whenever they are a reasonable representation of the general gist of the text; we do not require or want an exact match with our answers provided herein. There are many questions that ask for a personal response. We suggest you review these with your pastor or other mature, Biblebelieving Christian that you know. Answers or words not from the reading text are set in brackets. Lesson One: Understanding Bitterness Introduction (1) 1. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. (Eph 4:31) 2. a. what Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross: even as God for Christ s sake hath forgiven you (Eph 4:32). b. : The key is that Christ knows you, because many falsely claim to know Him (Mat 7:21-23) 3. her husband had died, and within the next ten years both of her sons died For it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me (Ruth 1:13b). She was comparing in order to determine who had the right to be more bitter Ruth 1:20-21: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. 4. You can see it in the eyes and in the lines of the face You can see it in their mouth, you can see it when they re smiling or laughing You can hear it in the tone of their voices. You can hear it when they protest that they are not bitter. 5. [No:] it is not possible to have two different, contradictory attitudes on the inside. Bitterness defined (2) 6. Guilt is what we feel when we sin, and bitterness is what we feel when others sin against us. 7. a. Bitterness is always based upon someone else s sin whether real or imagined. b. Many times we can be bitter toward someone for what he said, when in reality he did not say it. The cause of bitterness (3) 8. Bitterness is based on [perceived] sin [of another] that somehow relates to you [and has hurt you]. 9. it depends on how close the other person is to me. Bitterness is related to those people who are close. 10. a.. Please do both (a) and (b): it is the key to overcoming bitterness and coming to true freedom. b But the Bible does not grant anyone the right to be bitter. Ephesians 4:31 says to get rid of all bitterness. 12. A root cannot be seen. But there can be visible evidence of its presence They drink in nourishment, and they do not stay roots. Eventually they come up If there is a bitter root, it will bear bitter fruit. 13. the world has two solutions. Keep the bitterness in, and make yourself sick, or let it out and spread the sickness around. 14. [Bitterness must not be vented upon others, as psychology might advise, because Scripture tells us this wisdom is of the devil and a lie against the truth, and brings only confusion and strife.] 15. Bitterness accumulates. Unless there s a solution to it, people do not get less bitter with maturity. They get more bitter over the years. It gets worse and worse. Lesson Two: Resolving Bitterness How we can tell (4) 1. a. Bitterness remembers details b. Because memory is helped by review, review, and more review. People do not usually mull over the wonderful things as much. But they do go over and over and over the bad things. Freedom from Bitterness (FFB): Student Answer Key as of 7/16/2015 1

The solution for bitterness (5) 2. the solution for bitterness is to get rid of it. [That is, put bitterness away by forgiving the offender! Note: the text has not yet specifically addressed forgiveness. The author at this point is only emphasizing that it is possible to unilaterally get rid of the bitterness.] Why we don t do it 3. [hurt resentment bitterness hatred murder] there is a close relationship between being hurt and being resentful. Someone gets hurt and then he gets resentful. There is another very close connection between resentment and bitterness. Resentment turns into a deep bitterness. There is a connection between bitterness and hatred, and a very clear biblical identification between hatred and murder (Mat 5:21-22). 4. Bitterness is just resentment that has been held on to. Overcoming the obstacle 5. a. make it apparent how sinful bitterness is. The bitter person must first recognize that he is bitter, and secondly, that it is a gross evil. b. the reason people do not deal with this sin is that they think it is the other person s sin. 6. a. No b. because bitterness doesn t forgive. 7. [No, because] In order to forgive this person when he says he is sorry, you have to be ready before he says he is sorry. And if you are ready to forgive him before he says he is sorry, then it doesn t depend on whether he says he is sorry or not. In other words, you get rid of bitterness unilaterally. It does not matter what the other person does. [Note: this answer is mostly a repeat of the prior answer, but it is the key to the whole issue, so we have asked it again in a different way.] 8. In reality bitterness is a sin that stands alone. The bitter person decides to be bitter independently of the offender. Confession before God 9. The only thing that gets rid of it is confession before God because of the Lord Jesus Christ s death and resurrection. Sweet water 10. [What comes out of us is what is inside, no matter the severity of the hardship. Severe hardships still produce sweetness if that is what is inside.] 11. [Remembering the other s sin.] I would know to this day exactly what she had said [i.e., the sin of the other]. That is the nature of bitterness. Summary (6) 12. I have to see that it is evil, and that it is my sin and my sin only I do not get rid of it any other way except calling it sin against the holy God, confessing it, and receiving forgiveness. 13. The difficulty is in getting my eyes off the other person s sin. 14. a. If it were his problem, and I was filled with sweetness and light, and not bitter, then I would be concerned about the other person. b. But if that is not my response, then I am bitter and it is my sin, not his. 15. a. b. 16. a. b W. Wright Street Pensacola, FL USA Freedom from Bitterness (FFB): Student Answer Key as of 7/16/2015 2

Answer Key for Graders Freedom from Bitterness Course FFB Note to Graders Own words: The student has been encouraged to use his own words while formulating his answers from the reading text. It is OK when he occasionally quotes from the text directly. If, however, the student is just copying directly from the text repeatedly, then correct him: he should use his own words in order to describe his own understanding of what the author has said in the text. We have often quoted from the text in this answer key, as an accurate reference to the original text. This has been done in order to have an accurate standard of comparison for the student s answers in his own words. (Otherwise, the grader would be comparing the student s answers in his own words to our answers in our own words, and there would be a drift away from the author s original meaning in the text.) Therefore, please accept the student s answers when they are a reasonable representation of the general gist of the text; please definitely do not require an exact match with our answers provided herein. Note: sometimes the answers herein are lengthy, in order to give a complete quotation from the book. Hopefully, the student s answers are more direct and to the point. When the quotation is lengthy, we have underlined the portion that most directly speaks to the answer. Personal responses: The MAKING IT PERSONAL questions ask for a personal response. Please give special attention to these they will often generate rare opportunities for an intimate glimpse into another human soul. We must be prepared to respond with both compassion and exhortation. Literature: Wherever appropriate, please ask us to send a specific related Chapel Library title (one) from our catalog to the student as an encouragement, which we can easily enclose along with his graded answer sheets when they are returned to him. Many of the student s personal answers will reveal real needs, and this is our best opportunity for discipleship. (Note: not a paperback and not a booklet from another course we offer.) Encouragement: In giving feedback, we should find a path that both 1) corrects errors that might lead to false thinking, and 2) encourages the student for the effort they have made. It might be best to show some tolerance for incomplete or even misguided answers when they do not compromise biblical truth. Note: If the student is a prison inmate, please do not use post-it notes on the student s answer pages to add comments. Many prisons do not allow these because some inmates use the glue on them to make weapons! The prison mail room will only return the lessons to us. When you need more space for comments, simply add a piece of folded notebook paper, noting before each comment the course, lesson, and question numbers. Answers are in italics. From this place forward, all the study questions are included from the course Study Guide everything the student has seen there, as a reference for the grader. 4 Lesson One: Understanding Bitterness Please read sections 1 to 3 before answering these questions. Very Important Note: We ask you to always use your own words in your answers. The answers to most questions are found in the reading text, but please do not merely quote the text for your answer. Rather, read what the text says, think about the meaning of what it says, and summarize its meaning in your own words for your answer. In this way, you will learn much more than simply a search, find, quote method for answering the questions. Introduction (1) 1. Memorize Ephesians 4:31. When finished, write it from memory. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. (Eph 4:31 AV) 2. a. What is the basis for getting rid of bitterness? The basis for all our actions in this regard must be what Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross: even as God for Christ s sake hath forgiven you (Eph 4:32). In all our actions, we are to be imitators of God. Christ died for the sins of His people on the cross of Calvary, so that they might have new life in Him (2Co 5:21), and that abundantly (Joh 10:10). His people can live this new life because He has sent the Holy Spirit to indwell them (Joh 14:16; 2Ti 1:14). The Holy Spirit gives them power to say no to sin s temptations (Rom 6:11-13; 1Pe 1:15). b. Making It Personal: Does Jesus Christ know you? (See Mat 7:21-23.), hopefully to reveal if the student in fact is saved. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (Mat 7:21-23 AV) 3. Why was Naomi bitter? her husband had died, and within the next ten years both of her sons died. She made some comments to her recently widowed daughters-in-law about it: For it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me (Ruth 1:13b). She was comparing in order to determine who had the right to be more bitter. And in Ruth 1:20-21: And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me? Her bitterness was toward God. 4. How can you recognize visually that someone is bitter? You can see it in the eyes and in the lines of the face even if the person is young. You can see it in their mouth, you can see it when they re smiling or laughing. They are bitter and you can see it. You can hear it in the tone of their voices. You can hear it when they protest that they are not bitter. The bitterness is central and pervades everything. 5. Is it possible to be compassionate and bitter at the same time? Why or why not? [No:] it is not possible to have two different, contradictory attitudes on the inside. Bitterness defined (2) 6. Describe the difference between the cause of guilt and the cause of bitterness. Guilt is what we feel when we sin, and bitterness is what we feel when others sin against us. 7. a. On what is bitterness always based? Bitterness is always based upon someone else s sin whether real or imagined. b. Must this basis be real in order to be effective? Why or why not? Bitterness is always based upon someone else s sin whether real or imagined. Consider the imaginary sin first. Many times we can be bitter toward someone for what he said, when in reality he did not say it. The cause of bitterness (3) 8. What is the cause of bitterness? Bitterness is based on [perceived] sin [of another] that somehow relates to you [and has hurt you]. Freedom from Bitterness Course FFB: Grader Answer Key as of 7/16/2015 2

9. Which is a stronger factor in causing bitterness: the size of the sin, or the closeness to you of the one who sinned? Why? it does not depend on how great the evil is, it depends on how close the other person is to me. Bitterness is related to those people who are close. 10. Making It Personal a. List the initials or positions of any persons who might cause you to feel bitter. b. Which of these in fact have caused you to feel bitter?. Hopefully, the student will begin to be open with us. 11. According to the Bible, does anyone have a right to feel bitter? Why or why not? You may think you have a right to be bitter. But the Bible does not grant anyone the right to be bitter. Ephesians 4:31 says to get rid of all bitterness. 12. Why does Hebrews 12:15 use the phrase root of bitterness? A root is something that is underground and cannot be seen. But there can be visible evidence of its presence, as when sidewalks are lifted. Roots do other things. The fact that you cannot see roots does not mean they are not there. Neither does it mean you will never see them. They drink in nourishment, and they do not stay roots. Eventually they come up. The fruit that is born bears a direct relation to the root producing it. The roots of an apple tree provide us with apples. If there is a bitter root, it will bear bitter fruit. Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble [you], and thereby many be defiled. (Heb 12:15 AV) 13. Describe the world s solutions to bitterness. the world has two solutions. Keep the bitterness in, and make yourself sick, or let it out and spread the sickness around. 14. What is the key point of James 3:14-16? Note: By key point we mean: key the phrase in the verse that relates to the topic at hand; point do not merely rewrite the printed words; rather, tell in your own words what the text means, the basic meaning behind the words (i.e., a paraphrase). [Bitterness must not be vented upon others, as psychology might advise, because Scripture tells us this wisdom is of the devil and a lie against the truth, and brings only confusion and strife.] But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. (Jas 3:14-16 AV) 15. Do people become less bitter with maturity? Why or why not? Bitterness accumulates. Unless there s a solution to it, people do not get less bitter with maturity. They get more bitter over the years. It gets worse and worse. Lesson Two: Resolving Bitterness Please read sections 4 to 6 before answering these questions. Always use your own words, in order to indicate your understanding of what you have read. How we can tell (4) 1. a. How can you tell if you are bitter? Bitterness remembers details b. Why is this an effective indicator? Because memory is helped by review, review, and more review. People do not usually mull over the wonderful things as much. But they do go over and over and over the bad things. I have done quite a bit of counseling with people who are in the process of getting divorced. I have known some since the time they were married, at a happier time in their life. But at the time of the divorce they cannot remember a single happy time. All they can remember is that which they have gone over and over. They are bitter. The solution for bitterness (5) 2. What is the solution for bitterness according to Ephesians 4:31-32? the solution for bitterness is to get rid of it. Freedom from Bitterness Course FFB: Grader Answer Key as of 7/16/2015 3

[Put bitterness away by forgiving the offender!] Note to Graders: the text has not yet specifically addressed forgiveness. The author at this point is only emphasizing that it is possible to unilaterally get rid of the bitterness. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ s sake hath forgiven you. (Eph 4:31-32 AV) Why we don t do it 3. Describe the connection between hurt, resentment, bitterness, hatred, and murder. [hurt resentment bitterness hatred murder] there is a close relationship between being hurt and being resentful. Someone gets hurt and then he gets resentful. There is another very close connection between resentment and bitterness. Resentment turns into a deep bitterness. Bitterness is just resentment that has been held on to. It has become rancid and rotten. It is kept in and it gets worse. The links in the chain continue. There is a connection between bitterness and hatred, and a very clear biblical identification between hatred and murder (Mat 5:21-22). 4. Define bitterness in terms of resentment. Bitterness is just resentment that has been held on to. Overcoming the obstacle 5. a. In order to deal with bitterness, what must we recognize in addition to the fact that we are bitter? What we want to do is make it apparent how sinful bitterness is. The bitter person must first recognize that he is bitter, and secondly, that it is a gross evil. b. Why do people not deal with bitterness? the reason people do not deal with this sin is that they think it is the other person s sin. 6. a. Can you forgive someone when you are bitter? No b. Why? because bitterness doesn t forgive. 7. Is it right to wait for the other person to ask forgiveness? Why or why not? [No, because] In order to forgive this person when he says he is sorry, you have to be ready before he says he is sorry. [Note to Graders: this answer is mostly a repeat of the prior answer, but it is the key to the whole issue, so we ask it again in a different way.] And if you are ready to forgive him before he says he is sorry, then it doesn t depend on whether he says he is sorry or not. In other words, you get rid of bitterness unilaterally. It does not matter what the other person does. 8. When someone has deeply hurt you, and you have become bitter, who is responsible for the bitterness you feel? Why? In reality bitterness is a sin that stands alone. The bitter person decides to be bitter independently of the offender. Confession before God 9. What is the only thing that can get rid of your bitterness? The only thing that gets rid of it is confession before God because of the Lord Jesus Christ s death and resurrection. Sweet water 10. Describe the lesson of the sweet water analogy as it pertains to bitterness. [What comes out of us is what is inside, no matter the severity of the hardship.] Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also (Mat 23:26 AV). A cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill even one drop of bitter water, however suddenly jolted. If it is full of sweet water and is jolted, what will come out of the cup? Sweet water. If you gave it a harder jolt, what s going to happen? More sweet water. If someone is filled with sweet water and someone else gives him a jolt, what will come out? Sweet water. Jolts do not turn sweet water into bitter water. That is done by something else. Jolts only bring out of the container what s already in the container. If you re filled with sweetness and light, and you get jolted, you re going to spill sweetness and light. If you re filled with honey, the honey will come out. If vinegar comes out, what does that prove? It shows what was already in the container. In other words, much bitterness is not based upon what the other person did at all. It is the result of what we do and are. Freedom from Bitterness Course FFB: Grader Answer Key as of 7/16/2015 4

11. What is the nature of bitterness? if I had not taken care of the bitterness, I would know to this day exactly what she had said [i.e., the sin of the other]. That is the nature of bitterness. Summary (6) 12. How does a person get rid of bitterness? In order to get rid of bitterness, I have to see that it is evil, and that it is my sin and my sin only I do not get rid of it any other way except calling it sin against the holy God, confessing it, and receiving forgiveness. 13. What is the difficulty in doing this? The difficulty is in getting my eyes off the other person s sin. 14. a. If someone had hurt you, and you were filled with sweetness, what would be your response to the hurt? The difficulty is in getting my eyes off the other person s sin. But just the fact that I think it is his problem shows that it is not. If it were his problem, and I was filled with sweetness and light, and not bitter, then I would be concerned about the other person. I could say, That poor guy! Look what he did. If I did something like that, I would feel awful. He must really feel awful. I think I will go help him. But if that is not my response, then I am bitter and it is my sin, not his. b. If this is not your response, what does it indicate? But if that is not my response, then I am bitter and it is my sin, not his. 15. Making It Personal a. Are you bitter? (Review your answer to 10b.) b. What will you do about your bitterness? 16. Making It Personal a. What are the main lessons you have learned during this course? b. How valuable has this course been to you? 2603 W. Wright Street Pensacola, FL USA school@mountzion.org Freedom from Bitterness Course FFB: Grader Answer Key as of 7/16/2015 5
