1 SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT-I, 2018 CLASS-IX (ENGLISH) TIME-3HRS MM-70 MARKS Instructions this question paper is divided into three sections Section A- Reading Section B - Writing and Grammar Section C literature and long reading text (20 marks) (25 marks) (25 marks) NOTE: all sections are compulsory. Write your answer in your answer sheet. Section A- Reading Q1. Read the following passage and answer the following questions. Antarctica, the fifth largest continent on the earth, is the most unique of all the continents. Not only it is the coldest, windless, highest and driest of all the continents, but also the only one that has no native inhabitants. The harsh climatic conditions of the continent are covered with ice and it only rains up to two inches per year. If you reach the heart of the continent, you would realize what it is like to be frozen dead since the temperature here goes down to minus 128 degrees in winter. In summer, however, one can witness some activity in Antarctica, when several scientists come to reside research here. They study various issues such as the effect of the ozone hole on the natural life of Antarctica and the threat that it faces from global warming.
2 So with such harsh conditions, what would let a group of people go and venture in Antarctica? It has to be man who dare to be different, who do what other do not or never have done. One such men was Ernest Shackleton. He was always known to put his men first before anything else. He enthused a spirit of confidence and loyalty in them. His uniqueness is well exhibited in a recruitment notice that he wrote and got published in newspaper. He reads Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honour and recognitions in case of success. Obviously, after reading such an advertisement, who would even think of responding but that wasn t the case! Twenty-seven men signed on! Their ship crashed and they were stuck on the continent for all one year before rescue came to them. Shackleton made his objectives for making a trans-antarctic expedition in 1914 very clear when he said, From the sentimental point of view, it is the last great polar journey that can be made. it will be a grater journey that the journey to the pole and back, and I feel it is up to the British nation to accomplish this, for we have been beaten at the conquest of the north pole and beaten at the conquest of the south pole. There now remains the largest and most striking of all journeys- the crossing of the continent. Answer the following questions:[8 marks] (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) How does the writer describe Antarctica? Scientists are worried by this population explosion, as they call it. In fact, many of them say that it is a greater danger to the future of the world than war. There is already terrible hunger in many parts of the world. In Asia, Africa and America, and even in some parts of the world, millions of people do not get enough to eat. In spite of the extraordinary progress made by medical science, these poor and hungry people often die-just because they are too weak to fight illness. 2. Those who always believe that the worst will happen say that there is no hope for us. They claim-quite rightly at the moment-that the world s population is growing much faster than food production. By the end of the century, they say, it will be quite impossible to feed six thousand million mouths. 3. But not all scientists think this. Those that have studied the problem say that the world could produce enough food to feed everybody. In fact, they claim that with careful and scientific management, the world could even now produce four times as much food as it is producing. They claim, too, that food production could increase more quickly than the population. They point to the great progress that has already been made. They say that scientists and engineers working together have proved that the poorest land
4 can be made to grow food. Look at the deserts in Africa, Asia and America that have been turned into flowering gardens! they say. All we ask for is more money and better education-money to provide the machinery and tools and chemicals, and education to teach the inexperienced farmers hoe to use them. 4. So far we have spoken only about the land. But there is also the sea. You have probably all at some time or other had fish for dinner. If you have visited England you will even have had it for breakfast. If you live near the coast you will have seen long lines of fishing boats sailing out to sea. Many of you have probably fished yourselves. Fish is one of man s commonest foods. And today fish can be eaten by people who live thousands of miles away from the sea. For thanks to tins and to the refrigerators which can keep food cold, fish can be kept fresh for weeks, months or even years. [12 marks] Answer the following question: (a) What do many of the scientists think about population explosion? (b) Why do the poor and hungry often die despite the progress made by the medical science? (c) What do the optimistic scientists ask for to produce more food?
