2 Background For long, the world gave much importance to Intelligence Quotient. In mid-1990s, Daniel Goleman revealed findings in neuroscience and psychology that stressed the importance of Emotional Quotient (EQ). During recent times, authors Dana Zohar and Ian Marshall introduced a new dimension to human intelligence - Spiritual Quotient (SQ).

3 Definitions Spiritual Intelligence Danah Zohar and Ian - the ability to find meaning, purpose and values in our life, connecting our actions and lives to a wider, richer, meaning-giving context. Robert Emmons - "the adaptive use of spiritual information to facilitate everyday problem solving and goal attainment. Frances Vaughan - "Spiritual intelligence is concerned with the inner life of mind and spirit and its relationship to being in the world."

4 SQ Indicators (Zohar and Marshall) The capacity to be flexible. A high degree of self-awareness. A capacity to face and use suffering. A capacity to face and transcend pain. The quality of being inspired by vision and values. A reluctance to cause unnecessary harm. A tendency to see the connections between diverse things. A marked tendency to ask Why? or What if? questions and to seek fundamental answers. Being field-independent, that is, possessing a facility for working against convention.

7 Cultivating Spiritual Intelligence Adopting or deepening a contemplative practice, including meditation, centering prayer, journaling, and spending time in nature. Studying with a spiritual teacher, or someone who seems to have a high degree of spiritual intelligence. Reading inspirational literature, spiritual books, and/or inspiring poetry.

8 Cultivating Spiritual Intelligence Contd Becoming involved in a community or fellowship of other spiritual seekers. Setting intentions for our spiritual state of being when we wake up in the morning, and taking inventory of our thoughts, actions, and state of being before we go to sleep at night. Focusing on being of service. An attitude of service is at the core of all the world's spiritual traditions, and it is what provides a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives.
