1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Fraud is a deliberate act or omission that is deliberately committed to deceiving, deceive or otherwise manipulate others. Fraud can result in other parties suffering losses and fraud perpetrators gain profit directly or indirectly. Fraud causes people to be greedy and wants to hoard excessive wealth in order to regard as the greatest and the richest. Fraud is still common in the selection of candidates for regional heads in Indonesia. The candidates of the head of the region are willing to do various cheating things to get the position they want. The thing that they often do is with money politics. Usually, they distribute some money to citizens who have the right to vote so that citizens choose them. The phenomenon of fraud for fame not only happen in term of life but also in the novel The Black Tulip written by Alexandre Dumas. The writer concern in the novel The Black Tulip that show how people get what they want by the fraud. From the novel, we can see that the novel tell about against fraud for fame. Alexandre Dumas was a French writer best known for his historical novels of high adventure. Alexandre Dumas was born on July 24, 1802, in Villers-Cotterêts, France. His parent's name is Marie Louise Labouret and General Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie. He wrote many novels, plays and magazine articles. Alexandre Dumas's novel titles include The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Last Cavalier, The Black Tulip etc. One of the famous novels by Alexandre Dumas is The Black Tulip novel. The Black Tulip story tells about two brothers named Cornelius de Witt and John de Witt that accused of rebellion to the Prince William of Orange. They put into prison and get the death penalty. Then they escape from the 1
2 2 prison but they captured by the citizens. They stripped naked and beaten to death. Cornelius de Witt has a Godson named Cornelius van Baerle, a tulip farmer who spends his life to planting and developing tulips. He has a neighbor that named Isaac Boxtel. Isaac Boxtel also a tulip farmers but he not great than Cornelius van Baerle in growing tulips. Because of this, he very envied with Cornelius van Baerle. He always stalks the Cornelius van Baerle garden to know what Cornelius did to grow the tulips. One day he saw Cornelius van Baerle getting a package from his godfather, Cornelius de Witt. The package contains a document and a letter for Cornelius van Baerle. In the letter says that Cornelius van Baerle does not open and read the document. He must immediately burn it. Isaac Boxtel reported him and then he arrested and taken to a jail. In a jail Cornelius van Baerle always thinking how to grow his tulips. Then he met Rosa, a jail keeper child named Gryphus. They were falling in love. Cornelius van Baerle teaches Rosa to read, writing, and how growing the tulip. Cornelius has a three bulb of tulips. The first tulip destroyed by Gryphus. The second tulip grows perfectly but the tulip stolen by Isaac Boxtel. Isaac Boxtel brings the tulips to Haarlem to get the promised gift that is one hundred thousand guilders. Rosa who realizes that his tulips have been lost for stolen then went to the jail to tell Cornelius van Baerle. Then Rosa went to Haarlem to know who has stolen his tulips. She told to Prince Wiliam of Orange that his tulip had been stole. After Rosa see the tulip that brought by Isaac Boxtel he was convinced that it was his tulips. It is time for delivery of the gift that Prince Wiliam of Orange has promised. In this event, Rosa fainted and she helped by Prince Wiliam. On the other hand, Cornelius van Baerle taken into a place to accept his punishment. He saw the crowd giving the gift of the black tulip. He wants to know the black tulip to ensure whether the tulip is as perfect as his tulips that lost. He saw Rosa and ask Rosa whether the tulips belong to them. Prince Wiliam announced that the tulips belonged to Rosa. Isaac Boxtel was
3 3 surprised and he fainted. Then he checked by an officer but Isaac Boxtel was death. The gift given to Rosa and Cornelius. At the same time, Cornelius released because it has been prove not guilty. Many comments on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. The comments are positive and some are negative. One of the positive comments is from Book Addict account. The Book Addict account says that the book is surprisingly fast and gripping. The characters fully formed with insight into their motivations and actions revealed at just the right time. A beautifully told story with many memorable phrases. A must for your bookshelf to read again. Guy Bernard also gave positive comments on this Dumas work. He said that there is a wonderful story, well told and a delight to receive. Then he said that I certainly must thank Mr. Dumas, were that he be here to receive his due, and to the someone certainly more literate than I an appreciation of your efforts for making this classic available that I might complete my educational endeavor. There is also a negative comment for this novel. One of them is from Nemo. Nemo says that "The Black Tulip" is not Dumas' strongest work. The plot is not as engaging as his others are. In fact, it is quite predictable; Rosa given the letter, which clears the main character of all wrongdoing, but she cannot read. However, she learns how to read, leading to the obvious conclusion. The characters are also not terribly developed. The only character who seems fully rounded is William of Orange, who is both sinister and sympathetic. For the researcher, The Black Tulip novel by Alexandre Dumas is a very interesting novel to read. This novel provides a romantic story and many moral values that can be taking from the novel story. The researcher interest in analyzing The Black Tulip novel for several reasons. The first is because the story of the novel is interesting. The interesting of The Black Tulip novel shows by the character and characterization, setting of the novel, plot of the novel, style of the novel and the subject time. The second reasons are that the researcher as a student of English Teacher Training Department feels that it is necessary to add insight
4 4 and insert more knowledge to his professional competence as English for Foreign Language teacher. Therefore, the researcher analyze the novel in a research entitle "AGAINST FRAUD FOR FAME REFLECTED IN ALEXANDRE DUMAS'S NOVEL THE BLACK TULIP (1850): A SOCIOLOGICAL APPROACH". B. Problem Statements Based on the title and the background of the study, the researcher expresses the problem, which is How is against fraud for fame in Alexandre Dumas s novel The Black Tulip viewed from a sociology of literature, the problem statement is further disserved into the following research question: 1. What are the indicators of fraud in the novel The Black Tulip? 2. How is fraud for fame depicted in the novel The Black Tulip? 3. Why did the author address fraud in the novel? C. Objective of the Study The objective of the study is as follow: 1. To identify indicators of fraud in the literary work. 2. To describe how the fraud for fame depicted in the literary work. 3. To reveal why Alexandre Dumas addressed fraud related the novel. D. Benefits of the Study The result of this research expected to give some benefits as follows: 1. Theoretical Benefit To give contribution the larger body of knowledge by studying The Black Tulip novel written by Alexandre Dumas. 2. Practical Benefit Practically this research will give influence for me as a researcher and the next researcher. For a researcher this research can enrich my knowledge especially by learning sociology theory. Then, the researcher
5 5 hopes that this research can help the others researcher and gives deeper understanding in literary field as references and previous study to other researchers in analyzing Alexandre Dumas s The Black Tulip novel especially based on sociological approach. E. Paper Organization The researcher organized this research into five chapters and subchapters. First in the chapter one, there is introduction, which consists of background of the study, problem statement, objectives of the study, benefits of the study, and paper organization. Second, in the chapter two there is a literature review, which consists of two subchapters. First, underlying theories, it explains some theory that discusses about sociology of literature, types of sociologi of literature, the definition of fraud, causes of fraud, and the indicators of fraud. Second, review of related studies that explain some previous studies of this research. Third, chapter three there is research method. This chapter consists of five subchapters. The first is type of the study. Second, object of the study. Third, type of data and data source. Fourth, technique of collecting data, and the last but not the least is technique of the data analysis. Fourth, chapter four is finding and discussion. This finding and analysis consist of three subchapters. The first is indicators of fraud. Second, fraud for fame depicted in the novels and the last the reason why the author addressed fraud in these novels. Therefore, in the last is chapter five is conclusion, which gives the result of the research. Moreover, the suggestion is to give the next researcher idea about the issue and topic, and pedagogical implication is the effect of the novel and the research for the large body of knowledge.
