Morality and Business (SP14) Introductory course similar to the above but focusing more particularly upon the ethical dimensions of business and case studies arising in various concrete situations of business. Existential Philosophy (SU13) Introductory course exposing students to existentialist themes and ideas, with particular focus on the writings of Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, and Nietzsche. Greek Ethics (SP09) Intermediate course providing a rich survey of Greek writings upon ethics, from Socrates to the Stoics (including the non-philosophers Hesiod and Thucydides). Seminar in Philosophy: Environmental Philosophy (SP12) Intermediate course exploring three central ideas of environmental philosophy: animals, wilderness, and ecology.
4 Teaching Experience, Continued Political Philosophy: Liberty & Revolution (SP13, FA13, SP14) Intermediate-to-advanced course focused upon understanding the one of the main concepts of modern political philosophy, liberty, and the associated feature of modern political life, revolution. Note: In FA13 and SP14 this course is paired with a speaker series bringing noted scholars to Chapel Hill to teach a class and deliver a lecture to the University community. Seminar for Majors: Moral Psychology (FA10) Advanced seminar focused upon the work of Elizabeth Anscombe and some contemporary authors (Donald Davidson, Philippa Foot, Warren Quinn, and Candace Vogler) influenced by or responding to her work on moral psychology and action theory. Special Topics in Philosophy: Freedom and the Good (SP10) Advanced seminar focused upon the tension in modern political philosophy between the political ideal of freedom and the moral ideal of virtue, examining both some of the texts where this tension arises most starkly and several attempted reconciliations between the two ideals. Independent Directed Study: Metaethics (FA11) Directed reading of texts by Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, and Christine Korsgaard. Independent Directed Study: Religious Epistemology (SP12) Directed reading of recent work on the epistemology of religious experience and religious belief by William P. Alston and Alvin Plantinga. Independent Directed Study: Kierkegaard (FA12) Directed reading of The Sickness Unto Death and Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing. PPL Research Seminar (SP10, SP11, SP12) Thesis-writing seminar in which students progressively drafted their own Fourth Year Research Projects and commented upon those being written by others. PPE Reading Group: Adam Smith s Wealth of Nations (SP13) Weekly reading group organized by the PPE program, devoted to reading and discussing some of the most significant ideas and arguments of Adam Smith s Wealth of Nations.
