Emperor Julian Parzival & Herzeleide Tycho Brahe* Rudolf Steiner knew that it was his mission to bring the new, Christian ideas of reincarnation and karma to the world. In 1910, in a series of lectures on reincarnation and karma titled Occult History, he describes the reincarnating individuality of Julian the Apostate in the fourth century, Herzeleide in the ninth century and Tycho Brahe in the seventeenth century. However, after Rudolf Steiner saw that his audience in 1910 was not ready to receive this information, he stopped speaking about it. After the Christmas conference in 1924 he returned to this theme with new intention and spoke tirelessly about reincarnation and karma, illustrating his insights with many examples of named individuals, including the same individuality he had mentioned in Why would we concern ourselves with these past centuries and the lives of a Roman emperor, a woman out of an epic poem, and an astronomer? This can only be answered by looking into it. Says Jannebeth Roell, After I began looking into these lives, figures popped out of the history book as living people. Each life had a distinct intention carried over from one life into another. The individuality of these lives was gaining strength and vision with each life and he carried an intention towards the future. What is this future? It is the developing human being who is the future history of Christianity. It is you and me and we have a part in it. Says Linda Connell, I had never heard of anyone working with the Saturn, Sun and Moon exercise until I had an opportunity to practice it with a group in Switzerland. Someone presented a talk on the life of Champollion, who translated the Egyptian Rosetta Stone. When the group examined his life from the perspective of Saturn, Sun and Moon it became clear that there was something in his life intentions connected with revealing the wisdom of ancient Egypt. Now I am happy to practice this exercise with friends whenever I have the opportunity, because by practicing we can gain greater capacities for grasping karma. Says MariJo, Rudolf Steiner's descriptions of cosmic evolution gave real meaning and new purpose to reincarnation for me. That with exercises we could develop new eyes to begin to see the unfolding gesture of an individual's commitment through lifetimes that is astonishing and humbling. Presenting Transformative Arts And Cheri Munske Color is the soul of nature and the whole Cosmos, and by experiencing the life of color, we participate in this soul. ~Rudolf Steiner Since 2009 I have had a private practice in Transformative Arts, which has been deeply informed by anthroposophy. The Tobias School of Art and Therapy, where I did my training, is founded upon the work of

2 Volume 105, April 2013 Newsletter of the Portland Branch of the Anthroposophical Society 2 or magical powers, and returns transformed to his home, bringing gifts and new insights to his fellow man. An archetype for the path of individuation is beautifully told in the story of Parzival. Dr. Margarethe Hauschka, a student of both Rudolf Steiner and Ita Wegman. For Dr. Hauschka therapeutic painting was more about the process itself, the artistic experience, and the accompanying realizations of the client, which was important, not the finished piece. After WWII, Margarethe and her husband, an anthroposophical doctor, founded the first training center for the healing arts of its kind, including the visual arts as well as rhythmic massage, in Stuttgart, Germany. She is considered to be the Mother of Therapeutic Arts, and is well known to have said, It is important that the painting can breathe and Transitions are everything. Transformative Arts is a process which provides a medium of expression using color, form and movement to strengthen and support our inherent forces of health. Through my work, whether in my personal art or in guiding another through an artistic journey, I strive to cultivate the middle realm, the Heart sphere, where the soul can live into a colorful, breathing space. This space of active receptivity allows something to enter, grow, and transform. For this, the world of color is the perfect vehicle, and nature is my teacher. Within the artistic process, especially when combined with an immersion into the natural world, one can bring together the qualities of rhythm, balance and grace. Color, gesture, movement and a sense of wonder are the key elements I strive to bring into my work as an art therapist, puppeteer and educator. For me, the artistic process provides a path which cultivates the imagination and deepens our connections to the very source of creativity and transformative potential. Painting engenders a new experience of the surrounding world, a new connection to the beauty of Nature. ~Margarethe Hauschka Art therapy addresses both physical and psychological challenges, such as stress, depression, insomnia, bereavement, traumas, anxiety, cancer, asthma, learning difficulties. Artistic therapeutic exercises help harmonize what has become one-sided, transforming habits by awakening new faculties of imagination. Subtle processes work on the feelings to restore inner balance, which in turn affects the health of the physical body. Individually tailored exercises in the visual arts build slow and steady steps, which can lead toward renewed health and personal growth. A variety of media are used in order to reach different aspects of our individuality: watercolor painting, pastels, drawing and sculpture. Life challenges can be seen as modern-day manifestations of what Joseph Campbell calls the hero s journey. These hero myths and legends from around the world vary greatly in their detail, but the common framework of the hero s journey involves a central character who ventures forth from his known world, performing tasks or deeds, often with the aid of a mentor This journey is not always taken up consciously; in Celtic myths the protagonist is sometimes unwittingly lured into the forest by following an animal and thus begins the adventure. There are other times when the hero is thrust into a situation by forces outside his control. Often in mythology, however, the hero ventures willingly into the unknown in order to serve a greater good. The traits the hero must possess, those of courage, strength, determination, steadfastness, compassion and love, are the very characteristics we must all discover and embrace in order to face the challenges encountered on our own life s path. It is the task of the modern person to move through his/her own stages of the hero s journey, the separation, the ordeal or learning phase, and the return. To embark upon an artistic therapeutic journey into the Unknown is to enter into a modern day path of the hero s journey. Through the artistic process one encounters glimpses into the depths that lie hidden within. To begin the path of self-discovery is to enter into the metaphoric forest with courage and openness for what lies ahead. Within the artistic process, one can begin a gradual unveiling of the soul, and transform these unknown parts into a new way of seeing the world, a new form of consciousness. This transformation is indeed an awakening, a resurrection, a rebirth. And just as the hero knows within his depths he is being guided by a divine light, the modern seeker along the path of self-discovery is supported and guided when he is able to live with an inner trust in the wonder and beauty to be found in the unseen soul of me, the great Unknown. The reflection, the mirroring quality of the artistic process within a therapeutic setting, can be a guide into the space of the Heart, the place where light and darkness live and join to form a colorful, meaningful world. The artistic process has taught me to the importance of cultivating the capacities of warmth and interest, devotion and compassion for the journey itself. As Parzival had to learn through his long years of questing, the virtues of steadfastness and faithfulness to the task are essential, as is an unwavering trust in the help and guidance of the spiritual world. As I strive ever to nurture these qualities within, I am able to live with the conviction that it is precisely the trials and challenges one faces in life which can lead to inner growth. It is as if these crisis points in life, the call of unknown, are pictures of the future coming towards us, opening up our potential for transformation. The two segments that are joined together on the outside surfaces of the two smaller circles look like a sprout beginning to unfold above the ground. And the larger circle in the space above the sprout is an ancient image of the cosmic forces of growth, hovering above like the sun in the realm of potential, while we stewards of the land toil away at the endless gardening tasks in spring at the digging, weeding and planting. While many annuals are just beginning the process of flowering, the early spring flowering plants are just now setting fruit, and the fruits which were already fertilized in early spring are beginning to swell up on the branches. Through Klocek s generous sharing of his imaginative genius, the dynamic process of spiritual-growth forces manifesting in nature can be seen through the morphing of each zodiacal glyph into its next progression: Note how the two smaller circles in the Pisces man-in-theglyph have moved closer together now in Aries, and the larger circle is further away. What in Pisces had been a cosmically-mediated contradiction of earthly duality, has now given way to the most significant aspect of Aries--the realm of potential for the earth itself in what emerges from it as an actualized birth of the divine! What a pleasure it is to breathe in the freshness of the spring air, to see green shoots pushing up through the soil and blossoms lining the tree branches. Each turn I take around my garden seems to free up something inside me that was not moving before! Cinderella Returns, by Cheri Munske SOUND GESTURE: The Aries T sound gesture as expressed in Eurythmy, with the fingertips touching the center top of the head, looks like that upward striving shoot. To raise ourselves enough spiritually, to truly appreciate this holy T-sound gesture in nature today, we may have to work through the concepts and ideas of the morphable art forms such as eurythmy and music, painting, textile and clay modeling. For the ancients who were still clairvoyant, and still quite morphable in form, direct communication with the world of spirits was actually breathed in and out, embodied as a resonance, and then expressed in a sound similar to the Chinese TAO. Just as we can connect with some element in a person s soul when we shake their hand, Atlanteans could breathe in, take hold of and grasp the resonance of any form in nature, and feel with (and within) their whole being that they were touching the body of the Godhead. To witness their own form actually change according to what they were experiencing, was the first

4 Volume 105, April 2013 Newsletter of the Portland Branch of the Anthroposophical Society 4 manifestation of the I or Ego pouring into them when the Sun was standing in a certain relationship to the Aries constellation. The T-sound denotes their realization of a capacity flowing into them, as something sacrificed from the Formative Forces of the physical Sun in Aries. Signs and sound gestures that had meaning for ancient clairvoyant consciousness have been handed down without being fully understood. Today, we might feel something through the touch of a leaf as though it were the garment of the Divine, or experience a flash of lightning as a display of the Godhead, but we are not so easily swayed or changed in mind and body. What generally concerns us more today than the divinity within nature, is what our senses perceive externally. We have acquired the gift of exact senseobservation, but we more often see only the physical body-- not its resonant soul. And so we have lost clairvoyant knowledge of the world and of our own self as the body incarnate of the Godhead. And yet an intense yearning for spirit does start to grow in us, in consequence, as it does for all earthly life under the radiance of the great hovering cosmic sphere characterized in the Aries glyph. And in our life struggles to be human, if our striving toward the light has any measure of success, we each in our own way come to realize our destiny in re-uniting with the Godhead, re-establishing a fertile connection, in order to awaken love in our hearts, and in the world, and evolve our differences into higher unity. The spring of Aries is a time for this resonance, and it s remembrance, to fill us. BODY PARTS: The body part of Aries is the head, and the forces of concentration the head expresses that facilitate consciousness arising. We can see this condensing process of Aries again and again in our evolution. Like the upright striving shoot in spring, the first thing that makes us consciously human is our uprightness, both in stature, and in the spiritual capacity which evolves within our I body, hovering about us as potential that we strive to actualize within ourselves. Today our etheric and physical bodies are about the same in size and form, remaining corpse-like in bed as we sleep, while our dynamic astral body and Ego leave for our nightly activity in the spiritual dimension until we awake. But clairvoyant masters agree that cosmic conditions were different in ancient pre-lemurian times, when the sun, moon and earth were still all united in the vast radiant body of Old Sun. Just as the face of today s clock reflects the passage of 24 hours, that great cosmic sphere revolved twice around the twelve zodiacal signs, once during night and once during day, except that each night, and day lasted more on the order of six months. During the incubating warmth and darkness of the ancient Old Saturn period that preceded this epoch (not the residual planet Saturn we know today, but a much more expansive and inclusive spiritual realm that preceded its Old Sun condensation), the Egoseed had already taken root in a kind of trance consciousness-state, waiting to be birthed. The zodiacal-soul forces first descended, from out of this womb of God to an embryonic earth, as grotesque human-animal forms with unconscious animal urges and blind cravings for the physical. Their etheric body, as Pre-Lemurian beings, projected beyond their physical body on all sides, especially their head. And when their astral body withdrew at night, that chaos of wild urges and cravings still remained connected with their etheric body and head so that they kept a greater spiritual consciousness around and in them through those long night-day cosmic periods. As those zodiacal-soul forces gradually descended from spirit through the eons of time it took for the sun, moon and earth to separate, their humangeneric soul counterparts reflected them on earth in constantly changing animal forms. The substance of the ancient Pisces-man has been described as soft and pliable with a skeletal structure that was closer to cartilage, which is organized but not yet hardened into bone, like a jellyfish hardly distinguishable from the watery-air surrounding it, and changing shape reactively to stimuli. These shape-shifting capabilities continued through the Lemurian and Atlantean epochs, taking countless passes through the zodiac to reach a stage that finally began to resemble the present human form. By the Old Lemurian time, when the first Christpreparatory event took place, that quieted and harmonized our senses into unified selfless service to our being, humans could successfully orient and move upon the earth with physical, etheric and astral bodies intact, but not yet with the freedom to think for themselves and know what they had to do on earth or to develop a humanly upright posture as we do today. In the first Atlantean epoch, the second soul sacrifice of Christ empowered humans to overcome animal appetites and greed brought on not by the selfishness of the now subservient senses, but of our vital organs themselves. The unified servitude of our organs to our bodies allowed us to function in relative health, protecting us from debilitating illness brought on by each or any organ seeking it s own devices. In the last part of the Atlantean period, the third sacrifice of Christ allowed this unifying, condensing process to penetrate still deeper into our soul forces, bringing thinking, feeling and willing together as unselfish subordinate members of a united soul. As the otherwise wild and dissociative passions became more deeply attuned with man s increasing self-consciousness, his etheric body further condensed into his physical head, and furthered the possibility for will impulses to harmonize with thoughts and feelings within a more constant physical form, essentially the same as we have today. But it was not until the fourth sacrificial event, the Mystery of Golgotha, that the incarnation of Christ into the body of man ignited the living process of the ego arising within us. To achieve this, the elemental forces of the cosmos, the etheric and astral forces arising from wind, air or water--which would have otherwise threatened the ego with chaotic disorder had to be unified within the ego in relative harmony. Christ achieved this through the sacrificial gift of placing his own ego in the service of human beings, and from then on calling upon us to likewise unselfishly submit ourselves in turn, for consciousness to be able to flood our ego without destroying us. It was in the body structure of this new human being, under the condensing head forces of Aries, that man could carry sufficient power in trunk and limbs for his upright striving to blossom forth with self-conscious thinking processes in the realm of his potential. Like the daily rising of our present Sun, and like

5 Volume 105, April 2013 Newsletter of the Portland Branch of the Anthroposophical Society 5 the rising before it, of the Old Moon, Old Sun, and Old Saturn, Steiner describes the head as coming into existence first as a large sphere, before the awakening of our birth. Our karma is woven by countless beings of the Spiritual Hierarchies into this sprouting seed with an inheritance of all the Saturn-Sun-Moon consciousness-periods. What becomes our head is a Wisdom, which has embodied in it all our experiences of past incarnations through all the zodiacal forces. With conception, the spiritual head becomes smaller and more concentrated as it moves closer toward incarnation, finally uniting itself with its mother as a small cosmic sphere attached to the whole body. When you compare the spiritual realities with the physical ones, the earth with all its forces could not have been able to produce our head. What is actually earth-man is only what has grown out of the head and spine. We recapitulate a spiritualevolutionary process now in our infancy when we emerge from a helpless, wriggling, crawling state and pull ourselves upright, like upward-striving shoots in spring. Everything has to reach a certain state of maturity before we can develop from the generic into a specific individual, but with recurring morphological expression we are spiritually organized to walk and talk and think long before our Ego-consciousness has fully awakened. The godhead simply shines down upon us like an eternal spring, waiting for our potential to grow into its image. Within the head itself, for example, the zygomas (cheekbones) and fused mandible of our upper and lower jaws arise like arms and legs from our skull, as metabolic processes hardening into form. Our higher development continues at a soul level, through recognizing in ourselves the various animal impulse-forms as parts of our own body, subsuming them through soul sacrifice and developing them to higher levels of integration. The four sacrifices of Christ are spiritual powers that continue to evolve within us as we struggle to find and maintain the right balance in all contexts and aspects of life. As our consciousness has been slowly evolving through many Aries springs over many millions of years, we now have greater access to the I consciousness that continues to spherically hover above us in the realm of our spiritual potential toward the Christ Consciousness. It streams into our head and we work it through our whole body as our Ego-organization. In Christian terms, the twelve apostles represent the twelve stages of consciousness through which we must pass. To date, we have only ascended through a trance consciousness in the Old Saturn stage, which we carry within our physical body; a deep sleep consciousness during our Old Sun existence, which relates to our etheric body; the dream consciousness of the Old Moon period, characteristic of our astral body; and the clear day/waking consciousness present now as our Egoorganization. Through our sentient soul-spirit work we develop our intellectual/mind soul. Then through an unconscious process of transformation within our physical body, the I /Ego organization lights up our developing chakra centers as sense organs in our spiritualconsciousness soul life. In the soft watery tissues between the left and right cerebral hemispheres, Wisdom sprouts up from the quiet surface activity of pure thought, which develops not so much from intellect as through the unifying attunement of meditation and prayer. Mostly, we are still at the consciousness-soul stage, and we will have become higher beings when by means of the Ego we are able, collectively, to consciously-willfully control all our organs, so that like a hive of bees, we all share a common soul and carry out a common work. Considering the all too often yet unbridled raging animal-souls of men and the polar nature of our life together, I can only distantly imagine us as exalted beings who have learned to integrate all twelve stages of consciousness into a new and higher unity of being. Steiner describes that higher thirteenth stage of consciousness as the one in which a new Christianity can evolve through mankind in the coming epoch of Aquarius. This makes me think of the Ophiuchus constellation described in the previous article on Pisces, now stepping into the zodiac, possibly as the thirteenth sign. CULTURAL EPOCH: The vernal sun stood in the Aries sign of the Ram or Lamb during the fourth post-atlantean Greco-Roman cultural epoch. Being subject to the upward striving Aries spiritual forces makes it possible for the head to develop in a way that the Ego-consciousness can unfold, along with the soul faculty for self-contemplation. This came to unprecedented expression in every realm of Greek culture, with no previous age ever having seen man living so broadly in the physical world as such a purely human self-contained ego-being, with a conscious awareness that the world of the senses is united with the world of the spirit. The Aries Lamb lying at the foot of the Cross, and the Lamb of God in the Greek Legend of the Golden Fleece, are depictions in this early period of Christianity which foreshadow both the coming of Christ and that of the human being endowed with ego, as the fifth living being to unite the four shifting forms of the lower human-generic being (water-man, lion, ox and eagle). From their own inner life and through the clarity of their thoughts, the Greeks found everything through Nature. In man s life struggles, his upward striving, his tragic end, Greek mythologies represent Man as carrying out the image of the Gods, not yet as gods incarnate. Apollo, for example is one such god among the high Sun-Spirits who radiates downward, united with humanity like that great hovering cosmic sphere of the Aries glyph, containing the earth within itself, while calling for its potential to be birthed within the earth itself, in a new conscious and freed being. The Greeks knew the divine world had to disappear from human consciousness so that it could penetrate within a newer, higher form as the Christimpulse. That is foretold by the Son-of-Apollo descending into physical existence, but only as far as the human soul faculties then existing could receive him. The ancient Greeks were like shoots striving upward to bask in the consciousness of the sun, like angels reflecting the spirit of God. Their art, reflecting their experiences with the ancient gods above them, depicted the earthly evolution of their moral life only as far as their gods were connected with it. As the earth separated and densified by the end of the fourth post-atlantean epoch, vision of the Old Sun-Spiritual Beings became an increasing rarity as they gradually faded from human consciousness.

6 Volume 105, April 2013 Newsletter of the Portland Branch of the Anthroposophical Society 6 WORLD VIEW: The Aries worldview, Idealism, holds that life in the material world has no real meaning unless ideas and ideals can emerge that engage the soul and give it purpose. In the Goethean sense, ideas and ideals are just as objective as the colors and the forms of things, even as they are not there for those whose spirit is unreceptive to them. They are only there for those who are open to them, who can see their worth and apply them. One of the highest expressions of ideals comes to us through the arts. At a recent museum exhibit of Greek art and sculpture here in Portland, we saw how the Greeks observed themselves through a self-knowledge idealized in sculptured forms of godly forces, working on behalf of their evolution. They reflected the gods as ideals, as a realm of ego-potential not yet embodied, not yet differentiated in separation from the gods. As in the battling city-states of Athens and Sparta, the Greeks held ideals of democracy, of human beings preserving their purity of spirit, their softness and pliability, contested against militarist ideals that brought a hardening impenetrability of the soul. But on both sides, like caricatures in a play, the whole of the developing human personality was poured into idealized forms toward a single evolving archetype that was revered in its not yet. In Greek works of art, the divine Plato, (~427 B.C.) philosopher of idealism, even declared the plastic and dramatic arts to be harmful in the potential unruly freedoms they could unleash, sparing only music, because of its promotion of courage in war. The essence of Art, how it can reach out beyond Nature in a spiritual way to create something greater was still much beyond Plato s grasp--like the Christ-Impulse, yet to be embodied. We are increasingly rising into a spiritual understanding of the world today through artistic endeavors, but as the Greeks gradually came under the influence of other cultures, their experiences appeared only on the physical plane as idealized forms sculpted into hard marble. The Romans, who were becoming ever more bound to a material existence, went even further than the Greeks in molding their whole social life, not from their spiritual essence but more in accordance with their intellectual/mind soul.
